From what I remember of the last few episodes of season seven, Phoebe decides to go back to college to get a PhD. I think she makes the decision in Freaky Phoebe, gets berated by her college professor for plagiarism in Imaginary Fiends (I'm not even going to mention the college professor's completely unnecessary 180 change of heart about Phoebe by the end of that episode) and is still definitely studying for that PhD still in the episode before the season finale, Death Becomes Them, as the guy who gets killed because of her is a fellow student.
Now, understandably, there is little that she can do about this degree when the sisters face Zankou and then fake their deaths. However, when they come back in season eight revealing that they are actually alive to the world, Phoebe returns to her work at the paper, but never mentions the college degree studies again? Surely since she has her life back and had wasted however much money on starting that new degree, surely she would have more to say on it?
Lazy writing? Yes. Continuity errors? Yes. Dropped character development subplot? Yes.
(I don't have season seven on DVD to rewatch to clarify and at the moment I can't find out much about it online, but it may have been a masters course and not a PhD.)
There's not really a question in this. It may have been more of a rant. To make this more of a discussion though, do you think this plot point should have been continued into season eight rather than completely forgotten about?
(Oh and if there was a mention of her continuing the degree in season eight and I completely glossed over that part, please point it out to me, because I really don't remember any mention of it.)

You are quite right. It was NOT mentioned ever again!! She went to college to get a PhD, yet with the whole Zankou dealing and faking their deaths it was simply forgotten. Just as she was doing her job even if she was dead and playing her own cousin. As if!?

I guess other things got in the way..though faking your death and keeping under demon's radars would have been more important lol. It would have been tricky to continue with it as she assumed another identity though. It would have been nice for us to be able to see Phoebe get her qualification, as her studies have been integrated into her story lines over the years.

I'm on about going back to it after the fake identity arc was over. Obviously she couldn't go back to it while pretending to be someone else.

Knowing Phoebe, once she fell in lust with Coop she got so caught up in possibly getting Ladybug she totally forgot about going back to school.

lol I'm very surprised that Phoebe's PhD was never talked about again. Maybe she got it off screen or maybe like Es said she was to busy falling for her boring Cupid.

Did she ever go back to school after Prue's death and after she got her "Ask Phoebe" job? I always thought that was part of trying to make her the middle child rather than the baby. That might truly be the reason off-screen
Although that could also be the real reason. I know when I got my job after graduating from college, I never felt like I had to keep going because I liked the job I had and didn't want a promotion - I just fit so perfectly where I was (even if they did let me go a few years later...but then I found my current job where I fit even better.) We know how much Phoebe loved being "Ask Phoebe" - maybe once she got that job, she decided there was no need to go back.

There's actually a whole subplot in Sin Franscisco about Phoebe trying to do a make-up essay so as she can pass and graduate (hence the fact that she goes to see her ethics professor). Then in The Demon Who Came In From The Cold, Phoebe is actually having her graduation party at P3 (Cole does not show up even though he was supposed to). Therefore, she finished college before Prue's death in season three. Therefore, starting Ask Phoebe in season four has nothing to do with it.

Wait...when did you start talking about Season Three? You were the one who brought up Season Seven and her wanting to go back for her PhD.
I know she got her bachelor's in Season Three - that's when Cole didn't make it for her graduation - although personally I think it was her associates - she wasn't in school long enough to get her bachelor's, unless she went to school in New York, and from what we know, that doesn't seem likely. So how would she hop over her bachelor's and her master's and go for her PhD.
But if indeed she talked about going for it in Season Seven, then indeed she wasn't happy with just being "Ask Phoebe"...and if that's the case, it would be her being more interested in finding the guy who would provide the sperm so she could get Lsdybug than getting her degree.

I started talking about season three, because you were comparing it to the first time that she went back to college (before Prue's death).

Phoebe was getting her Masters not her PhD. I also I believe it was established that Phoebe dropped out of university. The point always was that she was going back to school. I am not a hundred percent sure on this though.

She wasn't in New York long enough to be able to get her bachelor's in only one year in San Francisco - not unless she used that smart spell...and I don't think Prue would've called her some of the things she did in Season One if she'd come that close to one in San Francisco before Grams' death. There was no mention whatsoever about Phoebe even starting college during Season One and Season Two and Three were no more than a year.
I still think she got her associates in Season Three and if she was going back, it was going back after her bachelor's - unless the degree is specifically mentioned. But if it is, I'd count it as another inconsistency. She definitely was nowhere near her PhD.

I have always felt that they kind of left it ambiguous, never really clarifying it. I guess since she spent two years in school I always assumed she had to have had prior credits to graduate in just two years.I agree her going to New York only for six months would not been enough time to start that. But if Phoebe was 23 at the start of the series that would be around 5-6 years of her doing nothing all we know is that for 6 months of one of those years she lived in New York and worked. Hey she could have done two years of schooling in New York and then went back there free from school to look for Victor. Of course that maybe could be true. I think she probably did at least do some sort of schooling after high school but dropped out not feeling passionate, it also probably has to be out of the Bay area because of that comment she made to Piper in "Power Outage" of how she did not have the guts to go out of San Francisco to college. I find it funny and ironic that one of the few things that was left open and not contradicted was Phoebe's past.

Hey guys, just to clarify. In season 7, Freaky Phoebe, I believe Phoebe said "Hello, bachelor's degree four years!" When she was ranting to Piper about the "shrink" touching her column. That certainly means that she was *interested* in going for her Masters in Psych. What surprises me the most is that she was already enrolled in the next episode considering you usually have to apply to get into universities in california almost a year beforehand. Ignoring that, she was obviously not able to finish her degree, probably not even her first semester, because of the whole zankou/faking their death thing. I think Phoebe was just too busy to go back to school in season 8. After they "came back from the dead" they were famous and stalked reporters, then Leo was taken away and Piper needed help, then she felt she needed to get her own life and then she was back in her "I need to find love like yesterday" phase plus having to fight the triad and their grudge with Billie and Christy. I'm willing to bet that some time after the ultimate battle between her having her kids and writing her book that she probably got her Masters.
I don't have time to check, but I *believe* that she said the words "I'm gonna get my masters" at the end of Freaky Phoebe.
And someone on here was right in saying that Phoebe graduated with her bachelors on The Demons That Came In From The Cold.
I believe she must have completed most of her jr college units/credits before going to new york, or maybe she completed that and tried going to school in new york

I think Phoebe was attending a Junior College for two years so toward the end of season 3 she graduated with a associate degree. Then in seven when she when wanted to move forward with her education she was planning on getting a bachelor degree degree and that is reserved for 4 year colleges. Phoebe could've done some classes online to finish up her major after season 8.

One thing for certain - IF she got her PhD, it would've been quite a bit into the future... But I can definitely see her doing that online while writing her column and raising her daughters. Perhaps she felt she needed that before writing her book... (and, naturally, since I don't believe a word of the flash-forward at the end of S8, I'm rolling my eyes as I write this.)

For Phoebe, one of the consequences of being a witch was an afterthought on her past rebellions and the desire to complete her studies
Likely, seeing that often Phoebe felt inadequate, I believe she made an effort to get her bachelor degree to sharpen up
In Payback’s A Witch I remember her attempt to confort Wyatt using his little bear with fun and unpredictable results
I like the characters that progress and change, Phoebe, from rebelious girl without ideas and perspectives to, almost by accident, respected columnist and then writer,is the sister who makes the more complex path
