I can't believe that tomorrow, November 14th, it will be THREE FULL MONTHS since Granny Charmed wanted to know what our idea of a reboot would be. That's what inspired this alternate-universe series that's been giving so many of us so much joy, especially as we try to forget the reboot that stole all of Charmed’s thunder on its 20th anniversary, and debuted last month.
I was trying to post an update every time our main brainstorming thread reaches a new page (NOW AT THIRTY-EIGHT PAGES!), but because I’ve gotten into a very busy time of the year at work (I work at a wholesale florist, so the holidays are VERY busy for us – from September through December, a slight break at the beginning of January, then VERY busy for Valentine’s Day, another slight break until Easter and then EXTREMELY busy for Mother’s Day and my Golden Gopher baseball team), so thinking about it, I decided to post an update in a separate thread each time we reach the 13th of each month, so members can enjoy the update on the actual "monthday" (as we call it), the 14th of each month
As always each “monthday”, as we call it, I'm also going to post a summary to show just how far we've come and how far we have left to go before we reach our goal of 4 1/2 seasons for 100 episodes.
Of course right now we’re still the most proud of the fact that we’ve completed our first season! We still hope to finish our second one by Christmas or earlier, but we all know that this is a busy time for a lot of people.
I’ve also decided to skip the backstory so that if this is your first time reading about Elemental Charmed, it will be like you’re actually watching our show, not knowing what’s going to happen until it does. If this is the case for you, be sure to let us know what you think!
EDIT: Please note that like last “monthday”, this update includes press releases that are still being discussed and may end up being done differently. You can tell which episodes those are by the asterisk after the title.
Here we go!

"Simply Charmed Again"
Reboot From Original Creator Gets CW Pilot Orders
For a second consecutive year, The CW has handed out its first two pilot orders to a high-profile reboot of a long-running series from CBS TV Studios.
This time the network has greenlighted a new Charmed from the show's original creator, Constance M. Burge. The project will reunite Burge with three of her fellow writing staff: Sheryl. J Anderson and the popular team of Chris Levinson and Zach Estrin. Also joining the project is Paul Ruditis, known for his work on the popular Charmed comic series and author of several Charmed novels. Burge will act as executive producer while the others will write all of the episodes.
The CW originally tried to bring back Charmed, one of the signature dramas of predecessor The WB, last season, when it ordered a reimagining of the classic Aaron Spelling series from the same creative auspices. It was to be set in 1976 and feature a new trio of witches. The project was rolled over to this development season.
The new Charmed script, penned by Anderson and Ruditis and based on a story by Burge, is set in present time. Per The CW, whose brass greenlighted the pilot shortly after getting the script, “this new dark, dramatic Charmed reboot" of the classic series centers on five women, not three, and unlike the classic series, this new take will be incorporating the five elements (Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit).

The CW Picks Up Elemental Charmed Pilot To Series
The CW has made its new series orders. The network has ordered two reboots, including the new fantasy drama Elemental Charmed, from Constance M. Burge, the original series creator of the classic series Charmed back in 1998 for the upcoming 2018–2019 season.
Penned by Sheryl J. Anderson and Paul Ruditis and created by Burge, the Charmed reboot pilot centers around centers on five women, not three, and unlike the original classic series, this new take will be incorporating the five elements (Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit).
The show will star TBC1, TBC2, TBC3, TBC4, and TBC5.
Giving new meaning to “third time’s a charm,” this reboot has been attempted twice before — first for CBS in 2013, then again for The CW in 2017. That second attempt was to be set in the 1970s, centered around three women of no blood relation, an idea that was eventually tweaked to become the pilot that earned this series order.
The classic Charmed series ran for eight seasons (1998–2006) on The WB and starred the likes of Holly Marie Combs (Pretty Little Liars), Alyssa Milano (Mistresses), Rose McGowan (Citizen Rose) and Shannen Doherty (Beverly Hills, 90210).
Details of the new series are below:
ELEMENTAL CHARMED
Logline: Two sisters in Salem, MA, who discover that they, along with their grandmother, mother, and aunt, are a family of witches who discover that between protecting those innocent of the knowledge of magic from the denizens of evil magic while maintaining familial bonds, a witch’s work is never done.
Writing Staff: Sheryl J. Anderson, Paul Ruditis, Chris Levinson, Zach Estrin.
Executive Producer: Constance M. Burge

”Elemental Charmed‘s” EP and Stars On Staying True To The Original and What’s To Come In Season One – Comic Con
The executive producer and cast of Elemental Charmed, The CW’s dark, dramatic Charmed reboot, took the stage on Day 1 of San Diego Comic-Con following a screening of the pilot episode, written by Sheryl J. Anderson and Paul Ruditis and based on a story by executive producer, Connie Burge. Present today were starring cast members TBC1, TBC2, TBC3, TBC4 and TBC5, along with Burge.
This new version is set in modern times in Salem, MA and follows two sisters who discover that they, along with their grandmother, mother, and aunt, are a family of witches who discover that between protecting those innocent of the knowledge of magic from the denizens of evil magic while maintaining familial bonds, a witch’s work is never done.
“The original was so much about female empowerment and sisterhood and strong women, and I feel like that’s what we need again right now. The writers agreed with me, and Sheryl and Paul did a fantastic job turning my story into a script. Fortunately The CW liked it, too,” said Burge about rebooting the 1998-2006 series she created.
The first episode wasted no time in expanding the concepts of different background experiences and ages, with each of the Warrens coming from a different generation, while featuring a few nods to the WB Network original Charmed series.
"We want to be like Charmed that lets our viewers check into our series, enter our fantasy world and allow all the troubles in the real world to go away for an hour each week." Burge revealed about what they hope the viewers will take away from the new series. "We believe that will allow our series to still be relevant and fun to watch 20 years from now, just like Charmed."
Burge assured that the series will stay true to its predecessor.
“So many people have told me that they loved the original,” she said. ”We thought a new series would be a great way to thank all of the fans who have remained so loyal throughout the years. Originally we wanted to just redo the series, but so many fans will only think of Shannen Doherty playing Prue Halliwell or Holly Marie Combs playing Piper Halliwell or Alyssa Milano playing Phoebe Halliwell along with all the rest, that we decided to change it to this. Thanks to these changes, although it's still deeply rooted in the original, this series will not just be rooted in sisterhood like the original, but also motherhood and family ties of women sticking together, juggling everyday life while also relying on each other to navigate the world we live in today."
Expressing the same sentiments, TBC2 said, “Since Connie created the original, of course we can’t help but be very respectful of the original, which TBC1, TBC3 and I all loved when we were young, but what Connie and the writers really wanted to do was allow other viewers who watched the classic series to be able to watch it with their own daughters and children now, and everyone can relate to one of these women at whatever stage of life they are in. It's a real family show rooted in fantasy.“
As to what’s in store for the Warren family, this season will focus on the bonds between these women and navigating mother-daughter, grandmother-grandchildren, niece-aunty and sister-sister relationships “Piper and Phoebe learning about their powers and gaining more control of their powers,” teased Burge. “The juggling of everyday problems, their jobs or schoolwork for Phoebe with the latest warlock or supernatural attack.”

Everything You Need To Know About The Charmed Reboot Elemental Charmed
In our exclusive interview with Executive Producer Connie Burge, we dig deep and reveal five secrets from the Elemental Charmed.
Charmed is one of television’s most iconic series led by female stars, and it is the love for the series that prompted The CW to give it a reboot and specifically ask the original creator, Constance M. Burge, to take on the task of rebooting the series that was originally based on her and her sisters, hence why sisterhood was always so important to the series.
Charmed is returning in the fall of 2018, but it isn’t the same Power of Three that fans remember, and while some are adamantly against a reboot, saying that it's much too soon, others are open to it. The new Charmed aims to bring the same female empowerment and entertainment to audiences now as the Charmed did during its eight-season run from 1998-2006 starring Shannen Doherty (seasons 1-3), Holly Marie Combs (seasons 1-8), Alyssa Milano (seasons 1-8), and Rose McGowan (seasons 4-8), but with a modern twist. Ahead of the new Charmed, here is everything you need to know about Elemental Charmed:
5. The Premise
In early 2018, after what seemed like years of rumors about the show coming back, The CW finally announced it had ordered a pilot for a Charmed reboot, specifically asking the original creator of the series to write the story and choose the writers. The logline from the network for the series reads: "Set in Salem, MA, and follows two sisters who discover that they, along with their grandmother, mother, and aunt, are a family of witches who discover that between protecting those innocent of the knowledge of magic from the denizens of evil magic while maintaining familial bonds and outside jobs, a witch’s work is never done.” Rather than Halliwell, their family name is Warren, honoring Charmed's Melinda Warren, the first Warren to be born in America. But unlike Charmed, these Warren women really have kept their maiden name...
4. Their Powers
Rather than a Power of Three, we have a unit of five based around the five elements, Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Spirit. Each Warren will be able to tap into her own element, which will allow her to do things that the non-magical and other witches cannot. Their symbol isn't the triquetra but the pentagram.
3. Differences
There are several other distinct changes between the classic and the reboot. While the classic series was based in San Francisco, the new series is set in Salem so it can bring up the infamous witch trials. Also with two sets of sisters - one of one set the mother of the other set - the series will focus on not just sisters, but all types of relationship with mother-daughters, grandmother-grandchildren, and niece-aunt. Although the names will sound familiar: Prudence (never Prue!), Patience (never Patty!), Paige, Piper and Phoebe (never Phoebs), their last name is Warren and Prudence is the matriarch while Patience and Paige are her daughters and Piper and Phoebe are Patience's daughters. They're also each from a different generation: Prudence is 70; Patience is 50; Paige is 40; Piper is 30 and Phoebe is 20. This is quite different from most The CW projects and The CW is very curious to see how it all works out.
2. The Trailer
After announcing the reboot in early 2018, no one expected the series to be ready for the Fall 2018 TV season. But The CW went full steam ahead into development, and on May 17, 2018 the first trailer was released. Warren Manor is noticeably similar to Halliwell Manor, with some slight differences, including an obvious attic and painted grey rather than pink. It first gives us a glimpse of the lives of the three older Warrens before Patience's daughters' father is killed in San Francisco where the younger set lives, leading to the younger set discovering their own powers and their family's destiny as the Elemental Witches.
The trailer not only introduced the new Elemental Witches but also revealed that their own family book of shadows (not The Book of Shadows) still plays a major part, along with the matriarch's premonitions. Also back are warlocks, which will play a much larger part in this new take – in this series, witches who kill non-magicals (not mortals, since the Warrens and warlocks are also mortals) become warlocks and warlocks who save an innocent become witches - and in this series, innocents are non-magicals who are innocent of the existence of magic - and protecting innocents from all sorts of other supernatural evils, including the Demonesses of...
Yes, unlike the classic series, this one is truly female-centric.
1. Premiere Date
Following the release of the official trailer, everyone wanted to know when the series would finally hit the air, and The CW made an interesting decision. Elemental Charmed will premiere on Sunday, October 14, 2018, capitalizing off the theme of witches and the supernatural with the fall/Halloween season. Sunday night can be a dangerous choice for a new series, but the network slotted the premiere at 9 p.m. which is prime time, and also placed it after the hit series 'Superwoman', making Sunday nights the ultimate girl-power nights on the network.

Charmed stars offer their support to "Elemental Charmed'"
Rose McGowan, the actress who played half-sister Paige after the departure of Shannen Doherty in the Charmed series, has given the go-ahead to the reboot. The actress has posted a message on Twitter: "I wish everyone the best. I have no problem with the reboot. Fly, women, fly."
McGowan revealed "Hearing that Constance Burge is going to be the executive producer, I feel the reboot is in good hands. I never got to work with her - never even met her - but after all, she created the original story. So I have full faith in her for taking care of her baby. I'm so excited that Charmed fans can identify with the older stars while a new generation can get attached to the two younger stars and grow up with good role models for the world we live in today."
"But," she added, "I also fully supported Holly Marie Combs about the feelings and honor of Charmed."
Indeed, Holly Marie Combs (who played Piper Halliwell in the Charmed series) has since changed her tune when she was informed that the series is now in the capable hands of Constance Burge. "I got worked up because Charmed has a special place in my heart, but then I found out that Connie and Sheryl and Paul and Chris and Zach are behind this project, and the reboot is much different than the ones that CBS tried to foist on fans earlier. This concept is very good - taking what we did with a show about three sisters who happen to be witches and making it about three generations of a family who happen to be witches. Then again, I've been known to get worked up over anything. (laughs) So I wish them well, and I truly mean that."
"I’m just glad that it’s here finally because we’ve been hearing about this reboot for however many years, what has it been, maybe four years now?” Alyssa Milano who played Phoebe Halliwell in the Charmed series) mentioned in an interview. “And I feel like it’s either going to succeed or not, and if it succeeds again, a whole new generation will be exposed to the beauty of what Charmed was able to be for people, and if it doesn’t succeed, then we don’t have to hear about it anymore.”
Shannen Doherty (who played Prue Halliwell in the Charmed series) revealed at an event in Santa Monica for "Stand Up to Cancer" her thoughts on the reboot: “I think it's great. I think it's awesome, especially because Connie’s in charge and there’s no signs of Brad Kern.” Kern was the showrunner on Charmed and has since been fired from CBS-TV for sexual harassment, something he was known to do during Charmed and has been blamed by fans for Doherty’s early depature.
Doherty also had nothing but praise for Burge.“I think second lives are amazing, so I'm all for it… I'm happy to see that Charmed is back in Connie's hands, that back then the show was all about strong women who supported and loved each other, and now it's coming back again in this day and age. Connie was so great the first time around, and I'm sure she'll be just as great the second time. It's about female empowerment again -- not that that's something new. Charmed originally was that too. I find the Elemental Charmed story from what I hear to be very interesting, and I especially like the take of making it about family and not just sisters. It added an interesting element that I think will allow it to stand on its own. I'm so excited for Connie and her team and wish them all the best."
Milano added: "I’ve always admired Connie for the story she crafted back in 1998, and what led me to get the best job I ever had. I'm excited to see what she has installed for us this time around."
Elemental Charmed will premiere Sunday, October 14 on The CW.

Charmed Reboot Elemental Charmed Hits New York Comic Con and also teases the Charmeds‘ 20-year-anniversary special
EXCLUSIVE: Attendees at this year’s New York Comic Con are going to feel seriously Charmed with an early look at The CW reboot from Charmeds’ creator Connie Burge.
The new version of the late 1990s supernatural sibling WB series is set to debut on October 14th, but I’ve learned that NYCC fans will get to see the first full episode of Elemental Charmed, a week beforehand.
Already having previewed at San Diego Comic-Con in July, the slightly-redone Sheryl J. Anderson and Paul Ruditis penned opener that’s screening at the Hammerstein Ballroom on October 7 at 1:30 PM ET has some added significance at NYCC, at least in terms of timing. The preview coincides with the 20th anniversary of Charmed, which first hit the air on October 7, 1998. Also scheduled is a panel with on-screen Warren family members TBC1, TBC2, TBC3, TBC4, and TBC5.
TBC1 who portrays Prudence, the matriarch of the family, has said, ”My first Comic-Con ever I was really nervous. But I'm glad that I have the support of my cast members. I never dreamed that at my age, I'd be a star at these events."
TBC5, who portrays Phoebe, the youngest Warren, was a little more star-struck being in the same room as other well-known names. "I've gone to these events as a fan, and now I'm being greeted by fans. It's so surreal."
Connie Burge has also teased that the upcoming tribute to the classic series set to air on October 7th is going to be wonderful, as in full of wonder. "Sheryl, Chris, Zack (note: the writers of the series who were also writers for Charmed.) and I all sat down and we each contributed some to it. But I'm so excited for fans to be able to see the real star power trio together who are the anchors for the hour-long tribute. We’re also happy that fans will get to see pieces of a few of the episode in HD for the first time."
"I haven’t seen them myself, but I've heard the remasters have come out very nicely,” Burge added, sounding very impressed that fans will get a chance to honor their original work that inspired the new series in true magical style.
Also like SDCC, the core cast of Elemental Charmed will be on hand at the screening as well as an autograph session at the sprawling Javits Center later that last day of NYCC 2018 at 3 PM ET.

Classic Charmed’s 'The Complete First Season's Blu-ray release to be celebrated with a two-day promotional launch!
As The CW mounts a reboot of the long-running fantasy dramedy Charmed with the dark fantasy drama, Elemental Charmed, CBS Home Entertainment is releasing the original series on Blu-ray for the first time.
The trailer above gives a breakdown of how the quality changed from the standard-definition releases that have been available in the past to the HD release coming soon.
Charmed aired for eight seasons on The WB starting in 1998, and starred Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano as sisters who happened to be witches.
With a brand-new remastered Blu-ray for the cult Charmed, a series reboot, and another high-profile rebooted witch series (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) all coming up soon, it seems there has never been a better time, strategically speaking, to make Charmed available again. 2018 really is the Season of the Witch!
The first season of the Charmed series will be having its HD release, appropriately enough, the day before Halloween on October 30.
And to celebrate the launch, fans in LA will be treated to a two-day promotional event on October 29th and 30th.
For the first time since the last episode of Charmed was filmed, the stars who played three sisters who happened to be witches - Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano - will be appearing onstage together. Despite past problems, all three got along well during the filming of the 20th anniversary special that will but that was in-studio filmed.
Brian Krause, Ted King, Dorian Gregory, Jennifer Rhodes, Finola Hughes, Tyler Layton, Neil Roberts, Leigh-Allyn Baker and Carlos Gomez will be among the other guests appearing at a yet-to-be disclosed location in LA for a launch party to help celebrate the release, with a special signing each day and a press event the day of the release.
Others might have attended, but since the celebration and launch party will only honor the cast and crew involved in the first season, only those were invited. This is especially true of fan favorites Rose McGowan, Julian McMahon and Drew Fuller, but all have shown full support for the upcoming Elemental Charmed series on their social media pages, with all three hoping for a chance to appear on the series.
CBS-TV decided on a two day events because some of the guests could only make it for a single day due to previous commitments. The actual schedule be released later, but CBS-TV assured fans that the three stars will be part of both days' events.
"Charmed: the Complete First Season" will be released as a 5-disc set in Blu-Ray on October 30th, 2018.

Charmed Reboot Pilot Review: Elemental Charmed series is off to a magical, exciting start.
Critics have gained access to the first two episodes of the new Charmed reboot, and have offered their thoughts on Elemental Charmed.
Over a decade after the classic series aired its finale, Charmed returns to The CW on October 14 with a new take on the beloved fantasy drama. Instead of focusing on three sisters who have the Power of Three, this time it focuses on a two sisters, their mother, their aunt and their grandmother, while incorporating the natural elements: Air, Earth, Fire, Water and Spirit.
Constance M. Burge, who created Charmed has developed the new version. In this new take, the main thing that it has going for it is the common bonds of family spread out between all five women. Rather than focusing on three sisters who happen to be witches, it focuses on five family members who happen to be witches, navigating different family dynamics, jobs, saving innocents and protecting the world from supernatural threats.
The chemistry between Piper and Phoebe, Patience and Paige, Prudence and her daughters is very strong, and they all play off each other nicely, creating a believable family, parent and sisterly bond. This isn’t quite as true for Patience and her daughters, but that just makes it more realistic when we find that while Prudence and her daughters, Patience and Paige, living the life of modern witches in Salem, MA, the series begins with the youngest members of the family, Piper and Phoebe, living a somewhat ordinary life in San Francisco, CA, where they were raised by their father, Victor Bennett. But back in Salem, their grandmother Prudence has a premonition that kick-starts all the drama and sets the stage for Piper and Phoebe to accept their destiny as two of the Elemental Witches.
What was met with praise by the critics was the way the backstory let the viewer believe the reason why these two sisters who have powers were raised by their non-magical father rather than their magical relatives, although the critics were all certain that some pieces of the backstory were left unexplained, obviously for later in the series to deal with.
What was also met with praise was how easily the names so familiar to Charmed fans fit these new witches, even if they aren’t played by the original actors and are playing different roles. But their personalities are so similar to their Charmed counterparts that this as an alternate universe with different rules just made sense.
The whole first episode focuses on Piper and Phoebe understanding their destiny and embracing it. The second episode, which was also gained early access by critics, is more an adjustment period as the older Warrens settle Piper and Phoebe into their new home in Warren Manor in small-town Salem after growing up in big-city San Francisco.
What was also very different than Charmed but made the experience interesting is the fact that there was no traces of any potential love interests during the first two episodes. Truly, this should allow the viewers to get to know our five stars better, which will help viewers figure out if this show is for them, and if these characters are worth the following week to week.
Elemental Charmed is a series that is off to a very exciting start while still just fun to watch. The performances are uniformly solid, the story is interesting and by being totally female-centric with the exception of two dead husbands and one male warlock who is vanquished in the first episode, but seems to have a bigger role in the family, a true focus on female empowerment. Most fans (and critics) agree that it took Charmed a few weeks to find its footing. We plan on hanging around for a few more weeks and get a sense for whether its reboot does the same or stumbles.
Grade: 4.5/5

Elemental Charmed Review: CW Reboot Casts A Spell On Both Older and Newer Generations
SPOILER ALERT: This article contains details about the pilot episode of Elemental Charmed.
In 1998, The WB released Charmed, a fantastically witchy fantasy series where three sisters discover they have powers of the occult — but the good kind. Fast-forward 20 years later and The WB is now The CW and the sisters – now a matriarch, her two daughters and her two granddaughters - are back in a reboot that is in the center of a Venn diagram between 1998 and 2018. It feels fresh enough to appeal to the millennial generation, while also feeling like something out of the late 90’s which should appeal to Charmed fans. Seems appropriate since late ’90s nostalgia is circling back on the trend cycle with so many reboots, especially on The CW and its parent network, CBS-TV.
Elemental Charmed, The CW’s reboot of Charmed, debuts on Oct. 14. It will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of its predecessor with an exclusive sneak peek of its pilot during New York Comic-Con on Oct. 8, which happens to be one day after the original premiered in 1998. Charmed fans attending the con will be able to celebrate the actual anniversary with both a special that offers a retrospective look at the show's legacy, along with a rebroadcasting of Charmed’s pilot episode, the first time a Charmed episode will be broadcasted in HD.
Constance M. Burge, who created Charmed, created this new version. Rather than focusing on just three sisters who happen to be witches, this one centers around five family members who happen to be witches. What also makes it different than its predecessor is the absence of male co-stars—in the Year of the Woman, the opening credits only show the actresses who play the five Warrens: TBC1, known for her role in TBD, who plays matriarch Prudence Warren; TBC2, known for her role in TBD, who plays her older daughter, Patience Warren; TBC3, known for her role in TBD, who plays her younger daughter, Paige Warren, and newcomers TBC4, who plays Patience’s older daughter, Piper Warren, and TBC5 who plays Patience’s younger daughter, Phoebe Warren. Yes, Charmed fans, the names sound familiar, as do the personalities—a nod to Charmed--but all five are playing totally different roles.
The series begins with a shot of Warren Manor, which looks much like Halliwell Manor except it’s grey rather than pink and has a noticeable attic, then we go inside to be introduced to Prudence, Patience and Paige, who we discover are witches with powers as they discuss mixing potions, writing spells and saving innocents—humans who have no knowledge of the reality of magic. This appears to be just an ordinary day for these three witches when suddenly has a premonition through her Spirit Element: a warlock (guest star TBD) attacking her granddaughters, leading to the opening credits, followed by aerial views first of Salem and then San Francisco as the guest credits roll.
Then we see Piper coming home from running her restaurant at the same time that Phoebe comes back from taking a college exam. They are greeted at the front door by their father, Victor (guest star TBD). Through their discussion, we discover that Victor has no powers (yes, Charmed fans, that sounds familiar…) while the girls have no idea that they do.
Suddenly the warlock appears and kills Victor just before Prudence, Patience and Paige appear, courtesy of Paige using her Air Element to transport them to California. After dispatching the warlock, Patience first comforts her terrified daughters and then explains to them something they never knew: they come from a long line of witches, and if the two younger ones accept their own powers and destiny, the five of them will become the Elemental Witches, a set of witches who by controlling the elements can protect those innocent of the existence of magic from evil magic by vanquishing warlocks and all sorts of supernatural threats. That’s a lot of responsibility — not to mention crazy for two young women who only this morning did not know that witches existed. That said, the pilot focuses on the two sisters learning to accept their destiny, and it isn't an easy ride.
During all of this, we can easily see the close relationship between Patience and Paige, between Piper and Phoebe, even between Prudence and her daughters, due to the chemistry between the actresses, but not so much between Patience and her daughters, but given the backstory, that makes sense.
During the rest of this first chapter of this reboot, Piper and Phoebe try to forget what their mother told them as they help their family prepare their father’s wake and funeral, even as the younger set of sisters consider moving to Salem and leaving their lives in San Francisco behind them.
The episode concludes with the funeral service for Victor. The service is crowded with mourners, obviously Victor was well-known and well loved. We find that Andrea Halliwell (recurring guest star TBC6), Prudence's dead husband’s twin sister and Patience's favorite aunt, has made the trip. It was nice to see the characters receiving some comfort from loved ones and friends.
What surprises us is that there are no men with their arms around one of the Warrens. We realize that we’ve yet to see any sign of a love interest outside Allen, Patience’s dead husband who’s Andrea’s twin brother, and Victor, who has just died. No, in this series, the focus will always be on the five Warren women, not their men.
We watch the long, slow drive to the Californian cemetery and the service at the gravesite, as we see flashbacks of Patience’s life with Victor in Salem, the decision for them to pretend to divorce so that after binding the girls’ powers and erasing memories of them from 10-year-old Piper’s memory (baby Phoebe is too young to have any), Victor moves them across country.
After everyone leaves the cemetery, Piper and Phoebe are watching as their father’s coffin is lowered into its grave. After a moment of tearful silence, they inform Patience, Paige and Prudence that they are ready to accept their powers and the decision to relocate back to Salem.
The first episode ends a couple of days after the funeral service, with Piper and Phoebe standing outside Warren Manor with their mother, suitcases in hand. Prudence opens the front door and she and Paige come outside, arms spread, saying welcome. Both Piper and Phoebe step into their arms and then Patience embraces all of them.
We kept waiting for the five of them to step aside and wondering which Warren will use her power to close the door, but suddenly we found ourselves up in the Warren attic, looking at a close-up of the Warren family book of shadows (not The Book of Shadows…) and the Pentagram lights up. This means that unlike Charmed, Elemental Charmed won’t begin and end each season with the typical Manor door closing. It was a welcomed surprise.
Elemental Charmed brings back a familiar feeling of fantasy-driven television — the same feeling you felt when you watched the lineup on The CW back when it was called The WB. It felt very much of the 90s popular hits. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, it just keeps the general bullet points of the original series, but making enough changes so it doesn't feel like a complete rip-off, had it just focused on three sisters again. Also leaving out any signs of love interests, allowed us to really get to know what is important to the series...the relationship of the five main characters: not just sister/sister but mother/daughter, grandmother/granddaughter, aunt/niece. Female empowerment is back with a twist, and it seems relevant more now than ever.

'Elemental Charmed' airs Sundays at 8 pm on The CW

6 Things to Know About The CW’s New Elemental Charmed Series
At New York Comic Con 2018, Deadline moderated the panel for the new Elemental Charmed series and we can confidently say that this show will make you want to call your mom, sister, aunt or grandmother. The first episode of the new series will run on The CW Sunday, Oct 14th, just in time for witchy Halloween vibes and a solid boost of female fun to take us into November. Below, six things to know before tuning in.
It’s a show rooted in family, embracing three generations, the Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millennials.
Although The CW originally wanted a new series about three sisters with three different fathers who discover they are witches and that would be all about female empowerment and taking down the patriarchy and simply called Charmed, this idea angered so many from classic Charmed fans (whom the network would hope would embrace the idea) that The CW trashed that idea and instead turned to Constance M. Burge, who created the classic version, to come up with a new concept. Originally she wanted to do a prequel of the original Halliwell sisters story, but again fans insisted that it was much too soon for a series like that. Instead Burge came up with a different family with similar names but a different set-up - a Baby Boomer matriarch, her two Generation X daughters and her two Millennial granddaughters.
Rather than taking on the issues of the day, which would've quickly dated the series, Burge used the same ideas that made Charmed a classic - a fantasy series that allows viewers to sit back and forget the outside world for an hour, but this time they get to watch how the different generations reacts to and solves a problem. The show’s five lead actors TBC1 who plays matriarch Prudence, TBC2 who plays her older daughter Patience, TBC3, who plays her younger daughter, Paige, TBC4 who plays Patience's older daughter Piper, and TBC5 who plays Patience's younger daughter, Phoebe, described this element of the series as “fascinating.”
TBC1 talked about how important it is to her that the series has a “point of view and a voice for her generation, the Baby Boomers," adding that "typically my generation rarely appear in a fantasy drama and usually doesn't have much of a role, and either end up dead or already are dead, like Charmed's Grams and Patty. (she laughs). It's nice to play someone who's alive and can truly be he leader of the family, even if her power isn't used to fight the villains."
TBC3 added, "And my generation, the Generation Xers who grew up watching Charmed, haven't been forgotten either. Both TBC2 and I are hoping that by representing them, that it will allow more than just the typical Millennials who usually watch shows on The CW and by including TBC4 and TBC5, will encourage them to watch with their children or grandchildren."
TBC2 described the show’s "consciousness” as being one of the chief things that drew her to the series. "You have all the different generation groups having a voice. Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials - even Generation Z. They remind me of me watching Charmed. It was a show about young women, but as a young teenager, I wanted to grow up to be just like them. That's what we're hoping for with this. It truly is a show for any female, and is the perfect way to bring together fans who watched Charmed when it was first aired, those who found it through the reruns, and those who have never heard of Charmed, but want to watch a show about a family of strong women who happen to be witches.”
It might not be a series for everyone.
Because there are no male stars, this series may not be for viewers who want a lot of romance in their shows. Although there might be some later on, as of the second episode, there is no traces of any potential love interests. So far the only male warlock (we've yet to see a demon...) we've seen was killed in the first episode. There seems to be something more to him, but it's definitely not something that will lead to romance.
Instead, the ideal audience, according to TBC5, is all females, especially high-school girls and college girls who can watch it with their mothers who were fans of Charmed, and if her grandmother wants to watch with them, too, all the better. The hope is that it’s a show moms and daughters can enjoy together, something to get them all up in those good family feelings without all of the complications a romantic relationship can add to a family.
The CW has never done a series that doesn't begin with love interests and the network is very curious to see how it is received.
This is a dark, gritty kind of reboot.
Elemental Charmed's pilot makes clear that it will be dealing with the intense emotional territory. It’s a show about family, about emotions and friendship and rivalry and grief. Unlike some fantasy series that doesn't take the fantasy aspect seriously, this one does because the actors do with their reactions truly making viewers wonder if all five Warrens will survive the episode. That’s part of the cross-generational appeal — the goal is for the show to be one you want to watch with your mom, not one that’s going to make you feel uncomfortable while also concentrating on typical problems any family faces in daily life, with the action taking place at a crime scene (Patience works as a forensic photographer), Salem Social Services (Paige is a full social worker), Piper's restaurant (she does all the cooking), or Phoebe's college (she's a freshman who works on the school paper) as Warren Manor.
There are lots of warlocks and a little sprinkle of other supernatural threats
And they’re tough to act with! TBC2, TBC3, TBC4 and TBC5 all described this as one of the most challenging aspects of the production because so many of the big, tense scenes involve magic and special effects that are added afterward. They described the action sequences as “a choreography,” something that also requires trust. It’s also something they’re still working out the kinks on. TBC4, whose character Piper has control over the elemental power of fire, mentioned that they’ve tried playing scenes when she first finds out that she can control fire different ways, and they’re still trying to figure out the best system for how to use it.
TBC3 added, "Controlling my Element power of Air is so much fun. When it's time to go home, I often imagine teleporting myself home from the set - it would save so much time!"
The main production team includes those who worked on the first few seasons of Charmed
As mentioned earlier, Constance M. Burge, who created Charmed is the executive producer of Elemental Charmed and she brought some of writers from the first three seasons of Charmed to Elemental Charmed:. Although Elemental Charmed will have a different vibe than the original, much of it will still feel familiar to Charmed viewers. The big change comes to the series not being just about three sisters who happen to be witches, but five family members who happen to be witches. It’s a mix of fantasy, drama and emotionally-intense stories that will find you sighing with relief as the ending credits run.
It will be a balance of warlock and supernatural threats of the week and ongoing mysteries.
According to its five lead actresses, the new series will replicate Charmed's tension between solving an ongoing mystery and introducing supernatural threats-of-the-week characters who need dispatching in each episode, in addition to innocents of the week - and in this case, innocents are those who are innocent of the reality of magic, so they're not all goody two-shoes. Hopefully, that will put the new series in a sweet spot of serial storytelling that’s becoming all-too-rare for TV, shows that play with both episodic structure and season-length mysteries. It’s more fun when there are demons (or in this reboot warlocks) around who need vanquishing.
The ongoing mystery regarding Paige and her long-dead daughter, is briefly touched on and TB3 adds with a smile, is something that will come back into play throughout the series.
