So, I was browsing the net and came across a Charmed theory that was absolutely worth sharing and thought I'd also share a few of my own and see what other theories are out there. Charmed isn't really a mystery show and has little to none hidden Easter eggs hidden in it but it's still fun to theorize and see what people can come up with.
Now, as die-hard Charmed fans, it's kind of hard to swallow theories about a 20 year old Television classic that we all know and love but it's fun nonetheless which is the reason for this thread. Now, on with the theories.
1. Prue Halliwell Really Died During the Middle of Season 1
This theory was posted by a fan on Reddit
"In season one, there's a episode called *Which Prue Is It, Anyway?", in which Prue clones herself using an incantation in the Book of Shadows, creating two identical clones of herself....
...Anyways, to keep track of who of the three Prues is the 'real' one, Phoebe and Piper decide to color-code them by letting them use different sweaters. The real Prue is supposed to be wearing a black sweater...
...After the death of one of the Prue clones, the two remaining Prues decide to confront the evil guy in his own home. Both Piper and Phoebe think this is a really bad idea and tries to talk the real Prue out of it. Prue insists on it being a good idea, as she doesn't want to risk the evil guy finding her first and therefore havníng her sisters being exposed to potential harm. However, as they enter Prue's room, they walk in on Prue and her clone being busy adjusting their clothes. They are both wearing the same outfits as in the scene before, so why would they both be readjusting their clothes like that? My explanation for this is that they changed sweaters with each other in order to be able to go through with the risky plan, as they know Piper and Phoebe will do everything in their power to stop Prue from going. As Prue has forseen, the two other Haliwell sisters demands to talk to the real Prue - the one presumably in the black sweater - in order to stop her from going, as the clones' death have proven to be non-harming to the real Prue. The Prue in the blue sweater is forced to wait outside when they have their talk. When the others are done talking, they notice that the Prue in the blue sweater is missing - she has decided to carry through with the plan.....
....As Piper and Phoebe has warned her for, the ill-constructed plan fails and the blue sweatered Prue dies at the hands of the evil guy. The Prue in the black sweater feels this but does not disappear - it appears that she really is the real Prue. Here we come to what is my final conclusion - the incantation Prue read from the Book of Shadows created two clones with all of Prue's memories and experiences who would stay as long as they were needed. When the real Prue - the one in the blue sweater - died, she left behind two sisters who not only were very dependant on her but still also possessed fairly weak powers. They would - at the time - be easily defeated by almost any enemy. Because of this, the remaining Prue clone had to stay, as the spell obliged her to stick around for as long as her presence was needed..... "
This makes sense to me actually. The clone sticking around because technically she was still needed to complete the power of three. It also makes sense if the real Prue died and her clone took her place because the spell called for her to 'multiply her strength' which would consequently allow a witch to cast an ever-lasting spell that would stay in effect even after her untimely demise.
But moreso, look at the change in Prue as the series went on. The blue-sweater clone Prue was more relaxed and uninhibited and we ALL see Prue becoming slowly more relaxed. She's practically a different person by season 2! She quits her job at Bucklands, is okay with being unemployed, chases an unsteady and unpredictable career of being a photographer, starts dating guy after guy (rather than sticking to one i.e. Roger and Andy), and even appears to dress differently and lose her whole all-business-over-protective-seriousness.
Also, in "All Hell Breaks Loose", when the Perceived Cloned Prue really dies, what if THATS the real reason that Leo couldn't heal her! Because that clone was no longer needed as The Source had successfully broken up the Power of Three using Shax and time travel. If this theory is true, then that would mean with all the events going on in this episode and leading up to it, Paige was BOUND to come into the picture regardless whether or not Piper used the To Call A Lost Sister spell. So the clone magic would fizzle out as it was time for the clone to move on and leave her sisters now that they were safe and ready for the rest of their destiny.
2. Leo Wyatt Is Really An Evil Pawn To Spy On The Charmed Ones
Okay, so all of you Piper-Leo fans don't bite my head off just yet. Hear me out.
Leo is obviously ahead of his time, but what if he NEVER REALLY DIED in WWII because he was already immortal! The Charmed Ones had been foreseen since 17th century so there are bound to be some evil organizations keeping watch for them. Leo could have been a warlock or demon meant to penetrate the whitelighter ranks to keep an eye out for them. How does the Underworld get SO MUCH FREAKING INFORMATION on the Charmed Ones. Zankou alone knew them In and Out! There was definitely someone feeding the underworld inside information.
In Season 1, we see Leo do some pretty un-whitelighter things like basic telekinesis in "Wicca Envy" when hiding the tiara and thermodynamic abilities (like when he heated up Phoebe's tea that one time). But he never uses these abilities again, why not? Maybe because he doesn't want the sisters to know he has more in his power arsenal than a basic whitelighter. It would make sense to show Phoebe his thermal power as she was a newbie witch at the time and knew nothing of whitelighters or warlocks or anything for that matter.
In "Blinded By The Whitelighter", we also see that it is possible for evil beings to steal a whitelighter's powers and identity. What if Leo was in WWII waiting for a future whitelighter to fall and take their place or perhaps waiting for a real whitelighter to come help their soldier charge and take their powers? Or maybe even kill the real Leo Wyatt and glamour into him. It would make sense why he left his supposed friends, Rick and Nathan (from "Saving Private Leo") to go back into the field. What if he wasn't going to rescue a fallen soldier but to actually go steal the whitelighter powers he was after in the first place. Leo mentioned that he'd been watching the sisters since they were born, and that one time he passed Piper and Prue on the street before they were Charmed (flashback in "Pre-Witched). Let's face it, Leo was creepy! And definitely a stalker. What if it was his plan to get assigned to them from the beginning? Goosebumps, right?
And remember when Leo met Cole? He shook Cole's hand and we see Cole withdraw his hand with orb-residue on it! That can't be a mistake. If this theory is true, that could have been Leo signaling to Belthazor that he was supposed to be their whitelighter, a sort of "play it cool, I'm on your side," kind of deal.
But let's discuss some key points here:
- Leo is perhaps the ONLY whitelighter we see that doesn't follow the rules. He hates wearing whitelighter robes saying his jeans are "more comfortable". He shamelessly flirts (and enjoys the reciprocated flirtations from) both Phoebe and Piper upon meeting them which is also very unwhitelighter-like.
- He gives the sisters far too much attention. He's a whitelighter with probably like 10-50 other charges yet chooses to constantly be around and even move-in with the sisters? They do deserve special attention being the Charmed Ones but even Natalie disagreed with how much he was giving them and if anyone can spot fishy activity, it would definitely be her!
- Leo is NOT a pacifist. I'm sorry but he is not. He jumps on demons' backs, rushes into swordfights with medieval knights, helps make vanquishing potions occasionally, and let's not forget about the time he angrily threw Chris around the Manor after being sent to Vallhalla.
- He CHOSE to become an avatar. He readily accepted denying his whitelighter side to obtain untold power to become a paragon of neutrality where NO ONE could put him in check. He has a dark side and Season 7 definitely capitalized on that.
- With as much as he knows from general knowledge and all his years of spying on the girls, have you noticed that he doesn't offer helpful information until the very last moment it's needed? It's like he is literally watching the girls fight demons and the moment it gets too tough, all of a sudden he has a bit of information that might help or "gets a call from the Elders". What if those "calls" aren't really calls. What if he's actually getting called from the underworld to report back, or is just making the calls up to get out of there and see how things play out?
- He can't die. Even as a mortal, it was IMPOSSIBLE to kill Leo. He was hit by a car meant to kill him and still survived for crying out loud! What kind of mortal can escape the angel of death?
- The Leo in "Witchstock"...... Nuff said. What a sleaze.
- Lastly, his children. Wyatt and Chris are HARDLY angels! Chris is so troubled in the head that it's easy to conceive the fact he has evil in his blood somewhere and we ALL know Wyatt does as there is an entire timeline of Wyatt becoming evil. Also, Wyatt and Chris both have telekinesis.....a power we see Leo use in Season 1 during his creepy, stalking days. We assume they get their TK from Piper's side of the family, but what if it's Leo's hidden warlock heritage that grants the boys their other powers?
3. Nicholas is Phoebe's Biological Father
In "That 70's Episode", we see a male suitor stop by the manor to give the girls flowers under the pretense of feeling sorry for their loss. We later find out he was around during Phoebe's conception and is actually a warlock after their powers. Back in the 70s, Victor was out of the picture and Patty was pretty much a struggling mother of two. It wouldn't take a lot for the warlock to romance her into bed. This would explain Phoebe's tendency towards evil throughout the series as none of the other sisters have such a tendency. Let's look at some key pointers.
- Phoebe's premonition power started out exactly the same as the demonic seer, Kyra's. Don't witches and demons have different power sets? So why does Phoebe's powers match exactly the kind of magic that an old demonic seer is walking around sporting?
- We see Phoebe use her powers for personal gain VERY EASILY (almost too easy, as if that's what they're meant for) during the entire series! It got so bad that they eventually had to be taken away from her in "Crimes and Witch Demeanors". Why would a council take a Charmed One's active powers? Because they don't want her to discover her true potential and stray from her destiny. A Charmed One suddenly awakening her inner warlock would be very bad for the balance of good and evil.
- She had powers from the womb. The only other babies we see with powers from the womb are Wyatt (who could possibly be the son of a warlock via Leo theory above), and Phoebe's unborn child with Cole AKA The Source's seed. It seems only extremely powerful babies can perform magic from the womb so Phoebe giving Patty premonitions from the womb points to something not quite right as witches don't develop their powers until later on in life. Whereas warlocks and other creatures are born with them. Just think about it.
- Both when being taken over by the Woogeyman and being turned into a warlock by Dantalian, Phoebe could use the power of materialization (or conjuring) very easily. Which is a basic warlock power by some.
- Patty had a forbidden affair and conceived Paige. It's not too big of a jump to assume she also conceived Phoebe in the same manner.
4. Elise Rothman Is A Whitelighter
Remember Aunt Jackie in "The Fourth Sister"? What if that really is the same character we see portraying Elise Rothman at Phoebe's workplace? Think about it. She suddenly gets custody of Aviva who is a young and troubled witch; sounds like a whitelighter move to me. She also fell down a flight of stairs and came out fine. Three years later, we see a woman with the same face at a job where Phoebe lucks into getting from an innocent that was guided to her via premonition. It's like the Elders WANTED Phoebe to work for Elise. Elise is kind of like her mentor in a way and that's what whitelighters do best. It would make sense to place a whitelighter in the sister's lives just in case as they are the most powerful witches in the world. If you were an Elder, would you honestly trust Leo to guide and protect not one, not two, but THREE witches of destiny all by himself!? Just something to think about.
5. Magic Doesn't Exist and the Events of "Charmed" Are All in a Traumatized Phoebe's Head.
Phoebe was born into trauma; her mother died before she even got a chance to know her, her father left, and she had an over-bearing grandmother who was hardest on her. Phoebe was read fairy tales growing up as we all know, so what if her young mind made them real in her head to cope with her life? In "The Three Faces of Phoebe", we see that young Phoebe acts ecstatic about finding about Cole being her future lover. She refers to him as "their prince". It's like she's in another reality entirely! What if Phoebe creates worlds in her mind to cope with stress and trauma and that's what we're actually seeing when we watch Charmed.
- "Charmed" started once Phoebe got back from New York. Think about it, you move back home into an old Victorian manor with a spooky attic on a stormy night, a killer is loose, the power is out, and you're only form of entertainment is your mind! This was her psychotic break into finally accepting her life was a magical journey.
- Phoebe was the first to talk about magic. Her sisters acted as if this was NORMAL for Phoebe to talk about insane things and believe they were real. They weren't concerned in the slightest that she believed they were all witches. It's almost as if they grew up with her saying things like this all the time and even once quoted, "You always use to move the pointer" when playing with the spirit board.
- Jeremy was real, but not a warlock. Phoebe came back to San Francisco to her old childhood home, filled with traumatic memories, and on top of that, was feeling the pressure of finding a job and to show Prue she was a capable adult, and also the pressure of her sister dating a serial killer. What if Phoebe's mind turned Jeremy into a warlock. Obviously, the sisters turned out okay, but what if the true events of that first episode were of Andy and Darryl arresting Jeremy and taking him to jail. Phoebe's mind would twist events into thinking the three of them vanquished him together. And the rest is history.
- Her premonition power can be confused with a psychosis. When she first used her "power", she saw a car hitting a neighborhood kid in the street. It's possible she heard the car, saw the kids in the distance, and her mind filled in the blanks, causing her to perceive to see the future. If you re-watch the episode, you will actually see that it might have been her yelling and screaming that caused the crash. The boys were perfectly fine, just rolling around happily until a crazy lady on a bike starts pedaling towards them screaming at them. Turns out, she gets in the accident instead and her sisters are concerned for her physical well-being afterwards, but not at all surprised at her reckless behavior.
6. "Charmed" Is In The Same Universe as "The Craft" and Sarah Bailey is Their Cousin
The movie, "The Craft," tells of a girl named Sarah who moved from San Francisco with her father and step-mother to LA for a new life. Sarah doesn't know it yet but she is actually a natural witch. My theory is this: Grams having more than 3 marriages, it's likely she had more than one child. I mean, come on. What if Patty had a sister and this sister was actually the mother of Sarah Bailey in "The Craft". It would make sense with her being from San Francisco and her father raising her to be normal. Similar to what Victor tried to do with his daughters and failed because Grams wouldn't let him. What if Sarah started showing signs of magic and her father freaked out, and moved to LA to get as far away from her magical family as possible.
It's also not that far-fetched of a theory considering Constance M. Burge was inspired by "The Craft" in creating Charmed, so maybe she subconsciously (or not) threaded the two together while creating her masterpiece of a show.
7. Grams Knew The Future The Whole Time
In "That 70's Episode", the sisters told a younger Penny, that she would be the grandmother and prime guardian to the Charmed Ones. Grams does on to say that she'll whip up a memory potion or something to protect the future and consequences. But do you really think she did a memory spell on herself once the girls returned to their own time? I don't think so. Let's explore why.
- Grams told bedtime stories to the girls involving real demons and real vanquishing spells. It was how Phoebe knew how to vanquish the Woogeyman. It was almost as if she knew they would grow up to become powerful witches still living that house and would need it someday.
- She hosted coven gatherings in the guise of bridge club as we found out in "How To Make A Quilt Out of Americans". What if this was only because she knew the Charmed Ones were her grandbabies, so she was preparing for them. Building power, collecting weapons, tools, and spells to pass down to them when the time came.
- She's always in control of situations and prepared for anything. Almost as if she was preparing the girls' whole lives for any and all kind of trouble.
8. Piper's Powers Are Unlimited On A Molecular Level
- Remember in "The Honeymoon Is Over" when she froze the entire courtroom whilst making the demons immune to her freeze? Well, when asked to freeze the demons afterward, she replied , "I Can't, that's why they call it immunity" or something similar. She MADE them immune to her freeze. What if she could do that with other things. Like freeze everyone except people with powers, or freeze an entire room so only the people with diabetes remain unfrozen. Dumb example but you get the idea.
- Piper has shown to ability to divert magical attacks by exploding them, and redirecting them back towards the attacker or away from their destination. They call it Deviation in most Charmed circles.
- Melinda prophecised that the second sister would freeze time. Piper can also blow things up, which is a HUGE difference from freezing time. Leo saying that Piper's powers were molecular based says that Piper's freezing time is basically a parlor trick compared to her real potential as a witch.
- She blew up a magical barrier meant to be immune to magical powers in "Lost and Bound" to get into the academy to save Tyler.
- Combined with Wyatt's unborn power, she was indestructible! Not even Cole could hurt her.
- She blew up a magical fairy-tale conjured wolf from inside it's stomach. 0.0
- She froze an entire neighborhood (and maybe even more) in the alternate future in "Witch Trial".
- She can kill most upper level demons by herself with her power alone, no Power of Three required.
- When turned into a warlock by the evil priestess in S3, her power took on an added elemental twist.
- But she doesn't know what she can do until she actually TRIES to do it. Piper's personality is very practical. Therefore, she wouldn't be interested in training her powers like Prue did with her astral projection and telekinetic combat, or Phoebe did with her forced premonitions and levi-meditating, or even Paige and how she basically did a Wiccan crash-course on herself. Piper never cared about getting more powerful so makes sense she wouldn't find out the true potential of her power.
So that's it for now. Might add more later, but tell me what you guys think and if you have any theories of your own.
