But was it about them protecting the innocent as well? It was their intention and good nature.
I loved them as super-heros too. It was entertaining. But it easily took the focus of the premise of the show: sisters who happen to be witches rather than the reverse - or even -witches who happen to be superheros.
It kind of reminds me of the Power Puff girls (I don't know if they are sisters). Or actually maybe even Sailor Moon.
Both shows I liked.
But Charmed's point of difference for me was the relationship of the three different Halliwell sisters and how they interacted with each other, the outside world and their witchcraft (not their magic!).
At the time, Smallville and Pokemon offered the superheros. I feel like the more Charmed became like that - it went away from 'soft power' or the lesson that its not always about power at the end of the day. However I do thank 9/11 made people want to see the hero's and masculinity more and the girl-power sentiment had changed and moved away from the 90's, so I can see how they were trying to buy into that changing viewership.
Dont get me wrong - I still enjoy those super hero action episodes too- but it was the small things of sometimes the Charmed Ones learning that they dont really have to do anything - just have good intentions that actually makes you powerful. Phoebe is a prime example of that. She is the least powerful (or perceived to be) but she is just as strong, opinionated and an equal component to the sisterhood/power of three.
Stillman sisters is a good episode to watch. Very funny and tries to stay true to the mythology of the premise. But Alyssa Milano giving a BJ under the table of a restaurant - come on! And WRITERS - do a bit of planning to figure out whether Aunt Phoebe is going to pash/screw her future nephew! It was just careless.
I feel like The Wedding From Hell at least is trying to understand what kind of Charmed it wants to be and we kind of ok know this is kind of what a sh!tty episode is going to be like - but the sisterly component is definitely still there which I believe saves it from being as bad as 95% of episodes from Seasons 5-8.
I don't mind it taking the whole focus of the show because it wasn't always the same evil, they were facing. I enjoy an ORIGINAL ('cause a lot of these Reboots and Re-makes, be getting on my nerves) concept displaying female empowerment, and OG Charmed really represents strong female characters that are protectors of the world. I don't need 10-20 minutes of the episode displaying their bond, as sisters, as it's not really relevant how well they combat against evil. Sure, it makes for a nice story, for the first five minutes, but I really want to move onto the next point.
And, that is a fair point, in how the show differs from any ordinary action hero story. At the same time, I'm still perfectly content without wasting every 10-20 minutes of the episode wasting time on their bond as sisters, when the clock is ticking in protecting the world from evil.
While, that's true you don't have to take action to be good intentioned, however that's not going to entertain nor last long for a general audience. That's just the reality. IMO, I think the concept of female heroes is how Charmed lasted for 4 more seasons AFTER Prue. That's such a STRONG message for the general audience.
Alyssa Milano didn't perform a BJ under a table LOL And, Phoebe wasn't going to screw her nephew, what are you talking about? I had this conversation on Reddit. Lemme link you my post regarding that: https://www.reddit.com/r/charmed/comments/p63uwx/its_bothering_me_that_in_the_power_of_3_blondes/h9b0i39
No amount of sisterly bonding, for me (anyway), makes the Wedding From Hell better than the actual good episodes that did happen in S5-S8. But, again, you already made it clear that the sisterly bonding is going to surpass any episode without it. We're at an impasse with this one.
EDIT: I'm trying not to swear because the Rules of this board doesn't want us to, but IDK how else to say it without swearing. So, if I get in trouble for swearing, I apologize for swearing in advance. Bottom line is, I love seeing the ladies kick ass! Reasons why I like S3 Prue, a lot because she's kicking! Reason why I like the later seasons because the Charmed Ones are kicking! Reason why I like Billie is because she's (also) kicking! And, I love seeing that! Makes me feel empowered and shout "you go, girl!"
