Well, that happened around the same time as all of the bad stuff with Cole. I think she let her personality be ruined by Cole much more than her career, the same way Cole was ruined by her.

I just know that to me, she seemed like a true individual in the beginning of the series. She seemed like someone who was truly unique. Then towards the end there was nothing that made her stand out in that way anymore. I think a lot of things had to do with that, but it seemed like she changed a lot after getting her career. Perhaps, but I don't believe that her career was responsible for the regression of her character.

This is an interesting line of thought, and one I have pondered in a round-about way for a while, but didn't know where to go with it. Much has been said about the introduction of Paige and placing her on the bottom rung of the ladder age and maturity wise. I believe Es has posted a number of thoughts on what was wrong with that, and I have to completely agree....but if you could rewrite, what would you do? I don't think that just because you are the youngest in the family that automatically makes you the flakey one. Lots of homes rear children where the younger kids often grow up to be the strongest and most dynamic. Paige had an entirely different up-bringing. Only children can either end up being very spoiled or very self-sufficient. Her parents were killed, so her life took a 180, which seemed necessary as I can't recall whom else in her life she had to truly lean on. Phoebe, with two older productive sisters and a grandmother, didn't really have to shoulder full responsibility for her actions. Sure she ran away to New York, but when things didn't work out, she just went home and left the job to Piper to pave the way with Prue. Paige should have remained the hard working college graduate, who had a perfect profession for her new found magical talents. This other members have also stated. Being more responsible and level-headed than Phoebe would have been very believeable...and perhaps Paige could have been the future role model Phoebe truly needed. (I could be way off base here, but a story line moving in that direction would have been a very subtle way for Paige to at least borrow Prue's shoes from time to time.) Mind you I do not see her as a replacement, there is none for Prue...but more of an addition well needed and deserved. Phoebe should have been the temporary employee. Bouncing from one little job to another.....dog walker...good, I like it. Baby-sitter, wonderful....she is great with children. Think of all the story lines that could have come from her having premonitions on those gigs... But I would also see her staying in school and becoming what we used to call a professional student. Always learning something, becoming enthusiastic about one topic and then moving on to another. It wouldn't really be a waste of time....but never the less....she could always be in the play-ground of life. With her sisters nodding and saying.....yes, that's our Phoebe! I believe that Phoebe could have been a day-care worker... It probably would have been quite interesting to see that... I agree with GR about Phoebe and Paige. I think while they had the episode where she goes back in time to deal with her parents death, i think that it should have been written that she dealt with it already. Paige could have helped the sisters through Prue's death more being a new person to lean on and a role model for Phoebe. I think that this alternate Charmed reality could make a nice fanfic lol but... i suck at long stories haha i write short articles, songs, ect.

It's not about how Phoebe handled the job. It was bad writing all around. No one leaves an advice columnist in charge of running a newspaper. Even TV GUIDE had commented upon it.

Since when do advice columnists get their own office and assistants? This is nothing like real life at all. In fact, a journalists pay is crap, they get "desks" not offices, they don't get benefits, they don't get assistants, however journalism is quite demanding. My point is that Phoebe is living large compared to normal journalists. Shes just an advice columnist.... which is actually just "filler" stuff in a newspaper. It was more realistic in the first episode with the innocent she was doing the column for.... hard deadline, but "I'm just the advice columnist" made sense. Then we see her office....

I have no problem with Phoebe having a career . . . even as an advice columnist. It's just . . . why did they have to portray her job in such an unrealistic manner, even for a work of fiction?

I think that was a large part of what bothered me about her job. It's like just because this is cute little Phoebe that everyone loves so much, she's going to be made into a mini superstar at work. Her being treated like a princess at work was the last thing post season four Phoebe needed.
This really makes it sound like I hate Phoebe, which I don't at all. I think it would have been better for her development if her career hadn't blossomed into this glamourous thing that always seemed so easy, even when she was stressed about it. And she was always getting so much from it, with photo shoot opportunitues and, like Elise remarked once or twice, getting paid very well, that it seemed unrealistic like other posters have said.

Yeah, the superstar path was a bit ridiculous. I didn't mind Phoebe becoming an advice columnist. But it was unecessary to turn her into another Dr. Ruth or Dear Abby.

Phoebe's rise to the top seemed a little sudden. Something like being famous for being a columnist takes time and hard work. Why do I have a feeling that it was... magic?

I hated phoebe's job. And her becoming this top shot celebrity. Imo it would have been better if she became an author who writes books for children. I think the show even alluded this somewhere in S1 or S2?

I think the show even alluded this somewhere in S1 or S2? This would be such a good career for her. She had such a good imagination and it could be something she did mostly on her own so she never had a 9-5 job, which I just can't see as believable for her. I've thought before that she could novelize her and her sisters' experience as witches, adapting it to protect their identities and making it more age-appropriate if it's for children. I'd love it if it turned out that she wasn't only creative in making up stories, but was also a good artist, and maybe she could illustrate the books herself in the Book of Shadows style.

I'm fine with the job. I don't like her celebrity status, that came from it.

I hated the celebrity status and that she didn't earn the Job. Now, if Phoebe took journalism classes in college and worked her way from the bottom, I'd be okay with it.
She did have good skills to get to the bottom of the truth. She was a very good researcher as evident in the first season when she'd always look through books and use her laptop to research stuff that helped them figure stuff out for their latest demon or warlock.
Now if she worked for a newspaper as a journalist, not an advice column I'd be fine with that.

I absolutely hated what they did to Phoebe's career.
I would have loved if she decided to become a Forensic Psychologist after her time in Jury Duty, she seemed to enjoy the court environment.
