It's a funny one as generally speaking you could binge season 1-3 and I generally at LEAST like every episode and adore the best episodes!
Season 1 whenever I rewatch it has such a gothic tone to it similar to the first two Buffy seasons ...that I relish in its that buzz I get when I start to rewatch again going OOOOH it's magical how it's all starting up again ✨
And actually it's crazy how many instant classics season 1 like Buffy it kinda had to hit it from the off ...the debut episode was instantly a hit Dead Man Dating though I think was the first whstbi dare say CLASSIC of the show ....paranormal stuff gets me a buzz and 8 year old me at the time so many bits went over my head naturally but I loved it so much like the demon fighting was always amazing but the emotions here everytime hits me ....and it kinda never fully let up ....the fates of Clay episode maybe ? And the Cupid episode of season 2 and that P3 debut episode kinda get me "meh" vibe but the rest generally I love
Season 1 I think edges it though just for cohesive tonebthroughout the first season had to hit it right and it genuinely did so that season 2 could play about with tones and directions a fair bit
When I think of first seasons most have to hit it hard or take a while to find their footing but here it nailed it I feel plus the demons were genuinely at their most freakishly disturbing I feel in the first season in a way sadly the show didn't explore as much often

S1. The S2 love triangle brings down S2 for me. This I feel it's whstbput me off Piper a fair bit too and every rewatch too I'm like what was the point in that ?! I always watched for the supernatural element anyway so the Piper stuff with the love triangle really was my least favourite part actually especially as all the Dan stuff felt wooden anyway! Plus it meant Leo felt more shoved at us when season 1 they didn't really need their White lighter as heavily ! Then it began to get into the LEO LEOOOO LEEEEO stuff

I don't see the point on it, I get the sense it was a The WB mandate which was pretty common for their shows to do a love triangle story-line. But I do remember hearing that like Leo in S1, Dan was introduced to be a potential love interest for one of the sisters. It's so funny how both Leo and Dan were originally had a possibility of being with Phoebe but it ended up being Piper's story. I think that was mentioned on the podcast. Piper really seems like a totally different person in S2, after S1. I don't know why, she's just so different. I could've done without the whitelighter stuff. It felt like once Leo entered the picture it dumbed the sisters down, when they now relied so much on Leo for information and then orbing became a magical taxi driver thing. I think it came down to laziness, an easy deus ex machina solution for stories and or giving lots of exposition to Leo's character to explain things rather than one the leads like in S1. I'm sure Shannen, Holly and Alyssa preferred Brian getting all those big chunks of dialogue to read out to explain stuff rather than them.

I also like the way it is shot and the instrumental music they use here. It seems like they made changes as early as S2. S2 loses the gothic tone, the lighting is all bright, and the instrumental music has changed. So many classics like you said like Buffy with Charmed. Charmed was so appealing to me at the time, and I got into the show because I loved all the concepts of the supernatural, demons, magic and female empowerment. It reminded me of what I loved about Buffy.
I really do think S1 edges out S2, because I just like the tone of S1, Andy, Quake, the gothic feel, the demons and warlocks. S2 has some stand-outs, but I feel I like it in S1 more with the demons and warlocks.
S2 also has no major arc apart from the love triangle. Rex/Hannah and Inspector Rodriguez were somewhat considered an arc and big bads (even if they were working for others).
This I feel it's whstbput me off Piper a fair bit too and every rewatch too I'm like what was the point in that ?! I'm sure Shannen, Holly and Alyssa preferred Brian getting all those big chunks of dialogue to read out to explain stuff rather than them. Yeah It was said on the podcast it was Shannen who said give Brian all the exposition to do. So I can see why Leo's character was basically the Giles or Bobby from Buffy or Supernatural who basically told the heroes what they needed to know. Yeah orbing really took the thrill out of dangerous situations and was so overused.
Another thing that makes S1 stand-out.
I wish they did let Phoebe get paired with Dan and just kept Leo MIA in S2, so Piper's main arc is opening up P3. P3 really got off the ground so quickly (like she got a business up and running in less than two months. I don't know the ins and outs of nightclubs. But it should take at least 5 to 8 months to even open it up from the ground up.). Like we didn't even see the grand opening. That is a massive character development moment for her character, that isn't even see. I wanted to see her emotions of opening up P3 on the grand opening night. We were robbed. It's what I dislike about "The Devil's Music".

Piper really seems like a totally different person in S2, after S1. I don't know why, she's just so different. Piper becomes more and more like Holly until season 5 when she doesn't even seem to be pretending anymore. Any time I think of Piper I immediately get a picture of her with bangs because that's the truest form of Piper to me.

Great discussing how season 1 hits us all ....it's funny because it's interesting how when so many would go on about the piper Leo stuff with it all, that bit is for me the weakest bit of the show
I think that's why Phoebe just hit it with me and stuck with me through out ... All the Leo and Piper stuff never interests me
Like some say I imagine season 1 Piper when people say Piper too funnily enough though HMC in season 4 was a peak I feel ....but season 4 was such a peak but that's another thing
Season 1 WA focus on our leads beautifully to hit it from the off and get us on board right away and it worked the PEO LEOOOO LEOOO stuff got a bit jokey in a way and self aware even ... Whereas I loved the detective aspects and being humanist and really protecting the innocent push over the love interest stuff ....
But it's down to taste I guess sone mainly watched it for piper Leo and that's fine but ....yeah I loved the sisters really getting invested exploring using the book scrying and finding things out ....was so exciting and whenever I rewatch charmed I get the serotonin boost from it so very much that first season is right up there
It's funny how it feels very autumn vibe whereas season 2 is like spring summer aesthetic
