Hey everybody,
I'm a new member here, been a long time snooper and have finally joined up! Here's my first attempt at getting a discussion going. Basically, as a complete Charmed junkie, I always wondered how the writers would've got themselves out of the mess of Piper's MASSIVE (and unnecessary) power advancement at the end of Season Three, had Prue survived Shax's attack?
Clearly, Piper's exploding power was only written in because Brad and co. had pre-empted/decided that Shannen would be leaving. However, just say Shannen, Brad and Alyssa had somehow worked things out and decided to do another season, how would they suddenly deal with Piper being considerably stronger than Prue?
My only possible theory would be that Piper and Phoebe could've made a deal with Tempus (in person) to help him rewind time (again), but he would require the Power of Three to do it this time (the dude's already done it twice). So, like in Apocalypse Not, Prue and the sisters could 'communicate' via her Astral Projection power and help Tempus do his thing. However, in exchange, Tempus would want immunity from the Power of Three, and protection from the Source, which would deplete the Charmed Ones' powers, and actually make them regress. Thus Phoebe would lose her Levitation, Piper her Combustion and Prue her Astral Projection. Then, Season 4 would be the sisters facing off against the Source, but this time he'd seem like an even bigger threat because they have lost their secondary powers.
Also, it would allow the writers to do the power progressions properly this time.

The sisters could've all had their secondary powers taken away permantely by the Triburnal if they'd been introduced then as punishment for exposing themselves and the fact Phoebe went down to the Underworld helping Cole at the time instead of working with her sisters.
Prue and Piper would be angry at this intially despite the Elders telling them magic has consequences if used incorrectly.
They ask to have them back once times reset and would promise to be more careful with them and not get exposed but the Source takes advantage of that and makes sure the sisters don't get them once Tempus does his thing leaving the sisters with only their original ones allowing Brad Kern to concentrate on their original powers only and advance them how he should've and also made the Source a bigger threat like Deano mentioned before.

Oh, I like that Tribunal idea, melinda. Although, if they are meant to be neutral perhaps diminishing the Charmed Ones' powers would give the Source too much of an upper hand, I don't know. I would have their powers 're-advance' fairly quickly after being taken away. So maybe Prue would get another power mid-Season 4, Piper late Season 4 and Phoebe early Season 5, then the Source battle would be the 100th episode instead.

First of all, welcome Advancing Prue's power comes to mind had she survived. Something like her finally learning how to use power in astral mode.

Her real self could've be concious then also and eventually she might've manipulated energy in the astral plane by summoning ghosts without a spell, move things to another place with herself through astral mode, projected to other dimensions, pulled peoples souls out their bodies and put them back and stopped anyone on the spot with the same powers from going elsewhere making her stronger than Piper then power wise.

Oh wow, some great ideas. I hate how lazy the writing became once Piper got her combustive powers. I can think of so many ways that their powers could've worked collaboratively to vanquish demons. I especially like your idea of Prue 'pulling' a soul temporarily out of a body to disorientate them. Although, one thing, would that work on a demon, as they have no soul? Actually, how can demons even astral project at all if they're soulless?

I agree that a lot of the writing did seem lazy once Piper got her combustion powers. It seemed an almost cheap way of making Piper the most powerful sister, with her taking over the role of eldest and head witch. I think I'd have, like others have said, like to have seen Prue develop her astral projection powers. Learning how to utilise her own power through them, and eventually having full control of the manipulation of the astral plane. For example, using souls, summoning ghosts and eventually I would have like to have seen her astral self being able to move things and people too.
I always thought the powers the sisters possessed fit together perfectly, and it's a shame that we saw less of the collaborative use of them (that I thought was present in the earlier seasons), in the later seasons. To me, a lot of the vanquishes could have been a lot more interesting and pleasing to the eye, had the sisters had to work together, using their varying powers instead of either reading a spell, or managing it on their own. I always found taking in the hollow etc. to be a bit of a short cut.

The introduction of Piper's combustion powers cemented the notion that brute force is ultimate power in the Charmedverse sadly. In earlier seasons, the writers were careful to showcase all the sisters powers equally and how useful they could be in their own specific situations, especially Phoebe's premonition/sensing powers. In fact, I didn't even like the 'oldest is strongest' concept, which is why Piper's exploding power was annoying. It was too aggressive and un-Piper-like. To me, it would've been even more interesting if Paige had come into the sisterhood with the most offensive powers, therefore completely changing the sisterly dynamic. Piper and Phoebe would have put even more pressure on her to learn control over her powers to fight the Source, which would've caused a lot of teething problems in their bond. The 'protector, mediator and baby' roles worked well with the original sisters but this isn't always the case with a set of siblings. You're right, though, their powers did fit well together. Perhaps Piper's powers would've been less unsuited if it had been established that she could only blow up warlocks and lower-level demons, which it wasn't. She was able to blow up a banshee and Tarkin from The Brotherhood within the first two episodes of getting the power. Also, Phoebe barely used any of her powers post-Season 4. Prue's powers would've been so good to see progress, and we could've learned more about what the astral plane actually is. I think her power would've grown until she could basically clone herself.

I always found it 'handy' how she wasn't as strong as Piper. If she'd have had more offensive powers, I think the writers may have done a better job of the sister bonding process. To me, it felt as though they accepted Paige a little too easy. True, having powers forces you together, but I think there should have been a much slower process, one that saw Piper and Phoebe come to terms with the revelation of who Paige was. I know it's TV and you have to be economical, but for me (speaking as a scriptwriter) the relationships must ring true and be consistent no matter what the genre. I also wonder if Prue would be able to ever transport her sisters using the astral plane. The fact astral projection could be learnt in the later seasons took away a little from Prue, so I would have like you said, liked to have learnt more about it, and in order to keep 'the best', I assume Prue would have had to have superior projection powers. It's a shame we'll never find out!

It's a shame we'll never find out! Yeah, I definitely think if Paige had had 'stronger' powers than Piper and Phoebe, they would've struggled to tell her what to do even more than they did. Yes, thank you! The sisterly bonding was far too easy and neatly wrapped up. They should never have been able to vanquish the Source within months of meeting each other. Wasn't the strength of the Power of Three meant to be based on the sisters' bond. Personally, I would've ended Season Four with Cole saying, 'I'm nobody's hero', and the black-flame eyes being the last shot, making the first half Season Five deal with Cole's possession, Phoebe's turning to the dark side (which was also too short) and Cole's eventual vanquish on the 100th episode, with no need for a return. This would've left like 8 more episodes in Season Four free for Piper and Phoebe to get to know Paige properly. Oh wow, it would be interesting to hear what you would've done, as a scriptwriter. I know, Prue would've proven a great witch if she survived given that she had two versatile powers, with which the writers could've gone down a million different paths with.

Exactly my point with Season 4/5. They rushed far too much in the latter seasons. I always hated Cole's return. I didn't see the point in it bar the fact he's immensely good looking haha! Agree with what you said about 'The Source'. They shouldn't have had that much strength so quickly - it almost discredits the relationship between Prue, Piper and Phoebe. You're right, the writers had such an open door with Prue. There was so much room for development. Haha, I'm not too interesting! I'm only just starting to get out there! I mainly write plays, and I've written a lot of short films. Currently writing a commissioned murder mystery play. My uncle is a scriptwriter, and although I'm studying acting, we get writing modules too and through the two of those, I've managed to make a go of it! So if they ever need a writer for a Charmed movie But I would have definitely focussed more on the relationships, and vanquished Cole once not twice, thrice or however many times!Just had a thought - I wonder how Prue would have handled Billie/Christie and the whole Ultimate Power saga?

"Just had a thought - I wonder how Prue would have handled Billie/Christie and the whole Ultimate Power saga?"
I think she would've viewed Christie as an innocent and tried saving her and got Piper and Phoebe had it'd been them still doing that also and not faught both Jenkineses in a big battle if she hadn't changed personality wise over the years.
Prue would've tried convincing the 2 sisters that the Triad were evil and got them to help her, Piper and Phoebe vanquish them especially since Christie knew them really well including their weaknesses to.
With regards to Billie she'd have helped her power wise having the same first one before the latter witches 'Projection' and been a good teacher also giving her tips etc showing her what she could with 'Telekinesis' so on.

I agree. I think Prue would've been more along the lines of Paige's thinking. That the Jenkins sisters needed saving, especially because Prue thought she could save anyone. Piper, especially, was much too quick to accept that Billie needed vanquishing.

Many things would have been different for sure. Maybe she'd have also recognized Chris as a part of their family from the start, yet we cannot tell what could have been. *sighs* Still, a lot of things would have played out differently with her around.

I'd have liked Chris to be Prue' son, if she had still been around in Season Six. He was very Prue-like and it would've been a more interesting family dynamic if Prue's son had come back to save/stop Piper's son.

I wish Prue had lived she was so elegant smart and she had everything I would want in life. A great career, money. Also she had a really cool power. I tell you I would trade my brothers and sisters in a second for her life style. I love my parents to be honest even dad cause he means well he is just getting old that's all but if someone said you can have your book published and made into a movie however the deal is that you can never see your brothers and sisters again I would snap it up in a second no questions! I want to make a movie like Lucy and be successful like Madonna. I also think Shannon is a much better actor than Rose in a heartbeat. Rose is good but she can be good and ok. I found Rose fab in Jawbreaker but not much in Charmed. She was kind of boring however she did have a good power that was cool. I would of also liked to see how Prue would of gotten more powerful and what powers she would of developed and how that would of changed Charmed. I think the show would of been better. It was good that Rose did come in so the show could continue and she did ok with the situation she was in just my opinion.

If Prue had lived, then charmed should close up shop for good after season 4, or 5. But no more than 5 with the original power of three, or it would still turn bad under Kern's writing with Prue around.

The decline of the later seasons had less to do with Prue not being there and more to do with Kern and the WB. Their poor decision-making and bad writing is what drove the show into the ground.

Very true that. I blame the WB just as much as I blame bad writing. Its why Charmed ended for me after season 4, since it felt like a natural end with the source dead. I felt season 4 was rushed because they were unclear it could go on without Prue. Season 4 should of been all about Paige and the source, then season 5 cole/source and the seer.
