If Prue didn't die, but another sister had to die so Paige could be introduced, which one between Phoebe and Piper?
I'm interested to see what people at the Charmed Cafe think. This is just a what if question, so please keep all the Shannen being fired talk out of this on why it can't work and try and have a little fun with thinking from a story point of view.

Phoebe.
I think Prue and Piper were too entwined as the closest sisters and as friends for one of them to lose the other. We saw what happened when Piper lost Prue. I think it would have been a similar disaster if Prue lost Piper.
Paige was the most like Phoebe anyway. With those three we have Prue, the oldest and most responsible; Piper, the middle and heart of the family; and Paige, the carefree and independent one with a creative streak.
After Prue died, the circle lost leadership and direction. Without Piper, it would lose heart. Without Phoebe, it would lose its creative spark and adventure, but that would then be replaced by Paige.

Piper
Piper and Prue were too close and Paige would've felt even more like an outsider than she did with Prue gone.
Without Piper there's no Wyatt or Chris. This also makes for a better show as it wouldn't just be about Piper's family as it would continue to be if Piper was there.
And if Phoebe died, they'd still try to make Paige too much the baby sister she never was. With Piper gone and Prue still the Oldest and Phoebe the Baby, Paige had a better chance to be the Only Child she should've been and the fights between her and Prue would've been hilarious with poor Phoebe trying to play mediator and not succeeding.
I'm sure with Prue still there, she's be the one who would turn into the Power of One and Poor, Poor Pitiful Prue no matter who died.
So I'd like that version of S4-8 as much as I like the current - which isn't much.
Had this been done at the end of Season Two, I'd say Phoebe just so she'd get a chance to remain my Phoebs. But by this point she was already PhoeME so I already didn't like her, just like by this point I didn't like Piper and didn't like Prue.

Loosing piper instead of Prue makes more sense for me. Piper was the one to die originally in AHBL before time was reversed so it makes sense for a “what if” scenario.
In my “What If” story scenario, time was reversed and Piper is the one dead after going through the wall instead of Prue. Leo and phoebe find their way back to the manor but the angel of death is already there taking Piper. Leo and phoebe object, but the Angel of death just says it was just her time. And no amount of time reversal was going to change that. And he also warns Leo against trying anything, that no amount of his meddling would fix this one. That It won’t work. He then leaves with Piper. Leo and phoebe are devastated but Leo proceeds to heal Prue and still tries to heal Piper also but it doesn’t work. They tell Prue after she’s healed what happened. Prue is very sad and she begins to cry but she’s not mad at the angel of death. She tells phoebe and Leo that there is nothing they could have done if it was her time. This is based on her experience with death in “death takes a halliwell”. Leo obviously is not having it and won’t believe it, he orbs out in anger saying he’ll find a way and fix it. Phoebe tries to stop him and calls for him back but Prue tells phoebe to let him go
Prue and phoebe mourn Piper. But we know Prue and phoebe worked together very well in the past so they are able to work through the entire situation by staying close to each other and working through their emotions together. I also see Leo trying various different ways to bring Piper back as corporeal or even convincing the Elders to make her a white lighter so they could be together. Nothing is working for him. Leo goes into that mode where he’s not being a whitelighter anymore and is off on his own mission. Prue and phoebe can’t get through to him because he’s trying to fix the whole situation with Piper. Paige comes into their lives and with phoebe and prues help they get Paige up to speed much faster, into her orbing and healing powers and Paige becomes their own sister/whitelighter.
In this scenario both Prue and phoebe are still committed to being charmed and saving innocents, are happy bitter/sweet with the news about Paige. It brings them promise and hope of having the power of three and a possible way of finding a way to get Piper back somehow and in some form someday. Also another thing Prue and phoebe continue to do is demand to see Piper. Anytime they talk to the elders or patty or grams, that’s the first topic that comes up. They always try to use it as a bargaining chip. Especially whenever the elders ask for any favor, they demand to see Piper.

Maybe he would be more willing to accept being an Elder if the offer came up?

Loosing piper instead of Prue makes more sense for me. Piper was the one to die originally in AHBL before time was reversed so it makes sense for a “what if” scenario. Ultimately losing Piper is oddly poetic, considering that she died in the first go when she was shot. I know that a big part of reversing time was to keep their secret hidden, but the bigger part was to save Piper. It would be so devastating yet make so much sense if Piper died after Shax's attack the second time around too. It seems like a lesson that the Angel of Death would teach them, that it's inevitable, and they can't play around with it the same way they can reverse time to erase a mistake they made about exposing their secret. You all make really good points about how the future would be better in some ways if it were Piper who died. I didn't consider that Prue and Piper would become closer than ever if Phoebe were to die, and then that would exclude Paige. If Piper dies, it keeps more of a balance between everyone. Prue and Phoebe have a love/hate relationship going on, and Paige is a stranger. It keeps them from forming a two-to-one alliance. And it does make sense as far as distancing them from the world of whitelighters and Elders and eventual half whitelighter and witch children. I could see Leo's role becoming less in the show, or at least having less to do directly with the sisters, leaving the focus more on the girls. However, that means that Cole is still around. I wonder how the original events of late season 4 would play out with Prue's history of suspicion regarding him and Paige's natural inclination to not trust him.

Honestly, my way of doing this is have Cole be the reason Phoebe survives - he dies instead. Problem solved. Although then again, I think that Prue would see right through either the Source possessing Cole or the Source powers influencing Cole, whichever it was. For the first, I see her helping Phoebe unpossess Cole or in the second, her talking Phoebe into coming up with a potion or a spell that would free him from that influence. If neither of these worked and it was closer to the canon one and he kept stalking Phoebe, she'd talk Phoebe into vanquishing him. As for Leo, he'd either give up his wings in sorrow (and maybe eventually end up with Paige...a much better match for him and a much better mother for Wyatt and Chris - I don't think Wyatt would turn evil with Leo and Paige as his parents) or continue to guide Piper's sisters until he becomes an Elder. Yup, would definitely prefer no Piper!

This is hard. Because I love Phoebe, but if she died in Season 3 she would stay the sister I always loved. But Piper dying would have the upper hand of not having Wyatt and Chris, and the story turning into all about her.
I voted Piper, but only if Cole exits the story too. I never felt Phoebe was the same once she meets Cole. It's hard for me to admit that her character was never the same again. What happened to the show, why did the writing get to a point I couldn't even recognize the sisters anymore.

This is hard. Its not Charmed without Piper. And Alyssa is too good an actress to kill off her character. Wow. Idk

I agree that without Piper is the best possible sister to die and introduce Paige. It also clears so much of the stories, and it would be a clean slate. Since neither Prue or Phoebe were planning to marry and have kids anytime soon, so we wouldn't see any Wyatt or Chris. Es makes very good points. I still don't think I'd like what they'd do with Prue. Which might mean I'd hate her.

Piper.
I think Prue was pretty vital in hindsight and I honestly believe she would've kept Phoebe grounded in a way Piper never could. Also it'd be a way to build on Prue and Phoebe's relationship, overcoming their differences again to protect Paige.
I don't think Prue would've had the anger towards Paige that Piper had. I think she would have hated herself for Piper's death and Paige could have helped her through that since she felt a similar kind of guilt with the parents.
Also with Shannen still on the show, I just don't see them making Phoebe into a super famous celebrity.

My heart breaks thinking about the sweet Piper from season 1 dying so soon, but I have to admit that the vision of what the show could have been without her instead of without Prue is really intriguing. I like what you said about Prue and Phoebe coming together to protect Paige. It would give them a chance to be equals. It no longer matters about their past or that Prue is older, because they're now both on the same level. They've been witches for the same amount of time, and Paige is completely new. I can visualize a great scene between season 4 Prue and Phoebe in the Manor, having a conversation about how they need to keep Paige safe. If Leo isn't around as much and, as Es said, if Cole died saving Phoebe in the underworld, it would truly feel like just the two of them. And you're right that Prue wouldn't be angry at Paige. I think she'd see Paige as an innocent. Maybe not a sister for a while, but definitely someone to protect and bring into their family. And her guilt over Piper's death fits perfectly with Paige's guilt over her parents. Perhaps Phoebe could share in that experience as well in that she feels guilty if Cole really did die to save her. And I also highly doubt that Phoebe would become some ridiculous celebrity.

I actually agree I think it would be in Prue's nature to look out for Phoebe, actually more so because Piper is dead. I feel Piper's death would bring them closer together. That had such a great chemistry and bond in S1-3, that it will take time to adjust to life without Piper and I'm sure they will butt heads just as much as when Piper was alive. I do think Prue would take time to warm up to Paige. Best of all with this trio, Prue will continue to be the leader and older sister, and Phoebe will stay the baby, and Paige will be the outsider/only child. You don't get the forced oldest/middle and baby switches if Prue is alive. I have to agree that if Shannen stayed, Prue would advance in her photography, and Phoebe wouldn't in her job. I actually wonder if after Cole, if Phoebe would be the one to quit her job and focus on magic and not Paige?

I love Phoebe, but I feel that if Piper died if would actually prove to be better for the series moving forward. But it wouldn't fix all the problems the show faced. I just think that if it were Phoebe, Paige would be much too isolated and ignored because she truly would be seen as replacing Phoebe, and we already know what happened when Prue died.
So Piper just feels like the better choice, even if this means Prue would turn into the Power of One. At least Leo may continue to guide Piper's sisters until he becomes an Elder and leaves the series for good. Actually, that may have been a better way to write him off, if Piper has died.

Phoebe focusing on magic by doing temporary jobs and Paige continuing to do what she did best - social working where she could find more innocents for the Charmed Ones to protect and Prue with her photography. Love the sounds of all of that so much more than what we got stuck with.

I'd like to see Prue advance in her career as a photographer, and I would absolutely love to see Paige stay a social worker and progress in that field. If one sister doesn't work or has odd jobs here and there, it should be Phoebe. She was always the one who was the least traditional, and magic was her true passion. I think Prue and Paige would readily agree to be the ones to focus more on their careers and making money if Phoebe focused more on magic, and they all balanced each other out that way.

That would have been wonderful. If S5 was like this, it would go back to how it was in S1 and S2. After such a dark couple of seasons, it did make sense for S5 to be lighter, regardless which sister had died. I actually disagree that S5 was that bad, okay It wasn't my all-time favorite, but I do see why they went lighter after S4. I'd like to see Prue advance in her career as a photographer, and I would absolutely love to see Paige stay a social worker and progress in that field. Me too Es. I really hope they don't, but the fact that two of the sisters are much younger than Piper and Phoebe might help and the fact they are both in college will hopefully mean nobody wants to be settled. But it won't stop the oldest sister from doing that, but hopefully, it won't happen until much later down the road.
