Charmed Sketch: Piper/Holly

Well here it is. Hope it looks like her even a little. Took about 45-50min to sketch.

it's a great sketch, though...and please don't be offended! it doesn't really look like holly, at least from the nose down. her mouth and chin look a little too delicate...but it is a beautiful sketch!

First off, your drawing is very good, especially for as little time as you spent on it! You really captured Holly's eyes very well, and you have a lot of talent!

longlivechris' observation was a good one, however; the drawing 'misses' on the nose, mouth, and jaw...but these are all fixable, and I'd like to offer a few suggestions, which might help, on your next sketch (if you don't mind me tinkering, a bit!)



Not having the photo you worked from to work with, I found a 'Holly' photo in a similar pose, as a reference...



Holly is a bit tricky, to draw; she has a long jaw, but a fairly square chin, and a somewhat wider face than the sketch. The nose is shorter (although you got the base, with her nostrils, dead-on!), the mouth longer, and a bit wider. She also has dark, pronounced eyebrows, which help bring out those beautiful eyes you drew!

If you would consider revising the few things that I suggested, the result might be similar to this:



As you can see, your drawing is pretty recognizable!

There is a tendency, when drawing, to start on a 'favorite' feature (like the eyes, or hair), then to 'build' the rest of the face around them. I'm not going to say that's wrong (I do the same thing!), but if you approach a drawing that way, you need to 'step back', and get away from it, every few minutes. This will keep your 'vision' fresh, and help you to look at it more objectively when you return to the drawing. I have a feeling that you'd have caught everything I mentioned, if you did this, and the end result would have looked like the last sketch!

it's okay if it doesn't look like Holly to some, but it is to others I suppose. Yeah I usally start with the eyes and go to everything else around them first. I personally don't like to draw the outline of the head first. It just isn't my style of drawing.

And LongLiveChris, I completely agree with you. It might have looked like Holly to me before but not now. It is totally off to me. And Cariart your suggestions are great! I'm learning every day on how my artwork would improve. To me now that I'm a little wiser to faces I tend to draw the head a little longer than usual and tend to make to nose futher down, and a lot more slim than the real thing.

lol but I don't think I'll edit my picture. I don't edit unless i really feel like I need to. I've saved drawings from around 5 years old and kept at least one drawing from each year. So that Holly one will be my reference to what my protrait drawings were like when I was 15 And this helps me to see my mistakes.

yeah.. i think cariart has been drawing since before I was born and he's got some awesome drawings.. but triad, yours is good too. Just the bottom portion is a little weird but I can't draw for crap so I shouldn't be talking.
