Except the problem wasn't with the writing (this time at least), it was the budget, or lack thereof. They had virtually no money going into Season Eight.
Building new sets or going on location was out of the question. They could only use the sets they already had, so that meant the sisters had to stay at the Manor. So the writers had to come up with this "cousins" idea to pad things out until they could have the sisters revert to their true identities.
Yes, they did build one new set, Phoebe's Loft. However, that was done at the expense of P3, which they had to tear down to make room for it. More studio space was beyond their means.
If you ask me, when Kern saw the budget for S8, he should have told the WB to get stuffed and walked. Joss Whedon would have done that, had the WB tried to screw him over that way.

Agreed. They could havd had the manor being completely destroyed, like they used with Kill Billie. Vol 2 after the battle with Zankou. It makes way more sense that the Charmed Ones left San Francisco and started a new life elsewhere. It bugs me they stayed in town even with new identities. Come on, who falls for three cousins living in the manor suddenly. Demons cant be that dumb. However the ending in Something Wicca to me implies they would leave San Francisco. Had that been the end. Why would they still stay. A new life means starting elsewhere. The ending in Something Wicca. It felt like a decent ending and leaves more mystery on what happens to them next. I just loved the eery music and sound of Prue's ghost (presumably) closing the door one last time. You're so right, a Kill Billie-style explosion at the end of 'Something Wicca...' would've made it such an impactful series finale. After all, you can't "win" without having to lose things precious to you in the process, which the sisters had learned time and time again. So, as heartbreaking as it would've been to see the beautiful Manor in ruins, it would be bittersweet moment because the sisters, and the audience, would understand that it was necessary to stop Zankou. It also would've signalled the end of an era as the sisters retire and go off to lead their coveted normal lives - kind of like Sunnydale being destroyed in BtVS (if I dare to compare!). What would've made it even more epic would've been if Shannen could've been persuaded back for 'Death Becomes Them' instead of Inspector whats-his-name. Exactly. Plus the Manor destroyed counts as a major death and I consider having a huge impact. Exactly right like Buffy. Good point about Shannen. And having her ghost at the end with her smiling back at her sisters as they walk away. Perfect.

In a way, the destruction of the Manor (and of course, the Nexus) would symbolise not just the end of the Charmed Ones' "run" but also the entire Halliwell family legacy coming to a close - but for the Greater Good. Yes! It would've been lovely to see them somehow thwart Zankou as he resurrects Prue's body but they would still be so rattled by seeing her again that Zankou would still be able to steal the Book. The plot would maybe need to be tweaked a bit. Personally, I'd prefer something similar to the Buffy episode 'Conversations with Dead People' in which the First Evil tricks the Scoobies into thinking they are talking to their departed loved ones - that would've been awesome for Zankou to do!

Definitely. That would make one hell of a series final or 2-parter. I like the idea of season 7 merging with 5 as the last season. That would be a great 5 year story for the show.

Yeah, if this is one of your first re-watches, you might want to first re-watch the whole thing and decide what does or doesn't bother you, and then start over with S4 and continue whatever will make the rest of Charmed enjoyable for you. Some fans like the entire series, so then they should just re-watch the others. Some like DStarr don't like the way Cole was handled in S5 or having Wyatt be so powerful or the differences in the Avatars between S5 and S7, so she came up with her method. Deano likes the Avatars, so he keeps more. It's totally up to you how you want to do it so you can enjoy Charmed YOUR way! This is my third or fourth watch. I've decided to just watch it all the way through again because I do have a soft spot for Paige and I've started the re-run that way. S4 can be really alienating for me though, because Prue is my favourite sister and S3 for me is the best, so if I didn't have the later seasons with Paige I actually agree I probably wouldn't like her just because I'd feel like she is a replacement rather than an actual sister. Next time I watch the series, I'll skip the filler episodes of S1 and S2 to make about 16 episode seasons and watch pretty much all of S3 and S4. I might consider ending it at Witch Way Now, or if I don't I'll alter S5 and S6 to not include any Cole whose character was completely ruined and also take out the bad parts like the S5 avatars and most of Wyatt's superpowers. I'll definitely end it on S7 with the Zankou storyline; this way I can have more freedom to interpret what happens to the sisters after the finale I love this idea of a re-watch, but you have me curious. Which episodes do you count as filler ones in order to turn S1 and S2 into 16-episodes apiece?

This is how I like to watch Charmed:
Season 1:
1x01: "Something Wicca This Way Comes" 1x02: "I've Got You Under My Skin" 1x04: "Dead Man Dating" 1x07: "The Fourth Sister" 1x08: "The Truth Is Out There… and It Hurts" 1x09: "The Witch Is Back" 1x10: "Wicca Envy" 1x13: "From Fear to Eternity" 1x14: "Secrets and Guys" 1x15: "Is There a Woogy in the House?" 1x16: "Which Prue Is It, Anyway?" 1x17: "That '70s Episode" 1x19: "Out of Sight" 1x20: "The Power of Two" 1x21: "Love Hurts" 1x22: "Déjà Vu All Over Again"
Skipped episodes:
1x03: "Thank You for Not Morphing" 1x05: "Dream Sorcerer" 1x06: "The Wedding from Hell" 1x11: "Feats of Clay" 1x12: "The Wendigo" 1x18: "When Bad Warlocks Turn Good"
Season 1's my favorite season, but it definitely still had some awkward filler episodes. I'd also rather ignore the existence of the original Victor and the ensuing continuity issues with James Read's Victor.
Season 2:
2x02: "Morality Bites" 2x01: "Witch Trial" 2x08: "P3 H2O" 2x10: "Heartbreak City" 2x11: "Reckless Abandon" 2x12: "Awakened" 2x13: "Animal Pragmatism" 2x14: "Pardon My Past" 2x16: "Murphy's Luck" 2x17: "How to Make a Quilt Out of Americans" 2x18: "Chick Flick" 2x19: "Ex Libris" 2x20: "Astral Monkey" 2x21: "Apocalypse, Not" 2x22: "Be Careful What You Witch For"
Skipped Episodes:
2x03: "The Painted World" 2x04: "The Devil's Music" 2x05: "She's a Man, Baby, a Man!" 2x06: "That Old Black Magic" 2x07: "They're Everywhere" 2x09: "Ms. Hellfire" 2x15: "Give Me A Sign"
I love Season 2, but like Season 1, it still had some awkward filler episodes, especially in the first half of the season. Don't like any of the episodes with either Jenny or Bane (except "Witch Trial"). I also prefer to watch "Morality Bites" as the first episode, since it's so detached from the rest of the season and even seems to chronologically take place before "Witch Trial" (ie. Piper and Leo still together, no Dan and Jenny).
Season 3:
3x01: "The Honeymoon's Over" 3x02: "Magic Hour" (ending only) 3x03: "Once Upon a Time" 3x04: "All Halliwell's Eve" 3x05: "Sight Unseen" 3x06: "Primrose Empath" 3x07: "Power Outage" 3x08: "Sleuthing with the Enemy" 3x09: "Coyote Piper" 3x10: "We All Scream for Ice Cream" 3x14: "The Good, the Bad and the Cursed" 3x15: "Just Harried" 3x16: "Death Takes a Halliwell" 3x17: "Pre-Witched" 3x18: "Sin Francisco" 3x22: "All Hell Breaks Loose"
Skipped Episodes:
3x02: "Magic Hour" (rest of episode) 3x11: "Blinded by the Whitelighter" 3x12: "Wrestling with Demons" 3x13: "Bride and Gloom" 3x19: "The Demon Who Came in from the Cold" 3x20: "Exit Strategy" 3x21: "Look Who's Barking"
The Demon Brotherhood episodes bore me to tears, so I usually skip those. Considering the way AHBL starts off, I can easily watch the episode without having seen any of those, anyways. Also don't care for some of the standalone episodes from the middle of the season.
Season 4:
4x01-02: "Charmed Again" 4x03: "Hell Hath No Fury" 4x05: "Size Matters" 4x06: "A Knight to Remember" 4x08: "Black as Cole" 4x09: "Muse to My Ears" 4x10: "A Paige from the Past" (Paige parts only) 4x12: "Lost and Bound" 4x13: "Charmed and Dangerous" 4x14: "The Three Faces of Phoebe" 4x15: "Marry-Go-Round" 4x16: "The Fifth Halliwheel" 4x17: "Saving Private Leo" 4x19: "We're Off to See the Wizard" 4x20: "Long Live the Queen" 4x21: "Womb Raider" 4x22: "Witch Way Now?"
Skipped Episodes:
4x04: "Enter the Demon" 4x07: "Brain Drain" 4x10: "A Paige from the Past" (Phoebe/Cole parts) 4x11: "Trial by Magic" 4x18: "Bite Me"
This is the most serialized season by far, so it's tough to skip episodes here. Chucked the worst filler episodes from the early part of the season, as well as the vampire episode (which is luckily the least essential of the late Season 4 episodes).
Seasons 5-7:
5x15: "The Day the Magic Died" 5x16: "Baby's First Demon" 5x20: "Sense and Sense Ability" 5x18: "Cat House"
6x10: "Chris-Crossed" 6x15: "I Dream of Phoebe" 6x16: "The Courtship of Wyatt's Father" 6x17: "Hyde School Reunion" (Chris/Victor parts only) 6x18: "Spin City" 6x20: "A Wrong Day's Journey into Right" 6x21-22: "It's a Bad, Bad, Bad, Bad World"
7x20: "Imaginary Fiends" 7x14: "Carpe Demon" 7x15: "Show Ghouls" 7x16: "The Seven Year Witch" 7x17: "Scry Hard" 7x18: "Little Box of Horrors" 7x19: "Freaky Phoebe" 7x21: "Death Becomes Them" 7x22: "Something Wicca This Way Goes...?"
I don't want to throw away all of the later seasons, so I instead chop the best parts down into one combined final season. Wyatt's birth, the Crone episodes, and "Cat House" are all I need from Season 5. Then, I'll skip straight to "Chris-Crossed" and get into the Chris/Wyatt storyline. After that, I'll go to "Imaginary Fiends" (which serves as a good transition away from the Chris story) and then the rest of late Season 7, finishing the series with "Something Wicca This Way Goes." This way, I can pretend that Cole never appeared between "Witch Way Now" and "Seven Year Witch," and that neither the Avatars or Season 8 ever happened. This also smooths out many of the inconsistencies with Chris' storyline (since I skip "Oh My Goddess" and the early Season 6 episodes).

From S1, I'd skip Thank You For Not Morphing, Dream Sorcerer (even though I really like the sub-plot with Phoebe and Piper - that should have been the episode and it could have focused on them learning about the consequences of personal gain), The Wedding From Hell, Feats of Clay, The Wendigo and When Bad Warlocks Turn Good. This is close to being my favourite season because I like their character portrayals best. I would get rid of Secrets and Guys too if Leo's identity wasn't revealed in it. S2 would be The Painted World, That Old Black Magic, They're Everywhere, Heartbreak City, Reckless Abandon and Animal Pragmatism. I really love this season too. This is the last great Phoebe season for me as well, because her selfishness and attention to Cole is infuriating.

I think the series should have ended after Season 7. Agreed. I don't even own season 8. I think the closer for 7 ended with class. The girls walked away, Darryl knew the truth and Prue shut the door. Nice touch. Some times too much of a tasty thing can make you sick. You know like chocolate and well, wine.
