S5 or S6?

Time to choose between S5 and S6. Which one do you like more?

S6 without question!

Even if I agree that S6 is "less sisterly" and "more about Chris" (which I don't, but let's pretend I do), S6 has WAY more enjoyable episodes than S5, for me.

Even if some (not all) of the S6 episodes are just "meh", for me, I'll STILL watch S6 > S5. I'll even be generous and throw in a bone to MORE S5 episodes, as I pick between the two.

I understand disliking the personalities of certain characters. IK a lot (not all) of this board can't stand S3 Phoebe (though, I'm in the minority in thinking her personality is fine, but I digress), yet S3 would probably still be picked over S5. Along with the love triangle (and Piper's personality, for me) nonsense in S2, which we all agree, yet S2 would be picked over S5.

I don't understand why ignoring Chris (which is where some, not all, of the S6 dislike comes from) can't be applied, either, for S6.

A lot of S5's episodes just doesn't compare, as my list already demonstrates.

Looks like one other person helped push it further, as well.

Like we said in the other thread, it's not the best season. It's no "Top 5". But, it's not the absolute worst season, where it's to be dead last. Objectively speaking, it's just wrong, I'm sorry :/

5x07 "Sympathy for the Demon"
5x12 "Centennial Charmed"
5x15 "The Day That Magic Died"
5x20 "Sense and Sense Ability"

Plus the Crone is one of my favorite demons that's ever been on the show.

I want to like S5E7 "Sympathy for the Demon" & S5E12 "Centennial Charmed", but I can't. Just wasteful episodes to be focusing on hating Cole, that I wish it gave more room for other storylines. We really only had like ONE episode in the S5E1 - S5E12 slot of the season, that wasn't anti-Cole. The whole "anti-Cole" arc REALLY drags the season down. This isn't just an episode or two, either. It's like HALF the season. And the other half is not that good, either.

Phoebe gets premonitions in those episodes, and I guess they're both "Protect/Save the Innocent(s)" type of episodes. And, OFC, BOTH Paige & Piper are using their abilities, as well.

When comparing the S6 episodes to S5's, I still don't see how S5 wins/outbeats S6, I just don't.

So, for me, I like the extra power in S6. Makes up for the lack of premonitions. I appreciate S5 remembering Phoebe wears glasses. But, to defend S6 on it's lack of glasses use, the Bay Mirror wasn't as prevalent, in this season than it was in S5. Which is the reason why Phoebe started wearing glasses, again. 'Cause S3-S4E15 "Marry-Go-Round", she didn't wear her glasses until the Bay Mirror in S4E16 "The Fifth Halliwheel". S6E8 "Sword & the City" is the last time we see Phoebe in glasses until S8E18 "The Torn Identity". Paige does say something interesting in S7E15 "Show Ghouls" while posing as Phoebe, for the Bay Mirror. She proclaims she "forgot her contacts". It's possible Phoebe wears contacts post S6E8 "Sword & the City" until S8E18 "The Torn Identity", but I digress.

All that being said, I prefer S6 over S5 merely because I'm choosing Strength over the glasses continuity because the Strength was first and was still remembered in S3-S4E15 "Marry-Go-Round" over the glasses. And, S6 has more episodes with her Strength than S5. S6 is (also) fairly even on the visual premonitions with S5. As in (at least) 1 episode containing a premonition. Levitation is the same.

That's my reasoning for choosing S6 > S5. I prefer Phoebe's Strength over her glasses especially because the Strength was first before the glasses.

I've finally figured out why our opinions are usually so different - again, just opinions - neither of us is right; neither of us is wrong - just different. You are REALLY interested in the powers, while I'm not. I'd prefer if they never got an extra power and just stuck with their original Warren one. I really couldn't care less how many times they use each one while you take up a lot of times figuring that out - that also seems to be how you figure which episodes/seasons you like or don't like, while that's the last thing I consider. I'm more interested in how they react with each other. It's why PhoeME; Poor, Poor Pitiful Piper; and Ditzy Valley Girl prevent me from enjoying S4-8 and why the last half of S1 and the first half of S2 will always be my favorite season. So it's probably best if we just ignore each others' post and concentrate on the ones who agree with us regarding how important powers are.

I have no issues with your posts. You have your opinions which I've learned from and have taken into consideration and contemplated about it, to see if I can see what you see, which I have.

I can understand your disdain towards S6, as it's not as "Protect/Save the Innocent(s)" friendly as other seasons. Though, I understand you're more about the sisterhood, than I am. I like the idea of "strong women" kicking butt, essentially. And, it's not so much I'm interested in the powers, per se BECAUSE old me REALLY liked those later seasons where their powers weren't really used as much as the older seasons especially Phoebe's. I just liked the episode stories. What's interesting me, RIGHT NOW is power balance between ALL THREE of the sisters and not just one sister or even two. As the point of the show is about ALL three of them, and they are witches, so I want to see their abilities being used rather than to be wasted.

I have understood where you're coming from, I just wish you can see where I'm coming from. Nothing wrong with seeing from a different perspective, and I understand your point, actually (more than you think) about their original powers staying in tact. Which is why S4 is gonna be the most balanced around that, as my data clearly shows, when mixing in their other powers. But, if you don't want extra powers involved, then S1 (maybe S3 'cause Prue hardly uses her AP, in this season. Same with Phoebe's Levitation & Piper's exploding power) is your go to season, and I've ALWAYS held S1 in high regard and even mentioned because it's the ONLY season, where ALL three sisters only have ONE power. Along with less tainted by those who are NOT Constance M. Burge, but I digress.

That being said, I like seeing through the lens of other perspectives. Just discussing with folks who only share my view doesn't challenge me nor makes me learn, and I like to learn. As we can see, I've changed my mind about S5, even though S5 has the worst stories, it remembered to balance out the powers, in the S5-S8 bracket. I'd rather learn and grow and not remain stuck in the same 'ol opinions, all the time LOL

Doing the Ranking the Seasons: Season 5 & Ranking the Seasons: Season 6 threads, really opened up my eyes on how BOTH of these seasons really lack.

I will give S5 credit for having more "Protect/Save the Innocent(s)" type of episodes than S6, in a manner that's more recognizable. Lemme show you:

I don't think many would count S6's 1., 2., 3., 6. nor 11. as "Protect/Save the Innocent(s)" type of episodes. Only reason I mention them is 'cause S1E2 "I've Got You Under My Skin" & S2E16 "Murphy's Luck" have similar "Protect/Save the Innocent(s)" lacking in extreme background stories of our innocent(s). Only thing both these S1-S2 episodes have in common is that ALL THREE sisters were tackling the same villain (not necessarily the same innocents). Compared to something like S6E2, S6E3 & S6E4, those episodes are JUST Paige dealing with those situations without her sisters. S6 was the start (besides S5E4 "Siren Song" & S5E9 "Sam I am", back in S5) to Paige becoming more Whitelighter than Witch, when we see her becoming more and more of a Solo act in S7-S8 (but mostly S8). Parts of S7 re-does the S6 experiment with Paige helping out in the elevator in S7E18 "Little Box of Horrors" & Mitchell in S7E19 "Freaky Phoebe", but I digress.

In which case, BOTH seasons lack in Power Balance (including Phoebe's Marital Arts), for these "Protect/Save the Innocent(s)" type of episodes. Lemme show you:

Season Five
1. S5E6 "The Eyes Have it" - Though, Piper fails to have her exploding power successfully hit Odin's son, and the episode then switches over to potion exploding...
2. S5E10 "Y Tu Mummy Tambien" - Though, Phoebe failed her on her Strength.
3. S5E14 "Sand Francisco Dreamin'"
4. S5E17 "Lucky Charmed" - Though, Phoebe's premonitions are NON-VISUAL

Season Six
1. S6E2 "Valhalley of the Dolls, Pt 2" - Though, Piper only use her freezing ability, as a Valkyrie.
2. S6E3 "Forget Me...Not"
3. S6E4 "The Power of Three Blondes" - Though, the Charmed Ones only used their abilities during the time their identities were stolen prior to their abilities.
4. S6E5 "Love's a Witch"
5. S6E8 "Sword & the City"
6. S6E9 "Little Monsters"
7. S6E17 "Hyde School Reunion" - Really hard to catch Phoebe's Empathy, here, so it's easy to miss. It quickly glosses over as she senses hate from her fellow classmates. This is the MOST controlled her Empathy power seems to be.

Though, S6 seems to have more of a Power Balance (including Phoebe's Marital Arts), again, quite a few fans may not consider S6 1., 2. 3. & 5. as acceptable forms of "Protect/Save the Innocent(s)" type of episodes. Which would put BOTH S5 & S6 as even with S5 failing more on the Charmed Ones powers than S6.

Where S5 shines in comparison to S6 is the utilizing of ORIGINAL WARREN Powers/Abilities. Along with more obvious "Protect/Save the Innocent(s)" type of episodes.

Where S6 shines in comparison to S5 is better episode stories. You can't tell me that S5E14 "Sand Francisco Dreamin'" nor S5E17 "Lucky Charmed" are better constructed storylines than the likes of S6E5 "Love's a Witch" and/or S6E9 "Little Monsters". The ONLY good episode S5 has is S5E6 "The Eyes Have it" which didn't really utilize Paige nor Piper, too well, but I digress.

With that being said, I gotta put my vote for S6 for better constructed storylines. STORY ALWAYS outbeats EVERYTHING. Even if I really wished S6 utilized original Warren powers and/or "Protect/Save the Innocent(s)" type of episodes better.

EDIT: Not to mention, A LOT of the S5 innocent(s) died via Thereza, Lydia, Sandman, Seamus, etc. Whereas, not too many of the S6 innocents really died all that much, in comparison to S5.

Well, I guess according to the grades watchers gave both S5 & S6, S5 (technically) outbeats S6 by 0.09:

The back end of S6 killed S6 in the averages. By mid season 6, S6 was actually beating S5 easily when I was doing the data. Just the slog finish really put a damper on S6 allowing S5 to overtake it in the end.

While, I do understand that, still S5E19 "Nymphs Just Wanna Have Fun" being ranked really high especially over the likes of S6E10 "Chris-Crossed" & S6E18 "Spin City" is disheartening to see. I bet if that episode got a lower grade, S6 would surpass. I'm just in disbelief that S5E19 "Nymphs Just Wanna Have Fun" is graded higher than S6E10 "Chris-Crossed" & S6E18 "Spin City". Both S6E10 "Chris-Crossed" & S6E18 "Spin City" are just miles better of episodes than S5E19 "Nymphs Just Wanna Have Fun". S5E19 "Nymphs Just Wanna Have Fun" didn't even have Phoebe use her abilities/powers, at all. She threw a potion, that's about it. Potions were attempted in both S6E10 "Chris-Crossed" & S6E18 "Spin City", but no potion was ever used to successfully vanquish anything in these episodes. S6E18 "Spin City" only (successfully) used an antidote. And, both S6E10 "Chris-Crossed" & S6E18 "Spin City" ALL THREE sisters used their powers & abilities. The only thing I can think of is that S5E19 "Nymphs Just Wanna Have Fun" is more of a "Protect/Save the Innocent(s)" type of episode and neither S6E10 "Chris-Crossed" nor S6E18 "Spin City" are. Except maybe S6E18 "Spin City"'s sub-plot with Paige and the wicked witch terrorizing the magical creatures, but I digress.
