When I first started watching Charmed, I enjoyed every minute of it. It was fresh and new, and I wished I had a TV in the bathroom so I could enjoy it with a lavish hot bubble bath with an assortment of candles adding to the glow.
I didn't critique it...looking for mistakes magical, legal or other-wise. When the episode was finished it left me feeling warm and fuzzy like I had just stepped out of the tub. I couldn't wait until next week.
Oh sure, there were many things that were absurd and unbelievable...but this was magic...something I wanted in my life, and could get once a week for an hour. After that is was back to the real world where I could not freeze, move or get an early insight into my next major problem.
My lack of enthusiasm did not arrive due to silly story lines, too many demons and fairytale critters, or the writers lack of continuity...NO, it was the departure of Prue that made it seem empty to me.
Just speaking for myself...I didn't realize what a major force and a source of strength she was until she was out of the picture. I admit that I didn't notice at first, how much the others had changed with her departure...only that she wasn't there and it all seemed to unravel at the seams. So I only watched hit and miss and know little about what most of you know so well.
I didn't begin exploring Charmed sites until after the show was long off the air. This is the only one I have dealt with for so long. Members here have dwindled even during my short time here but most that have remained are knowledge and spirited and speak their mind far better than I can. Maybe that is what keeps me interested....but, I have lost something in the translation, that I am only just discovering.
I own all but the last season. I have only just started to watch them. I am now in the second installment and I find myself having trouble staying connected. I am, in short, turning into a monster or demon, if you prefer!!
I am now looking at everything that is wrong with the show. I see mistakes everywhere. In fact, even if I don't spot one, I find myself creating one. This would include the first three seasons that I thought were the mainstay of the entire run.
I am picking out every bit of nonsense like a surgeon looking for cancer cells. Things are falling apart...the center is not holding, like the girls I have lost the magic...am I all alone here???
You know, all of a sudden I think I get them...because I am them. I have indeed lost the my way on this Magical Mystery Tour. Your Truly....Sammy

I loved and I love Charmed because I loved and love the sisters all four the sisters- I always though I'ld never bear a big sister like prue even if I like her- I love the idea of magic in our world as when I was a child I believed in the protecting fairies of my valley I see the mistakes but I don't care I still love most episodes and feel the magic of these stories In eight years they have grown they shifted from the enthusiasm of their twenty's to the life more complex of their thirty's a life where you have to have a job a house and if you have a family, time for them and I like also this change Try to watch Charmed for what it is, a nice series about the love of sisters, affectionate and generous women because they lost a sister a mother friends and fiances because of magic and they never give up Normal people -except for extraordinary people- would not have this tenacity

Yup. Much as I don't agree that losing Prue is what caused all of the changes in the characters - after all, Piper and Phoebe were the ones we loved during S5 thanks to the birth of Wyatt; they only changed for the worst in S6 thanks to Chris having Leo turn them into goddesses, then Piper became cold and selfish (goddess of the hearth) and Phoebe turned into Freebie/PhoeME (love goddess)- that's the way I feel about the first three seasons and most of the fourth and fifth. Even with all of the bad things that I don't like, I still enjoy the episodes that I do watch. I don't watch any of Season Four after the original Source is vanquished and I don't watch any of Season Five before Centennial Charmed or after Necromancing the Stone. But the rest of them I can still enjoy despite the errors.
Samantha, I'm sorry that us pointing out the errors is ruining it for you. I hope you can find the fun in them again.

Thanks for the comments you two as I didn't think there would be any. I had an odd experience while trying to watch Reality Bites...still haven't gotten back to it...and the only place I could come to was The Cafe. My family thinks I am either demented or going senile. Oh well, at least no one is yelling altimeters yet!! ;D
My difficulty started right in the beginning where the girls were getting even with the neighbor because he wasn't being responsible with his dog. I might add that I am always looking for something to help open a new thread to get some chatter going.
I thought about one called "Teach Your Children Well", which came from the dog issue. And no, I don't mean Wyatt and Chris, I am speaking about them!
We have all talked about how Grams and Patty should have at least trained them in the craft before their powers were returned, but there is another area that should have been emphasized...how to be a proper witch in the real world and deal with the majority of those around them.
For example: How would they have dealt with the neighbor if they didn't have powers? I mean they were doing that long before they were Charmed and they should have had a handle on this. Sometimes their (little) misuse of magic came with a big price tag. And no, I am not thinking about lessons that need to be learned in the magical community, but just correct behavior in the world they should know well.
So if they had no powers and had to do something about dog poo, and leaving notes hasn't helped, where to from there? Well, there is an ordinance regarding dog walkers. They are required to clean up the messes they make. Proper channels were ignored that could have solved there problem without resorting to magic. The same with the fruit and I am sure with several other incidents. Perhaps the girls were experiencing Charmed dilemmas not just because they were short changed in the world their family knew they were going to be thrust into, but much might have been lacking on Grams part in instructing them in the ways of the natural world. It's called discipline...
So this is what is happening in my world while I am studying here at Charmed School. When I was innocent, I thought Grams was wonderful, I now think she was too old and too tired to properly play the game on most levels.
This brings me to the elders and any others that stand above them. It was foretold that this would all come about and it would seem that nobody, family or the higher ups...took it to seriously, since no education was planned for their future. So the girls are stuck with the fall-out because the wise ones were asleep on the job...this makes we wonder who punishes them??
Oh, before comments are made about the elders not being in the picture at all...I disagree. Most of us, unless you are in business for yourself, has a boss or someone to answer to, or even pass the buck to. Considering the magnitude of their bestowed upon powers, and their lack of training...I would hope there was something else out there. Perhaps a better opening plan would have been for the girls to receive their (GIFTS) along with a few magical professors nicely wrapped in a Macy's box. ;D

I'm with you on Reality Bites, talk about over doing it. Makes one question the wisdom of the Elders. It's a case of the Elders using a big stick for a little infraction, and in other cases with bigger infractions, no reacton at all.
So, conclusion, the Elders were never consistant; the one thing that makes a wise parent or person for that matter.
Hence, the Elders come off as an after thought.
Take it as normal TV, it was too busy trying to survive in the here and now to write like it had a future. Take it all with a grain of salt and skip a lot of the episodes. And, Kerns turned the show into a comedy more than anything.
Some of the more whimsical episodes are the best ones if looked at right.
Comical Farce without trying, Zen without knowing it.
You know the only way to be Zen....

To Jad, that was a nice post. It was sound, to the point, and made sense to me. The Elders, whom I paid little attention to when I first learn of them...seemed necessary, but in retrospect appeared to be very misinformed. There have been times that I felt I could have applied for a job as their administrator, and accomplished my duties well even after a few shots of Jack Daniels and Keith Richards giving me advise.
Okay...few members get this...in short, I am learning that I am too old to be here. Don't be concerned....my swan song is just around the corner.
Hay LJ...I joined another Charmed site today and received a black mark in a few hours....top that one...... ;D Gee, do you think this make me the better *itch.....Please feel free to fill in the blank....relax, they didn't get it either!!!! So much for black humor.

I'm almost 60 and one of my friends who lurks but doesn't post is almost 65 - there's no way you're older than we are and I know we're not too old to be here! As long as you still have interest in the show, you're not too young and you're not too old. I do hope you decide to stay - we need you - you've proven with all of the threads you've started just how much we do!

You're only as old as you feel - at least that's my motto. It would sometimes make me in my 80s after a hard training session in the gym, but mentally I'll always stay young You're never too old to be here and I'll second what Es said; you are needed here and the amount of threads you have started up definitely prove that. I think it is because of you that this board has become so active in recent months.

What a nice comment. Not that I would desire to diminish any contributions from any member, but I have tried very hard to find something new, old, borrowed and blue that would spark an interest to keep the ball rolling....it truly didn't matter if members agreed or wanted a cat fight...just say something...I love the site and looked for ways to give back to those that were faithful patrons....example, members often asked about the music used on various episodes...there are 8 threads, now buried that, with the help on one member that is seldom here any more, I managed to put together...I don't think I missed much. There is an FYI thread that gives backgrounds on all Charmed characters, sort of a magical history class, that you couldn't find now with out the use of the Dewy decimal system. Oh, and there was a Charmed Halloween Party that was attended by so few it could have been thrown in the Manors laundry room with space to spare. Sometimes being here is like working to get and (A) only to find out the class has been canceled. I suppose I shouldn't question this, but sometimes I just get tired...

Not to worry kiddo...I may get on my broom and fly away for a spell, but the Witch will always come back, as long as there is a place to return to....hope to find you there too!!

The Swan is alive and well and sitting on the back of a broom stick. On the next full moon, just look outside your window...now that's a crazy sight to see...hello, it's only me. As for fading into the background...oh yes, for a needed rest...but the cauldron is forever simmering...eye of newt, wing of bat...I shall always be back.

Your response made me smile as I recalled a comment that Mickey Dolenz of the Monkey's once said...."Age only matters if you're Cheese". For the record I love cheese. All cheese...good, bad, smelly...with or without holes.... ;D
