I got to thinking about (S4E22 "Witch Way, Now?") Selina, and how she was unaware that she is a "witch". She didn't display any magical powers, but could being a "practicing" witch actually be a "power", at all? In S2E13 "Animal Pragmatism", Phoebe's classmates attempting to say a spell, but it didn't work. Is it possible that they don't possess "practicing" witch capabilities? Though, (S4E8 "Black as Cole") Emma & (S6E9 "Little Monsters") Derek both were able to "learn" being a "practicing" witch but perhaps it was in them, all along? Just some food for thought...

It's an interesting question. Are you a witch just based on magical powers, because in some witch lore in other books, movies and shows, you can be a witch by practicing and learning, even if you were not born with powers or such.
I mean Astral Projection is a power that can be taught, but in those cases they were witches. So it's so much to consider.
Like so many have zero powers but practice spells and learn to make potions but we call them witch practitioners simply because they have no magical powers.
Back to your question, I do see "practicing" witch actually possibly being a "power". I mean it could come down to a passive ability right.
What a great new topic you have brought to the boards attention. Nice to see something new than the usual discussions around how much I hate this sister or this character or this season for a change.

I mean Astral Projection is a power that can be taught, but in those cases they were witches. So it's so much to consider. Right which makes Ms. Donovan an interesting case because she didn't display having any active powers, in S7E8 "Charmed Noir". But then is APing in S7E14 "Carpe Demon" and expressed how Mrs. Winterbourne "taught her"... Like so many have zero powers but practice spells and learn to make potions but we call them witch practitioners simply because they have no magical powers. Back to your question, I do see "practicing" witch actually possibly being a "power". I mean it could come down to a passive ability right.
Right because I thought about Phoebe and how her "magical" powers were stripped from her, in S6E19 "Crimes & Witch Demeanors", BUT she was still able to brew potions (S6E20 "A Wrong Day's Journey Into Right" - the one that turned Mr. Right human) and even chant PO3 spells (S6E22 "It's a Bad, Bad, Bad, Bad World, Pt 1" - Opening up the portal to the mirrored, but evil, world). I (also) thought about the unnamed witch, in S3E11 "Blinded by the Whitelighter" (that Eames tortured to lure a whitelighter to heal), and how she didn't display any "magical" powers, but Eames says the line "it's not your powers I'm after". Can Warlocks (or bad witches) "steal" a "practicing" witch's "power" of spell chanting? Especially in regards to Phoebe, since SHE is part of "the PO3" power (if you will), is that capable of "being stolen"? I guess, in a way, according to how S8E13 "Repo Manor" displayed it LOL IDK so many questions! xD What a great new topic you have brought to the boards attention. Nice to see something new than the usual discussions around how much I hate this sister or this character or this season for a change.
Heh, thanks. But, as you can see, it's mostly thought rambles that I just wanted to share xD I think too much :X

Wanted to reply to this before I log off post re-watch! Very good point about her. Maybe she wasn't a witch either. Maybe some things can be learned and taught. It does make you think. I mean its completely possible. Like so many have zero powers but practice spells and learn to make potions but we call them witch practitioners simply because they have no magical powers. Back to your question, I do see "practicing" witch actually possibly being a "power". I mean it could come down to a passive ability right.

Especially in regards to Phoebe, since SHE is part of "the PO3" power (if you will), is that capable of "being stolen"? I guess, in a way, according to how S8E13 "Repo Manor" displayed it LOL That's right, she was able to still brew potions and say spells. So magical powers can be stripped but spells can still be cast even PO3 spells. So the Po3 isn't defined by their magical abilities. But then there's the other side, Prue dies, they don't have access to the PO3 but can still use their powers and cast spells. LOL more questions. That's a good question. She has no powers. Maybe they can steal "steal" a "practicing" witch's "power" of spell chanting. That made me think of Jana from S3E20 "Exit Strategy" a warlock can steal Jana's "practicing" witch's "power" or knowledge of making potions. I know its a bit out there, but now it's got me thinking about warlocks stealing more than JUST powers. I mean the Warlocks (The Collectors) in "They're Everywhere" wanted to steal knowledge, so I guess it does track. Maybe it can be more than just magical abilities. Now onto S8E13 "Repo Manor", I guess the PO3" power could be stolen. It isn't out of the question. I mean if the Three Dirty Blondes can steal the powers of the Charmed Ones and trick the book, its not out of the question, based on you pointing out how S8E13 "Repo Manor" displayed it. IDK so many questions! xD It sure is. So much to think about. What a great new topic you have brought to the boards attention. That's okay to think too much and share them here. LOL but we've taken this further with even more questions than answers, but maybe it'll start some more discussions.

What a cool thread! Selina was unaware of being a witch. I guess she COULD have been unaware of her possible gifts like Paige, but I don't know. She didn't display any magical powers; she would've known if they were not bound. A "practicing" witch could be a power. I mean spelling chanting is still doing something without having magical powers. Aaeiyn and summerreading. Your discussions brought up a great point about Phoebe, she lost her powers but still could cast spells, etc. but could they steal that even if she has no powers? summerreading. Yeah, the collectors were after knowledge. They were an off-set bread of Warlocks like the Dragon Warlock. And if S2E13 "Animal Pragmatism" taught us that normal people can't say spells and it won't work, but practitioners can. It leads me to think some witches just don't display any powers. But then again, Gale stated she had no powers and just played around with it. And S7 showed us that Astral Projection can be taught. Maybe you can study and learn skills and "practicing" witch capabilities are possible. I'm now thinking that "practicing" witch may be a power after all. Spell chanting being a basic witch power. It's still a power, if we take the show making it clear that some humans can't say spells and they won't work, but a "practicing" witch can. I have no clue if Phoebe's classmates could study hard and eventually they'll work. Maybe there are just witches born with zero powers, but are still witches who can cast spells. Aaeiyn. You've open up a can of worms I'm really liking.

If Practising Witches can cast spells without any active powers then I do consider it an actual power. And if non magical like the college friends of Phoebe can't cast spells then I do think the evidence can support it.

Very interesting discussion. I'm busy this morning and also can't make the re-watch. So I'll have to come back to this another day. But did skim some of the comments so far. Good theories.

This question brings the show Supernatural to mind for me.
In that series hunters could cast spells if they had the right ingredients for incantations and said the spell correctly if it was in Latin for instance as evidenced multiple times by Sam and Dean and they were not witches.
Of course that show and Charmed were two different things but then as I've mentioned before continuity in Charmed was changed constantly like with ghosts and witches powers being in their blood and non magic people going mad etc so who's to say later on a non magical person might've actually worked a spell had the plotline deemed it if Charmed surpassed season 8 then.

That's true. Shows that use magic and witches the lore where the witches are not the starring show and characters it appears magic and spells is much more a skill that can be practiced or learned sometimes. I do find it interesting how spell casting is something that doesn't need to be done by a witch. But as pointed out here it does make me think practicing witches MAY well be a power. If Phoebe's college friends can't cast the spell. Then I say there's evidence that practicing/Witch practitioners are witches in some regard and not truly non magicals or just people playing around with magic. They just display basic powers by spell casting. If not everyone can cast a successful spell then those that can could fall into a category of being a true witch perhaps in some regard like Marcy, Gale etc. Just ones without any active powers.

Wanted to bring what I said, in the S7E13 "Charmageddon" re-watch thread over here because: 1. It's relevant 2. I think most (not all) missed it, in S7E13 "Charmageddon": So, Zankou can't make the potion? Interesting.

We've seen practicing witches make potions but upper level demons can't. That's food for thought in this debate.

Well, I remembr Source Cole brewing up a potion, in his hotel room, in S4E15 "Marry-Go-Round", before Leo, Victor & Darryl showed up to have a bachelor party. And, the Seer making the special brew for the chocolates in S4E16 "The Fifth Halliwheel". And, that one demon (I'm assuming) who made the Empath blocking potion, for Chris, in S6E5 "Love's a Witch". So, maybe certain demons can while others can't? IDK LOL

I (also) want to mention, it was Leo (and not Darryl) who made the Grimlock vanquishing potion, in S3E4 "All Halliwell's Eve". All Darryl did was hand Leo the thyme and was even unsure when handing it over LOL

Maybe it required the PO3 to make, not that Zankou couldn't make it himself. I don't know. It's weird.

I thought about that because S6E18 "Spin City" implied that only the Charmed Ones could make the Spider-Demon vanquishing potion despite not actually using it, but I digress. But then I thought about how the potion already existed, pre-the Charmed Ones, so. Unless, we want to suggest that even potions (like spells) is more powerful with more than one witch behind it? Wonder if it required their blood, like the S6E18 "Spin City" Spider-Demon vanquishing potion, and that's how it becomes "more powerful"? IDK just making this up as I go xD

My husband brought up a good point. In S3E8 "Sleuthing with the Enemy" they chanted a spell for the Belthazor vanquishing potion, so perhaps that's what Zankou meant lol

I was thinking about this for awhile, but Julian brought it up regarding Paige. OFC, I brought up the Charmed Ones, in general. Is it possible, that maybe (S4E22 "Witch Way, Now?") Selina DOES have a magical power, that she doesn't know about? And, that, the reason why Phoebe's classmates (in S2E13 "Animal Pragmatism") didn't get the magic to work was because of what Phoebe said via the words being formatted, incorrectly...

Interesting question. There's a good chance she does and doesn't know. I know some lore in film/shows says magic/powers doesn't show until a certain age, but that isn't always the case. Some can really not have any clue and still be an adult. I digress. Powers have been shown to activate or display themselves with some witches or magicals when they're in a scared or vulnerable situation with demons or other magical beings. Back to your second point, that answered the question on why it didn't work. Obviously using that book wouldn't make it work cause the words were incorrect to say a real spell. Any other examples like Selina of possible witches who may have magical powers but just don't know. I can't think of any off the top of my head right now.

In a way, Hope from the S7E18 "Little Box of Horrors" re-watch, we just did. And, possibly, Kyle from S2E6 "That Old Black Magic", but he's only able to channel magic from the wand, itself. Versus, Hope able to use some form of magic without Pandora's Box. Only ones I can think of, right now.
