Thank-you Tim and Melinda. Having rewatched season 1 a few months back. I gotta say season 1 is very underrated, and it has so many good episodes. I really loved the show here, before whitelighters and Leo got so much focus. I love seeing the charmed ones on there own and thinking for themselves, it created a sense of element of suspense wondering how they will get out of each episode alive.

That's why Season 1's my favorite. It was when the show stuck to its premise of "sisters who happen to be witches" the best.

Plus it had two certain Warlocks that I liked Still easily the best villains the show's ever had. Imagine that, Big Bads that actually use their brains and think things out.

Easy win easy! The sisters were almost unaware of their powers when they met Rex and Hanna!
Better Zankou, or Crone or Cole, also Tempus, the Seer and Troxa were not so bad

I think you mean inexperienced, Sol.
However, the sisters still managed to defeat some Warlocks despite that. That's the reason why Rex and Hannah did not attack them directly, rather they maneuvered the sisters into giving up their powers.
If that walking deus ex machina called Leo had not been there to intervene when he did, the sisters a**es would have been grass and R&H would have been the lawn mowers.

Exatly, inexperienced, unaware of their powers because they did'nt know how to use them, how to write spells or to cook up new potions
Grams hasn't raised three potential Charmed One, huge mistake that left them almost defenseless, having to use only their instinct. Certainly, Grams died suddenly but she was ill for some time, she'ld have to worry about the ignorance of her grandcdaughters and the danger to which they'ld be exposed

Exatly, inexperienced, unaware of their powers because they did'nt know how to use them, how to write spells or to cook up new potions Grams hasn't raised three potential Charmed One, huge mistake that left them almost defenseless, having to use only their instinct. Certainly, Grams died suddenly but she was ill for some time, she'ld have to worry about the ignorance of her grandcdaughters and the danger to which they'ld be exposed This reminds me of a PM conversation I'm having at a different site. She's doing her first re-watch in a long time and brought up something similar. First her review:
I commented on all of this, but here's what I particularly want to mention now since it's on topic with this idea of Grams and her not training the Charmed Ones at all. I'm going to break up our next three PMs so I don't have to use quotes in quotes and so it's more like a conversation:
ME: I particularly liked the idea of how they should've had *someone* around to help them during this first period - the fact that they could've done so much so quickly and so well really does feel strange.
HER: Glad I'm not the only one. Everyone starts somewhere, right?
ME: Exactly so!
Funny, rather than Leo (because I like how they introduce him), I find myself wanting either their mother or grandmother to have a chance to appear as ghosts and tell them how, or, better, what a place this would've been to introduce Melinda Halliwell - no, not Warren, since all Halliwell women keep their maiden names... (roll eyes at Grams - of course I mean Melinda Warren) with her allowed to act the part of their cousin for their first year.
HER: That's actually a really good idea. Grams was such a hypocrite though-"The women keep their names in this family!" GRAMS, YOU TOOK A MORTAL'S NAME AND KEPT IT, YOU DORK. Haha.
ME: And naturally the true dork is Kern…he’s the one who forgot (as you will see), that originally Victor’s name IN THE OPENING CREDITS was “Tony Dennison as Victor Hallwell”! They just wanted Piper to remain a Halliwell, and maybe were already planning on them having a son who they could name Wyatt…
But especially if having Melinda Warren teaching them meant no Leo...oh, heaven! I will always count introducing whitelighters, and especially matching one of them up with one of the Charmed Ones, as Charmed's worst mistake - unless Leo had gone and stayed gone after "Love Hurts" like he was originally supposed to... then his and Piper's love story would've been the best one on Charmed rather than one of the worst.
HER: If Leo had just stayed their guide and did not become romantically involved with any of them, I think he could have stayed and been an awesome character. Unfortunately, it wasn't too long before sex and all that trash became Charmed's main appeal, so they had to do something, I suppose…
ME: I read on another site where someone set up an idea for a reboot where rather than their whitelighter, Leo was their brother...no worries about him falling for one of the Charmed Ones that way!

Grams wasn't fully convinced that her granddaughter'ld become the Charmed One or maybe she didn't wish that destiny for them, we all remembered Pre Witched
When Charmed begins, the sisters know nothing about magic and we learn with them to understand the world we are going into and I liked their inexperience, their surprise, their feel their way along the magic
It's clear that they'ld face Rex or Jeremy with less problems if they had been more experienced

Huh? They didn't have problems at all. Yes, it took them a while to vanquish them but only because it too some time for their bond to strenghen, the way it should've taken time for the second set to do anything. The first set knew exactly what a poppet was, how to put together a potion, how to cast a spell. It should've been so much tougher for them than it was when as you said, Grams didn't think they'd be Charmed so she didn't train them at all. It should've been a lot more difficult.

Remember that Rex knew better than to confront the sisters directly, as he explained in Wicca Ency. He and Hannah knew that if they had just blundered in, like so many of the later seasons lame duck villains, they would have had their behinds handed to them. That's why they chose another method of attack, the blackmail route, and it worked. It was Leo, not the sisters, that saved the day at the end.
I always found it silly that Rex and Hannah tried to kill the sisters at that point, it simply wasn't necessary. They'd won, they had the powers. They could have just said "Thanks for the powers. Ta ta." to the sisters and left them high and dry. And Prue still had that murder rap hanging over her head.
So once again I had to fill in the blanks. The following is an excerpt from my fourth R&H Chronicles Story, Revelations:
"Wait! You two tried to kill us a decade ago. Remember?" Piper asked.
"That was not my decision, Piper. Hannah and I were only interested in getting your powers." Rex replied: "However, the Source himself ordered you to be killed. He was probably worried that if you were left alive, you would no doubt attempt to recover your powers."
That was the only explanation that made any sense to me. The sisters probably would have done just that had R&H spared them in Wicca Envy. Clearly, that was a risk the Source was not willing to take.

I always thought the reason they knew about poppets etc was because they looked it up in the book. Piper was a cook so could probably identify most herbs just by looking at them and Grams probably had a chest of witchy supplies lying around.

Thanks for the support and patience everyone. Things aren't any better really, he fell and broke his arm so I've been at the hospital all week... just really hoping he'll be able to pass away where he wants; so sorting stuff for him to come home ASAP.
Anyway I'm in major need of a distraction from real life at the moment, so you can expect "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "Malice in Wonderland" this coming Monday.

Again, P3Nathan, my heart goes out to you and your family, especially your dad. Now he's reminding me of my grandpa who always told everyone he wanted to go to his retirement home - and he'd show the picture of his and Grandma's gravestone... When he finally died and we had his funeral, that's what Mom said during her eulogy - that we were finally taking her dad to his retirement home and she hoped he'd enjoy it forever...
Looking forward to the reviews...

Skin Deep
Aka- I've Got You Under My Skin
That’s not a joke title... I just never really got “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” in relation to the episode. Figured using “beauty is only skin deep” is a bit more fitting given that Javna stole youth and photographed models. Good song though. Anyway...
Phoebe looking adorable in all her season 1ishness meets Piper at Quake (Quake’s debut by the way). While sat at the bar, Phoebe has a premonition of a guy called Alec/Alek coming to flirt with her. Not only does she receive this vision simply by looking at him, she also knows his name and what he’ll say all from just one little flash of the future.
We meet Brittany with her angel tattoo and it’s not long before she is taken by an unknown somebody.
Piper watches a terribly inaccurate documentary about the Salem witch trials. I won’t complain about that too much though, because I do love Piper's subplot in this episode.
The sisters discuss Prue sleeping with Andy and also about not using their powers. Perfect example of sisterly and witchly themes interlocking as was often the case early on.
Piper talks to Pastor Williams before attempting to open the church door. She’s about to grab the handle when she hears a rumble of thunder- she jumps with a rather hilarious “Oh sh!t” expression before running off before she gets fried. Hehe.
Another work place debut- Buckland’s Auction House. We’re introduced to Rex (the one Charmed actor that I’ve actually met by the way) and Prue telekinetically plays with the elevator.
Phoebe meets Stefan and he invites her to a photo shoot. We soon see that Stefan is actually Javna and he has his studio set up all ‘dark magic chic’. He takes the youth from a young woman with his eye beams and cackles into a mirror. What is Javna anyway? Demon, or just a really old warlock? They haven’t established demons yet, so I guess really old warlock?
Piper is concerned that Prue had sex with Andy on the first date. Piper, hun, they’ve known each other since they were rugrats, chill. She’s doing a good job of looking like a quietly nervous wreck though.
Pastor Williams comes back and Piper talks to him about “her friend”... she’s clearly rather upset, worried and in need of some comforting. Williams goes all dead eyed and says “put her to death, she’s evil” Well gee, I sure hope someone else teaches Sunday school! Unsurprisingly, Piper looks like she’s about to cry.
Phoebe meets an old couple at risk of losing their house and has a premonition of the lottery numbers. She gives them the numbers, but then also takes a ticket for herself. Tut tut, naughty Phoebe.
Prue tears into Phoebe for using her powers and while Phoebe’s lottery stunt is like the most blatant personal gain ever, Prue is being a massive hypocrite here. In all this drama, Piper freezes the room- this is the final straw and she leaves hissing “I hate being a witch”
Now this is the scene where Holly really shines. I think this was when I decided that Holly was the best actress of the three to be honest. Piper is in tears over not wanting to be a witch and my heart actually breaks for her a little; especially when she sobs: “I just want to be normal again!” Just shows how much the character fell, because I sure as hell don’t feel this much sympathy in later seasons. There’s also some very good Piper-Phoebe bonding, with Phoebe reassuring Piper of who she is. It’s a very well acted and well written scene.
Oh also from that scene- Phoebe: Besides if anyone should be concerned with being bad, it’s me right? Oh boy, talk about foreshadowing!
Piper faces her fear, opens the church door and steps in. With a huge grin on her face she exclaims “I’m good! (Chuckle)” and that along with the previous scene are what made me fall in love with season one Piper (also Dead Man Dating, but we'll get to that). Oh also she finds old Brittany... I have to say, the Javna stuff almost feels like an afterthought this episode; the character moments with the sisters are where this episode sparkles... the rest is a bit meh.
Back at Bucklands. Prue has a meeting with Rob and Ellen... um I mean Rex and Hannah. We quickly establish from her icy demeanor that Hannah is not there to make friends. She knocks a paint pot over and Prue magically shields herself (activating the power with her hands once again by the way). Having passed the “is she a witch?” test, the warlock couple hire her.
Phoebe has been taken by Javna, but Prue and Piper get there just in time to stop him stealing her youth. Prue knocks him back- they haven’t added the zoom-squint yet, so it doesn’t have the same visual impact. Javna is vanquished with The Hand of Fatima, I could explain what that is, but it doesn’t really matter to be honest. “Very cool” is Phoebe’s response. Heh.
Phoebe playfully calls Prue a hypocrite like I did earlier over the whole power thing. Another thing season one did that didn’t happen later on- the sisters have flaws and that’s okay, so long as they’re acknowledged at some point.
Phoebe’s lottery ticket is magically erased due to it being personal gain. The sisters toast- “To the power of three; whether we like it or not.”
Next up- Daddy Victor makes his debut, pre-face transplant.

Welcome back, Nathan, these reviews were greatly missed.
You've met Neil Roberts? Cool.
For those of you unfamiliar with the "Rob and Ellen" reference, Leigh-Allyn Baker (Hannah)had a recurring role on Will & Grace as Ellen, a friend of W&G. Rob was Ellen's boyfriend, later husband. Rob and Ellen would appear on W&G occasionally throughout the shows run.
Yep, this was the debut of Rex and Hannah, characters that I grew to like. Seventeen years later, they're with me still.
