Everyone knows this as the infamous "Birth of PhoeMe" episode, namely because of the ending where Phoebe lets Cole go. And while I can see why and even agree, the one scene in particular leads to why she was already PhoeMe before she even betrayed her sisters by faking Cole's death. Which leads to why I think Power Outage was the real culprit that ruined our beloved Phoebs. I'm referring to this scene here
What I hate about this scene is how easily it ruins Phoebe in just a matter of 5 minutes. Even before this scene her first onscreen appearance is just her talking about Cole, complaining he's not been around for a week. Because of this scene, Phoebe letting Cole go was the cherry on top rather than the definitive moment of Phoebe=PhoeMe. PhoeMe is on full display in this scene.. From the first few seconds here the dynamic between Prue and Phoebe feel so different. They don't feel like sisters, but rather a mother/daughter where the daughter (in this case Phoebe) is trying to walk away to keep secrets from her Mom (in this case Prue) and doesn't feel like conflict at all. Compare this to the Power of Two scene
Where you can tell there is tension between Phoebe and Prue, but Phoebe doesn't want conflict in a way that ends with them ruining their fighting/bond. Noted by Phoebe's line "We're not about to get into a fight are we?" You could side with either sister here. Phoebe's gestures are vastly different, despite how these scenes mirror one another. In Sleuthing, Phoebe just barely pays no mind to Prue and acts as if she's an inconvenience. And this is despite the fact at the very end of the previous episode Phoebe was the one who made an oath not to keep secrets from one another, yet the first thing she does is avoid Prue when Prue is trying to be reasonable and honest with her. I could understand if this were Season 1 Prue where there was conflict between, them, but here ever since Sight Unseen their relationship development took a step back from the development of the previous seasons.
I also hate how this episode begins how selfish and hypocritical Phoebe becomes. She's really dismissive of the fact she got a parking ticket in Prue's car, even though last Season (The Painted World) was all about her wanting to make up the fact she ruined Prue's car. youtu.be/RQrK7oxQdxg?t=148 In Sleuthing she walks past Prue with some distain as if Prue's done something toward her, I also don't like how she acts so clueless about magic, when it was literally her forte in the previous 2 seasons. All of a sudden she doesn't just care less about magic, but seemed ditzy about it too!
Phoebe is also a hypocrite because she expects Prue to just automatically trust Cole despite the fact prior to Primrose Empath he tried to kill them and take the Book (and even sent the demon to enrage them before he was taken over). But yet when Prue mentions that Phoebe never liked any of her boyfriends Phoebe agrees to that. So its okay if Phoebe is dismissive or doesn't like who her sister(s) date, yet they can't be suspicious about the fact Cole is a demon? It also makes it worse when you consider that Andy was also in that category, even though at no point in Season 1 did it ever show Phoebe had problems with Andy! She also told them to not keep secrets from her, right as she was about to do the same to them and does again at the end of the episode.
