The Source used the Hollow and other demons to get the Sisters's powers, but Zankou used their own potions against them to get their powers and the Book of Shadows. So is Zankou smarter than The Source?

Yes, Zankou is smarter than the Source. Zankou planned his attacks, he took his time. He gathered intelligence about the sisters.
Old whiny half face just blundered in and got his a** handed to him.

Zankou was definitely smarter than the Source for the reasons already stated.

All you need to do is consider the fact that Whiny Half-Face dismissed Phoebe's powers as useless and ended up getting handily beaten, while Zankou saw value in her powers and nearly defeated the sisters because of it. Zankou was a real Big Bad.

And yet he relied on a Seer. Even Rex and Hannah could have run circles around this clown.

The Source was pretty intelligent though, he sent demons and warlocks after the sisters for years before he made his final moves of having Prue killed, Phoebe trapped in the underworld and then stealing their powers. Granted his end game sucked, he completely underestimated Phoebe and assumed Paige was too new to make a difference. He got careless and impatient in the end. Its a real shame because throughout the first few seasons he was made out to be a big bad-a$$ who could wipe them out with a thought. Fast-forward to the Kern years and we get the half-faced sore loser "almost anti-climactic, don't you think?" Yes Source, VERY anti-climactic after all that build-up.

Why on earth would the Source need the Halliwells' magic in the first place? The sisters were supposed to be the most powerful witches, not the most powerful magical beings. They weren't capable of vanquishing the Source with a Power of Three spell. They needed extra power and got it by summoning the spirits of the dead witches from their family line.
I don't know much about Zankou. He was supposed to be this old, powerful demon. Yet, he needed the Halliwells' powers? Really?

Zankou was intuitive and resourceful. He chose to gain a thorough understanding of the enemy - not just as witches who battle against the supernatural, but as women with humanly desires and weaknesses. He twisted and manipulated every facet of their lives so that it would make them vulnerable enough for him to kill. It's the same strategy which Cole used to drive a wedge between the sisters, and it almost worked too. Had it not been for his love for Phoebe, the sisters would be dead.
The Source may have been more powerful overall, but I can see why Zankou posed a significant threat to him.

I'd guess that the Source mainly used his lackeys for the work but they were all killed by the Charmed Ones and his ambition got the best of him. Hence, his end. Zankou, on the other hand, studied his enemies and learned from them. No wonder, he was banned! And he learned well. Hence, the end of S7.

B/c everything that the Source knew about them over the years as witches and even his own powers in the end still wasn't strong enough to beat them which led him to unleash the Hollow. The Charmed Ones were not only facing the Source but also had deal with the Hollow.
