Charmed CW Reboot Ordered to Pilot: Attempt Number 3

Just imagine after all this flack this reboot is getting, it goes to series and the pilot blows us away. How crazy would that be? I was talking to my professor about the reboot and she's pretty excited about it. She said the mix feelings about this reboot reminds her of when Hollywood decided to revive Mission Impossible into a movie franchise and how the original cast were very unhappy about the changes. Alas, the Mission Impossible film series is still going strong, brought new fans and created their own lane from the original material. We could get that with this re-imagining. A new creative approach that brings something new but respectfully nodding to the original

Also people were unhappy with Ghostbuster female reboot and it still did really great in the box office.

That would be such a surprise, and let's hope it turns out to be better than what it is on paper. We haven't got any trailers, previews or cast photos yet.

Upfronts in May will treat us to a full 2-5 minute preview presentation of the pilot episode from The CW - If it goes to series. That is when we will have a chance to see more of the pilot.

I just hope they don't rehash too many plotlines from the original. It needs to be a new take while nodding the original. But what if they attempt to do a similar story to the original and did it way better than Charmed ever did. Guess we'll find out.

I could be totally wrong and Macy's boyfriend might end up being the Henry character. Since this seems more of an S4-8 remake than a S1-3 one, that's definitely possible.

We don't know if Macy is black or not though.

Maybe he is not Cole and Macy/Galvin are the main couple of the show, they will have a on and off relationship like Xo and Rogelio on Jane The Virgin.

In Galvin's description they say that he is "very supportive". Well maybe he won't be that much supportive when he learns that Macy is a witch...

Since there's a couple like than on Jane the Virgin, it's highly likely that there will be one like that on the reboot, so I hope you're right. Although he might end up being like Andy - unable to accept her as a witch...

That would be funny since in its own way Charmed was a reboot of The Craft.

You might be right dear, especially if they cast an actress playing Mel who is 33, wouldn't surprise me they cast our leading sister with someone in their 30s closer in age to Harry who is played by a 40-year-old actor. 

Maybe we'll all be wrong and be pleasantly surprised with the pilot. We can hope.

Just remember that the ages of the actors have absolutely nothing to do with the age of their character. In the same way, just because one has is descended from Puerto Ricans does not mean that she'll play a Latina. I think too many people are being fooled into thinking otherwise just for clickbait.

Your right dear. After all, they are casting for talent and who fits the character best regardless of the actor's age or race.

Another thing I'm curious about dears is the set-up of the series. Will the show consist of stand-alone episodes starting off, or will the first episode even have a villain the sisters vanquish? 

It could be more serialized than episodic, and the first episode's story continues into the second episode. I guess we'll find out.

There needs to be a certain measure of phenotypical compatibility, even in spite of using acting talent as the barometer for quality. Supposedly this show is going to be focused on three sisters -- blood related sisters, yes? Since they hail from the same parents then they should retain some physical similarities to each other. In the original show, such an image was lost when they chose to replace the more familiar and compatible Prue with Paige who hardly even resembled the other two sisters. I want there to be some measure of accuracy with what the sisters are supposed to physically represent.

I’ve noticed so many people online are thinking it’s going to be a Latina based family and are waiting to see who they cast as the parents. Also it’s thought that the remaining sister yet to be cast may be a half sister like Paige

Oh, that goes without saying. It's why I think it will be an S4-8 reboot rather than an S1-3, which is fine with me because then what I count as Charmed will remain untouched.

I remember Practical Magic. Funny I felt Charmed was more inspired by that than The Craft. Because Practical Magic was focused on sisters, The Craft was just on four teenagers. 

Too bad, the reboot isn't just inspired by Charmed and goes under a new name, but we all know why that is.

Urgh, some of that dialogue from those audition tapes don't inspire me with a lot of confidence. They make Mel and Madison seem like S1 Prue and Billie on steroids, and there already seems to be a lot of typical CW angsty teen romance drama in it. I hope they don't make the Madison character too ditzy. See, Alyssa brought such charm to Phoebe, even though she was supposed to be a bit of a rebel. Nevertheless, maybe they will do it justice on the actual show.

Saw this on another site and would absolutely LOVE if the reboot was more like a combination of Classic Charmed and this. I know it won't, but...

I'll give you an example of what I consider a truly feminist portrayal of women in the Danish show Rita:

It's about 2 very different, but thoroughly unconventional women in a conventional feminine profession (teachers). 1's middle-aged, rebellious, model-gorgeous naturally but never primped (Rita). The other is what Hollywood would portray as a hopeless loser: overweight, Awkward TM and very geeky (Hjordis). Here, however, we're never asked to judge Hjordis that way because no one on the show does. She's portrayed as competent, warm-hearted, loveable and works as comic relief in the sense that we laugh WITH her, not AT her. She steals the show in fact. She also gets happily married to en equally geeky and lovable man and has a child. The show asserts twice and very loudly that her differences are actually her strengths and there's no need for her to become Normal TM, because that would crush her and her family's spirit.

Rita's a borderline sex addict, but we never ever see that exploited for porny purposes. She's never behaves or dresses like a Sexy Woman TM. In fact, she turns down an overconfident Cole-type character because she has no use for Bad Boys TM. Many traits make her a truly amazing female character (and revolutionary by Hollywood standards).

The show is centered around the friendship and work of these 2 women. Men are always around, but they never come to the forefront and swallow the womens' lives. The last season also has Rita reconnect to her best friend from her teens, and that story (including flashbacks from their teens) is truly the best and the most real portrayal of female friendship I've ever seen. I'm so impressed by it that I propose creating a Rita test to replace the Bechdel test ;-). Seriously - this and Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries are my gold standard for female-friendly TV.

Now, I'm not naive to expect anything even in this stratosphere from any Hollywood production. I can only hope for something in the league of Jane the Virgin at best. But the point is, it CAN be done and it's actually very simple: just portray women as actual full humans on screen with no trade-offs such as catering to the male gaze, empty platitudes or 'male as default' casting.

Love what you brought over Es. That would be so great, too bad I doubt the writers or The CW would go for something like that.
