When Piper and Phoebe confront Paige in the church where they first try to get her to test her powers, they tell her that the third sister has the power to move objects. Thus, if one died the other sister (Paige) would have received that power. Because they all came from Melinda Warren, and in the Book of Shadows it was that the rising of the Charmed ones would have one with sight, one with movement, and one that can manipulate time; or something of that nature. Therefore, if let's say Piper died, Paige would have to have Pipers power to reconstitute the Charmed ones.
and...
How come Leo and move objects with orbing, that like makes Paige's power pointless because other people can do it besides her. She should have got just plain psychokinesis and orbing instead of orbing and psychokinesis combined.
and I never understood why in the episode where Prue, Phoebe, and Piper go to the future, where Phoebe dies... There powers are really strong. They never become that strong in reality, although Prue wasn't alive. I also never got why Phoebe got three powers and Piper and Paige got two.
I don't think Paige would've received Piper or Phoebe's powers if they died; if she didn't already possess a power, she wouldn't have the potential be charmed, would she? Prue and Piper had their powers prior to the existence of the Power of Three, and Piper and Phoebe after, so I don't see why Paige couldn't have possessed a power outside of it. I think their powers are just an expression of their potential Charmed-status; they're linked. If Paige didn't have one of Melinda's three powers, then she didn't have Charmed-potential to begin with, which she clearly did. Of course, this is all just speculation on my part.
I think her powers just came unbound when she met Piper and Phoebe, since Phoebe cast the spell to unbind the powers of the witches who comprised the Power of Three, and when Paige became a part of their coven, she became affected by the spell as well.
I just don't think she was some back-up witch; if she was a witch, especially a potential Charmed One, she would've had an active power like her sisters. Penny and Grams most likely bound her powers to keep her a secret from the Elders, ensuring that they were covering their bases.
In short, becoming a Charmed One indicated that she had the missing power, not caused it.
