It just occurred to me how hard it was for the girls to be allowed to see patty in the earlier seasons. It was almost like it was for the same reasons they were not allowed to see prue after her death. But thinking about this, what could be the reason for the elders not letting them see patty? They were closer to grams growing up than patty but they were allowed to see grams. I would have thought the other way around. Like they should have been able to see Patty but not Grams.

I wonder how much that had to do with Grams being a wiccan high priestess...

I wonder how much that had to do with Grams being a wiccan high priestess... That might be the case dear. Because they saw Grams a year after her death. Extremely early compared to seeing Patty decades later or not seeing Prue at all (even if behind the scenes played a part in that).

Perhaps Wiccan high priestesses had special privilages like ghosting down to their living relatives or if not then just in Grams's case because she was the Charmed Ones grandmother obviously.

Well Grams was the only one who appeared to sisters much more than Patty throughout the series. I do think being a wiccan high priestess has its perks.
We only saw Patty two times in the series Just Harried and Cheaper By the Coven where she actually was corporal. Excluding time travel, she only made appeared whenever she helped the sisters from drowning and of course Paige meeting her sisters. I think budget was why they had Grams and Patty corporal than ghosts later on I think though all the time.
I forgot how little Patty actually was seen interacting with her daughters after she died. Which makes her visit in Just Harried that much more special, and that she only interacted with Paige once when she meets her and then you have Cheaper by the Coven, for her final ever appearance on the series, not counting past Patty in the final episode. I actually did like how they left her story in Cheaper By the Coven, especially her scenes with Victor.

Maybe Patty and Prue weren't allowed to come back because they died quite young. Grams was an old woman who had been having health problems, and the sisters all knew she was going to die, even if her actual death came as a shock. Maybe having accepted the idea that Grams died made it possible for her to come back.
With Patty and Prue, both were murdered. Their lives were cut short, and the remaining sisters might not have quite come to terms with that, despite what they acted like in their day to day lives.

In the case of Patty, could it have been the elders were punishing her for her relationship with Sam? Notice how she was able to come back more after Piper married Leo and they discovered Paige, the elders obviously relaxed the punishment because they probably figured well what's the point when one of the friggin Charmed Ones is part whitelighter now?

I think that Party was given the chance as a reward or a gift for what the elders had put them through. Piper was ready to
