Great Aunt - Aunt- Niece Charmed

[rebooted]

Wondered whether this could be a fresh new way to bring back Charmed.

Relationship not so much on sisters but intergenerational and not maternal.

Aunty relationships are usually more fun and authoritative which would be a good dynamic

Practical Magic had a dynamic like this.

Doesn't necessarily have to be with one of the existing characters. 

It could be a whole new shoe. 

I guess if they did use existing Characters, it would be:

Piper as the Great Aunt, One of Phoebe's daughters as the Aunt (and niece to the Great Aunt) and One of Phoebe's other daughter children as the niece.

Otherwise if could be Prue as the Great Aunt, Pipers daughter (Melinda) as the Aunt and Niece to the great Aunt) and Chris or Wyatts child as the niece or nephew.


Or perhaps if it was Grandmother, Mother and Niece - that would be a great dynamic too. 

The best match for that would be Piper, Pipers child Melinda and one of Phoebe's kids.

Each having one of the powers would be great too.

Actually this sounds like what a group of us did for our own virtual reboot, "Elemental Charmed". Here's our cast:

THE MAIN CHARACTERS:

Prudence Warren: Aged 70. Much the same as the Grams we know and shake our head at, she's the strict, fiery matriarch of the Warren family. Prudence (never Prue) is very much like Prue Halliwell, initially strict but because she will have suffered fewer losses than the "real Grams" she becomes more mellow and softer. She has the Elemental power of Spirit which gives her premonitions. She was a doctor but is now retired, although now she uses her skills along with potions to heal her family’s injuries.

Patience Warren: Prudence's older daughter, aged 50. Pretty much the Patty we know and love, although even more kind and caring. Patience (never Patty) functions as the "balance" of the family as Piper was in the original series, but unlike Piper Halliwell, she is the most selfless person of all and always has time to help those in need, although that often gets her in trouble. Like Prue Halliwell, she's a photographer, but unlike Prue, she works with the Salem police. She has the Elemental power of Earth which allows her to throw anything.

Paige Warren: Prudence's younger daughter, aged 40. Again, she is basically the same as her namesake, except she is Patience's sister, not Piper and Phoebe's. She's sometimes irresponsible and impulsive and not always in touch with reality. Much in the same way Prue would lecture Phoebe at being irresponsible in the original series, Prudence would be the same with this "Paige". Like Paige Matthews, she's a social worker. Paige has the Elemental power of Air, which allows her to use the wind to move herself and anyone else to wherever she wants to go.

Piper Warren: Patience's older daughter, aged 30. Again much like Piper Halliwell, but rather than being shy, she's very fiery, like later-season Piper without constantly feeling sorry for herself (although she does miss her normal life..,), and because there are no whitelighters, she never falls for one. Like Piper Halliwell, she owns her own restaurant and is a very good cook, so she's the one who makes most of the potions. Piper has the Elemental power of Water which allows her to freeze molecules.

Phoebe Warren: Patience's younger daughter, aged 20. Also much like Phoebs Halliwell (and never like PhoeME Halliwell), but like her grandmother, mother, aunt and sister, the fact that she was born in Warren Manor has nothing to do with whether she can easily turn evil - all five have free will and can decide if they want to do good or evil. Phoebe is still in college and works on the school paper. She has always loved to write and is the one who comes up with most of the original spells. She has the Elemental power of Fire, which allows her to form and throw fireballs, but like Phoebe Warren herself, the power isn't evil.

Please note that the last name is Warren rather than Halliwell - and the women truly keep their maiden names. Rather than a Power of Three, they have a Power of Five with their symbol the pentagram, and their powers are based on the elements, so it's called Elemental Charmed, not stealing Classic Charmed's name. The way Classic Charmed was based on the bond between sisters, this one is also based on the bonds between grandmother-granddaughter, mother-daughter, aunt-niece.  Please not, no male costars so anyone who wants a lot of romance in their show won't like ours. That would actually work pretty well with the concept of the Triple Goddess from neopaganism. Excerpt from the Wikipedia article:

Cool concept using the Elements and making it about family and not sisters. Kinda reminds me of Witches of East End only adding a Grandmother to the mix.

A reboot like this would work more than CW's attempt with a Power of Three and sisters again.

I feel like I would want a male in the mix though - distancing it even more from Charmed.

Nope, no Uncle, no males, except for four:: Allen, Prudence's deceased husband; Victor, Patience's deceased husband and father of Piper and Phoebe; Sam, Paige's warlock (only demons are the Demonesses of) lover and father of her dead daughter, Peyton, and Matthew, Piper's non-magical boyfriend - just one significant other for each and none for Phoebe, preventing her from becoming PhoeME.. THAT'S what separates it MUCH more from canon - no males to take over the show like Cole, Leo, Wyatt and Chris did. But that's part of the reason why we have our series move to CBS for S2, since no love interests and The CW don't get along.

Granted we may have gone a little too far making it female-centric, but it was our way of sticking our tongue out at Kern who turned our show that was all about girl power into one that was male-centric, where a woman couldn't be happy unless she was married with three children.

For the fun of it, here's our backstory - what happened BEFORE our series starts:

Elemental Charmed

BACKSTORY:

Prudence Warren, a witch born from a long matriarchal line of witches who have always lived in Warren Manor in Salem, MA, always said everything happens for a reason, but nothing comes without a price…

She has known that she has the Elemental power of Spirit when she started having premonitions as a teenager. While studying to become a doctor, she married fellow witch, Allen Halliwell, and gave birth twice (with Allen agreeing to let their daughters carry the family name of Warren if any son carried his family name of Halliwell). When they grew older, Prudence discovered that her older daughter, Patience, had the Elemental power of Earth, while her younger daughter, Paige, had the Elemental power of Air. When Prudence's premonitions revealed that her two future granddaughters would have the other two Elemental powers of Water and Fire, she realized that her family was destined to become the powerful Elemental Witches. She began training her daughters in the Craft in order to prepare them for what would eventually happen to them and their own daughters, especially after a warlock murdered Allen.

While still a teenager, Paige fell in love with an older man, Sam Wilder. Although Prudence warned her against him so Paige eventually broke up with him, a couple months later she discovered she was pregnant. She gave birth to a daughter, Peyton. When Prudence, Patience, and Paige discovered that Peyton had the Elemental power of Fire, and when a couple years later Patience married non-magical Victor Bennett and had their daughter Piper, who had the Elemental power of Water, the Warren family was certain that those five would become the Elemental Witches with each of Prudence's daughters having one child, who were cousins.

This changed when Sam came back and began influencing his eight-year-old daughter. When Peyton used her firepower to kill a classmate who was teasing her, she became a warlock like her father. Under his influence, Peyton turned on her family and much as it hurt the family, especially Paige, they ended up having to vanquish Peyton, and they were sure all was lost.

But this changed five years later, when Piper was ten and Patience gave birth to Phoebe, who had the same Elemental power as Peyton - Fire. After Phoebe was born, Patience and her mother and sister decided to try to protect her daughters from what had happened to Peyton. The three older witches first bound Piper and Phoebe's powers ad then placed a cloaking spell on Victor and the girls before the three of them relocated to the other side of the country in San Francisco. This way the girls could be raised by their father and be protected while also having a normal childhood, something no other Warren witch had ever had.

In order to continue to protect them, Victor raised Piper and Phoebe so they didn't know that they were witches or destined to become one of the Elemental Witches – they were always just his little girls. They even use his last name, Bennett, as their own. They’ve visited their grandmother, mother (who they believed divorced their father but agreed to let him have custody so that she could live her own life as a forensic photographer for the Salem Police Department) during summer vacations and they always go back to Warren Manor for Christmas.

But as our series begins, Prudence has a premonition showing that Sam is back, killing Piper and Phoebe. Paige uses her Elemental power of Air to transport herself, her mother and her sister to her nieces. They're too late to prevent Sam from murdering Victor, but thanks to Prudence's premonition, Patience uses her Elemental power of Earth to throw Sam into a wall before he can harm her daughters. Then Prudence, Patience and Paige use a potion and a spell to vanquish Sam. Seeing the shock in her daughters’ eyes, Patience reveals that she, her mother and her sister are witches with elemental powers – and so are Piper and Phoebe. She lets them decide if they want her to unbind their powers. After seeing what happened to their father, that idea frightens the girls and they decide against this.

Piper and Phoebe try to forget what their mother told them as they help their family prepare their father’s wake and funeral, even as the younger set of sisters consider moving to Salem to be with their family. During the funeral, the whole Warren family remember and mourn Victor through numerous flashbacks.

But when Piper and Phoebe see how their powers can help people, they finally agree to embrace their destiny, and their powers are unbound. They agree to join their mother and aunt, who along with their grandmother who uses her premonitions and knowledge to guide her daughters and granddaughters. The five Warren women are now the Elemental Witches, setting out to protect those innocent of the knowledge of magic from the denizens of evil magic.

We worked on this for two years and had such, SUCH fun with it, especially because it was a group of us (we call ourselves Team Charmed Cafe and are now in the midst of re-watching Charmed together on Saturdays and Sundays, which we started during its 20th anniversary - we're now in S3 and will start S4 sometime in October.) brainstorming ideas and taking turns writing "press releases" about our episodes so we didn't have to write out full chapters or figure out how the Elemental Witches get out of their messes.

But of course if anyone wants to use our ideas, give them their own little twists with their own "canon", including males and whitelighters and halves (none of those two in ours, along with no kids coming back to the past - although ours do some time-traveling.), they most certainly could. I just know although I might read it, I wouldn't be interested in being part of this since this was so much more fun, especially when we could throw out Charmed's inconsistent "canon" (the main reason we started all over) and come up with our own.

So if you want yours to be a spin-off rather than a reboot - go for it!  I hope you have even HALF as much fun as we did!

You know, this opens an interesting line of thought. Maybe the reason there are so many spells that specifically require the Power of Three in the Book of Shadows is because it has existed before. I actively dislike the series finale for a lot of reasons, but it did canonically establish that the Power of Three can be established intergenerationally - being sisters is apparently not a requirement, just that there’s a close connection and (maybe) familial bond. Maybe there were other power trios in the past, and the Charmed Ones are just the first time it came about on its own, with no work required?

An exception might be That '70s Episode where a pregnant Patty joined little Prue and Piper, but that still supports the idea that it has to be sisters. 

As for the original topic of this thread, it could be interesting to have aunt-niece relationships, but I enjoyed it more when it was just sisters all of the same generation. It let them be more independent and didn't protect them as much, which made the show more interesting. Having a parental-type figure there would change the tone too much for me.

As usual, Elle Em, I agree with you totally. Also remember that it wasn't Patty who was part of "That 70s Episode"' Power of Three spell - it was Fetus Phoebe. Again, the finale was the only time they used an intergenerational trio to cast a Power of Three spell. I remember picking up a pillow from the couch and throwing it at the TV, I was so upset - just like when Grams wasn't upset when she found out that she had GRANDSONS and not granddaughters - and a GRANDSON was the Twice-Blessed Child. This was a Grams from the 70s/80s - no way she knew about any of that! There was SO much inconsistency in that episode - typical Kern! - all part of why I still think it's Piper's delusion as she dies after the Kill Billie Vol 2 explosion - what she'd WANT for her family, not what she actually got - since no way her powers should've let her live. Now Paige surviving via panic-orbing makes much sense to me, which is why I did that in my rewrite, "Charmed Forever".

As for the original topic, I don't think I'd mind an aunt/niece setup that much IF it was only one niece. But as soon as you have all three sisters, I prefer just them having to figure things out, especially when they're not teenagers. Otherwise whenever they had problems, they'd go running to auntie - almost as bad as always having Leo around knowing the answers - SO wish he had remained in S1 only where I think he belonged like I think Cole should've stayed in S3.

Of course, we had fun doing it differently for 'Elemental Charmed', but that was a totally different setup with a matriarch, two daughters and two granddaughters - no threes.
