Two Beds and A Coffee Machine
Authors Note: This story is completely A/U. I own nothing. No Copy right infringement intended on either Charmed or the song Two beds and a Coffee Machine by Savage Garden.
History: Piper stayed in San Francisco after her Grams died. All three of her sisters went out East. Phoebe and Paige settled in New York while Prue went to Boston. Piper was a chef until she married Leo and then become the typical housewife. All jobs remain the same as in Charmed. No offense is meant towards Leo normally I love the couple but I have had this story stuck in my head for awhile and can’t get it out until its all down!
“Come on Wy we gotta go home baby.” Piper said calmly as she picked her four year old son off the waiting room floor in the doctor’s office. Leo would be getting home from work shortly and she knew she would get it for having dinner late even though it was because their youngest child, Trinity’s, 3 month check up. Her two year old son, Chris, was at the babysitters for the afternoon with a cold. She hadn’t want to drag him around and maybe make him sicker.
Baby carrier in one hand and Wyatt firmly held against her opposite hip Piper made her way to her SUV one of the few things she could actually say was hers. It had been Prue’s before Prue moved to Boston to continue her career with 415 magazine.
“Mommy what are we having for dinner?” Wyatt asked as Piper finished buckling in Trinity’s car seat.
“Mm, how about chicken fingers and smileys?” she smiled at his eager blue eyes, the spitting image of his father but without the temper. Wyatt was always soft spoken yet opinionated even at his young age. She had named his favourite meal and he was visibly pleased. (A/N smiley’s are those French fries in the shape of smiley faces!)
“Yummy!” He grinned as his baby sister gurgled as if she could understand every word of the conversation and agreed wholeheartedly. Wyatt took one of her tiny hands in his and started talking to her.
Piper hardly heard a word he said as she broke the speed limit making her way to Sheila’s house to pick up Chris.
“Wyatt, I want you to wait in the car I will only be a minute k?” Piper said as she parked in front of the large manor on Prescott street that was Sheila’s house. She quickly raced up the steps and knocked on the door.
“Hey Piper how was the appointment?” Sheila asked waving the dishevelled, petite brunette into the foyer.
“Trin is still small for her age but she’s growing.” Piper’s eyes lit up with motherly joy. She loved her children with every fibre in her being and it showed in everything she did.
“That’s good” Sheila commented as she picked Chris off the couch where he had been sleeping and put him in his mothers grateful arms.
“Thanks again Sheila I owe you one” Piper said as she left the large house holding tightly to her brown haired, chocolate eyed little boy.
She buckled him in the last carseat in the car and headed towards their modest home silently praying Leo would be late. As she pulled into the driveway she breathed a sigh of relief as the other side of the driveway was still empty.
By now Chris was awake and fussing, still stuffed up and grouchy while the other two seemed quite content. Wyatt undid his seat belt and climbed out himself taking off to the front door and shouting triumphantly “I beat you mommy! I got to the door first!”
Piper laughed as she carried the other two to the door then stood drowsy Chris at her side. She fumbled with the keys and finally opened the door. They weren’t poor by any means , Leo was a doctor at San Francisco Memorial in the plastic surgery area. They had a nice home and three beautiful children but that wasn’t enough for Leo everything Piper did made him angrier, more likely to lash out.
Piper ushered the boys into the living room and headed to the kitchen cooing to Trinity the entire way.
After putting Trinity in the baby rocker Piper started on her husband’s dinner, steak and baked potato with corn. The usual. When that was cooking she began the chicken fingers and fries for herself and the boys. Trinity still being breast fed got a bottle that she had pumped earlier.
Piper timed getting Leo’s plate of food on the table perfectly with his arrival. She was taking plates to Wyatt and Chris in the living room when he burst through the door. She instantly knew he was drunk and hurried to his side.
“Hey honey how was your day?” She asked putting on her fake smile. She could smell the booze on his breath and it made her feel sick as she kissed him hello.
“You know how my day went I tell you every single day and yet you find it necessary to inquire EVERY damn day!” Leo said loudly.
He stalked off to the kitchen and Piper joined the kids in the living room to watch Land Before Time. When the boys finished eating she took their dishes to the kitchen then started to put them to bed. Chris was last as he had fallen asleep and looked so peaceful she hated to disturb him.
By now Leo had moved into the living room and was sitting watching the news. Chris appeared to have been almost shoved into the corner of the couch to make room for his father and Piper quickly picked him up.
As she lifted him she accidently hit the remote turning the TV off. ‘Crap’ she instantly thought.
“You stupid. .” Leo trailed off as he hit her. She kept her grip firm on her still sleeping baby as she moved backwards. She put him on the chair in the corner hoping to keep him out of harms way as she backed in the opposite direction. “You can’t do anything right we don’t even eat as a family. You need to be taught some lessons” Leo shouted as he threw out his arms at his wife. He knocked a lamp off the end table and the ceramic and glass shattered as it hit the tiled floor.
Piper jumped and pleaded “Please Leo not tonight, all the kids are asleep you don’t want to wake them.” Normally just reminding him of the kids made him stop but tonight he kept at it. He hit her again. He continued until Piper shut herself off from him in the bathroom. She sat and waited and prayed until the cursing had died down and then slowly opened the door.
He was asleep, still in his suit, sprawled across their bed. Hurriedly Piper threw some clothing into a duffle, enough to last awhile. She also grabbed a jewellery box out of her bedside table. One of the few things she herself had left from her mother who at died when Piper was still very young. She had quietly been putting money away since Wyatt was born, ‘in case of an emergency’.
Piper moved to her daughter’s room tossing the infants clothes into another bag and piled it at the door along with diapers, bottles and as many snacks as she could find. Next were the boys. She tried her hardest to stop the tears that trailed down her cheeks over her newly bruised jaw but couldn’t.
She packed some of their favourite toys and ensured she had Wyatt’s Wuvey and Chris’ elephant Ellie. After moving all the luggage out to her SUV she made sure her cell phone was charged and placed Trinity in her carrier, one by one she carried each of her little angels in the car. She grabbed Chris last, still curled up in the living room. Seeing him almost broke her heart. She didn’t know where she was going she just knew she had to leave. Leo had almost hurt Chris and she would never let that happen.
Wyatt woke about 3 blocks from the house muttering groggily “Mommy what are we doing?”
“We are going on a trip baby.” Piper said giving him a smile as she gently brushed the tears off her cheeks “Go back to sleep we won’t be there for a long while”
“OK mommy” He said accepting her explanation simply because she was his mother. Piper breathed another sigh of relief as he nodded off again. She turned the radio on so it was playing softly. A CD of music one of her sisters had made each of the others years ago.
Piper drove from hours on end, foot to the floor watching as exits passed her on the interstate. Near dawn she pulled off the interstate into Lost Hills. She parked in the Motel 6 parking lot and reaching into the backseat grabbed her purse.
Able to see the vehicle she locked the doors and headed into the lobby. “Do you have anything available?” She asked trying to keep herself from yawning.
“Would a room with 2 doubles be ok?” The perky woman at the desk asked.
“Perfect” Piper said plunking down her money on the counter and grabbing the key cards from the woman. She headed back to her vehicle and quietly woke Wyatt up.
“Honey grab Wuvey and Ellie and follow mommy ok?” She said as she picked up the duffle with some clothes , Chris and Trinity’s carseat.
She led her little boy up the steps to their motel room and with some juggling managed to open up the door. She laid a now awake and grouchy Trinity on the bed and shut the door behind her. Wyatt jumped onto the far bed grinning at the adventure they had embarked on without his original knowledge.
“Mommy where are we going?” He asked again more insistent for a proper answer this time. More awake and not so easily subdued.
“I thought we may go see Aunty Prue or Aunty Paige.” Piper said as she changed Trinity’s diaper and started feeding her a bottle. Piper flipped on the TV and put it on quietly to an early morning cartoon channel and joined her sons on the one bed. Chris had still not awoken mostly due to the cold medicine Piper had given him with dinner.
“Really and Aunty Phoebe?” Wyatt asked growing more excited.
Piper nodded chuckling at his enthusiasm. She finished feeding her tiny daughter and placed her down on one bed surrounded by pillows. She kissed her soft brown locks and moved back to her sons.
“Wy I am going to try to get a little bit of sleep ok? Just watch cartoons. We will go have breakfast when I wake up”
Wyatt nodded and watched as his mother settled down on the bed. Quietly he went over and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Just above her bruised jaw. Piper heard him murmur “There all better” as she started drifting off. It was then she was reminded why she wasn’t stopping and never turning back. Her children were innocent and she would do all she could to preserve that innocence as long as possible.
