Was being mad and evil just a trick for the Charmed Ones to find other ways to vanquish him? When Phoebe refused to help him commit suicide on his terms, does he create more situations to blind them to hatred: working with Jeric, making Piper choose between Phoebe and Paige, having Phoebe herself mummified to win her over? Was using the Nexus actually an attempt to make Phoebe evil or be killed by the Shadow? And changing reality to a time when he and Phoebe was the happiest…well shouldn’t it be before Prue died or when Cole was human? He also didn’t seem to care he wasn’t invincible anymore when the Avatar warns him and pleads him to reverse the spell. So has Cole’s ultimate plan always been to commit suicide?

Cole was always smart and used this to his advantage, and with knowing the sisters as well as he did, he could have had the upper hand here. He might have gone crazy because he knew for sure that he couldn't win Phoebe back for good. My opinion.

Didn't his madness start with Barbas tormenting him and when he took back the powers he changed. I think Cole finally gave up on being good. It took her to open his heart and her to push him over the limit. He became a poorly written character

His new power was too difficult to handle even for a demon strong like him, as the power of the goddesses was a risk even for strong witches as the Charmed Ones

Cole wasn’t really mad. He was only mad because he had been drinking. After having his mind being messed with by Barbas in “sympathy for a demon” and seeing all the sisters including phoebe pull away from him once he got his powers back, was again heartbreaking for him. The whole ordeal reminded him of when Reynor did the same to his mind in season 3 (messing with his head) and he though then he lost phoebe for good.
It drove him to drink and in his drunkenness, to try to figure out a way to vanquish himself. Since he couldn’t be good or couldn’t be evil and saw no way out for him. And remember the avatars were still actively messing with his head though all this. Making it even worse.
But once he figured out that he had a way forward, (by either taking in the nexus to turn phoebe evil or to re recreate reality with the help of the avatars) he then sobered up fast and wasn’t mad anymore. (“Importance of being phoebe” and “Centennial Charmed”)
