Just wanted to see the general thought on Piper gaining this power and just have some discussion on it. How it was misused (by the writers) and how it shouldve been written. Do you think she can blow up her sisters, can she blow up innocents/regular mortals?
To me, I was/am fine with Piper gaining the power since it was total opposite of who she was and it was hilarous seeing her trying to gain control of it.
During season3 it was mostly used ok but as everyone knows that later on she could just blow up anything and everything which just made it to powerful/desructive.
To me, the way they should have handled the power was, while she could blow up very lowerlevel demons, vanquishing them, on any other demon it would just send them flying or just disrupt their particles (like it did The Source) and they would reform within seconds. On some demons she would be able to possibly blow up specific body parts but she would have to be really concentrated on it,

I agree with most of what you said CharmedFaith. I do enjoy this power, but I feel the writers used it just so they can get rid of demons without much thought.  Basically made them lazy. A piece of dialouge between Leo and Piper suggest that Piper's powers were given to her by the Elders. What do you all of think of that? |

I think that was such a bad line to use. But I just interpret it as the power being there as a natural progression for Piper but the Elders just pulling the plug on it before it was really ready to be released by Piper herself. Or just Leo telling Piper that to try and make her feel better about it.

First things first.
Piper's power is to either make molecules freeze or make molecules move faster so that the item explodes.
She does NOT combust molecules. That would mean burning them and we never see fire. That would be closer to what Past Life Phoebe had in "Pardon My Past" or what Christy had, definitely not what Piper had.
It's why I hate those fancy names.
As most members here know, I also hate that power. I truly got a kick out of it when she first got it, when she blew up the watermelon, but I've learned to hate it because it made her too powerful - the true SuperWitch of the movie. Unlike the other sisters, she no longer needed her sisters to get rid of even minor demons; she could do it herself.
I've learned to accept the fact that freezing time actually means freezing molecules, since honestly, time couldn't freeze for just one part of that item. But allowing Piper to manipulate molecules rather than just freezing them made her too powerful and allowed the writers to be lazy.
I would've preferred both molecular combustion *and* molecular manipulation be saved for The Source or Zankou to make them more powerful and a much better adversary for the sisters.

Phoebe could stab a lower-level, and Paige could orb a knife at it or something, and it would still be vanquished. I am pretty sure Piper wpuldn't be the only one doing the @$$ kicking. They could but never did. Why waste all that energy when Piper just has to flick her hands? It's why they had to keep coming up with bigger and badder Big Bads because Piper could take care of the less powerful but just as scarey (see S2...) ones herself. |

Good point. But seeing how dumb the later season demons / writers were (Zankou being one of the exceptions to the rule), I can pretty much guarantee that they never even would've considered outsmarting. That would've required using their minds -- and we know that the Kern-era demons were not the brightest crayons in the box.  |

I could see this happening with two big "if's" -- the first being if she was overconfident / complacent in her abilities (which I think did actually happen as time went on). And the second being if the latter season demons were, as you say, smart enough to outwit the girls.

ROFL, I think you might be right, although tonight you and GR are my Royal Jesters - I haven't laughed this often and this hard while reading Charmed posts in a long time! Can we come up with a plotline in the future about Phoebe's 3 daughters who somehow have to battle the Evil Charmed Ones when they surround Piper so she can't use her explosion power? |
