Just an idea I had from a thread I babbled in. I might continue if so inclined (and if people dont hate it I mean)
Cole is warned of his choices. Timeframe: A Mermaid's Tale Part 2, Season 5
She couldn't believe that she was doing this.
Paige couldn't believe the whole situation. Here she was, trying to convince the former Source of all Evil (and still some likely) to come and talk to her sister turned mermaid and declare their love so they could save Piper under the influence of her own heedless courage spell, and their niece. She could have laughed at it all if imminent death and or abandonment weren't a factor. Not to mention ones own words made a bitter meal.
Cole was shooting her down. For a moment, she thought she had seen a wild hope in his eyes as she had explained about the recent love-centeredness of Phoebe's advice column. I'm sorry Pheebs! she had thought as she did so. Somehow or another I'll keep him away from you after, I promise, but right now, we need him! But then Cole's reluctance had shone through.
"You told me to go away," he muttered, throwing some objects blindly into a suitcase. "Phoebe said it. Darryl said it. I got the message." Even through his anger there was a lick of pain she could detect there. "And now you're changing your opinion based on a theory?!"
Paige's slight figure rounded the table, trying to catch Cole's eyes again as she sensed him pulling away. "What if I could prove it?" she challenged, an idea forming in her mind. It was a desperate one, but she was perfectly ready to admit she was paddling right down desperate creek.
Cole moved as if he were about to speak- and then the strangest expression descended upon his face, so quickly it was almost jarring. There was a faint frown there, nothing new, but now it seemed, at least to Paige, that it was tinged with faint shock. And not "maybe I have a chance" shock, more "whats even going on" kind of shock. "Hello? Cole?" She flapped a hand in the air near his face. "I'm sorry, but we don't have a lot of time! Look, I can prove it to you!" She let out her breath, calming herself somewhat as she reached for the wellspring of magic within her, allowed the words to come. "Open Phoebe's heart to Cole-"
"No!" Cole moved so fast that Paige's heart leapt into her chest, only her control over her powers keeping her from a panic-orb as he grabbed her arms- not harshly, but certainly *firmly*. "Just...please don't. You don't have to do that, alright?" He stepped away, still looking all strange and distant. It was bothering her more than she thought it should.
"Fine," Paige put up her hands, trying not to shiver over the fact that he had touched her. "Will you help her?"
Cole looked away, toward a window that opened upon the city. "I'll help you," he told her quietly, carefully, as if the words were a bomb with an unknown fuse.
Never mind his manner, there was what she needed. "Good. Great! I cant explain it all right now, but if you're at the shoreline..."

Only Phoebe can prove she still loves me.
The words were on the tip of Cole's tongue when the world stopped.
Or at least the room. Paige was still, gazing up at him earnestly, the "flower" in her hair no longer stirring with the room's air currents. His first instinctive thought was Piper, but then he would be frozen and not Paige and he'd never know it. Warily, he took stock of the rooms in a sweep of glance- only to find them gone in a grey, obscuring mist. When were we moved? he thought.
"Cole? Cole Turner, right?"
In a slight whoosh of displaced air and a small whirl of color a woman stood in front of him. Standing a little taller than the frozen figure of Paige, she was dark haired, a single braid down to her waist in front of one shoulder, with bright brown eyes behind horn rimmed glasses. A pretty, if very bright set of skirts hid her legs and footwear below a modest red blouse. A satchel hung from her wide belt. She grinned, dimpling. "That has to be you. You still feel of the dead."
This woman had blinked in, but acted nothing (or dressed!) like any warlock he knew. Nor did she seem to be too interested in Paige, though she threw her a glance. Cole's wariness heightened. "Excuse me, who are you?" he demanded.
His mysterious guest offered him a playful, but quite accurate, curtsy. "My name is Zee Hawkins," she declared as she rose. "And I am here to save your life, Mr. Turner."
Cole eyed her, folding his arms. "From?"
This Zee jerked a thumb in Paige's direction. "Well her, of course. Also your ex. OK, all of the Charmed Ones to be honest." Zee turned a more thoughtful eye on Paige. "Hee, she's kind of adorable, really. And she's about to cast a spell on you. It will make you feel the love that Phoebe still has for you."
Cole felt his heart rate rise. "...so its true?" he asked, willing his face to be still as yearning raced through him. "She still feels that way?"
Zee nodded. "Of course she does. Why wouldn't she? Those feelings just turn off no matter who you are or what happened between you. But thats the rub." Behind her light manner, Cole sensed that Zee was a little reluctant. "Paige places that spell on you and it makes you think that Phoebe actually feels more than just...echoes for you. It makes you have hope that you can somehow rekindle how things were between you, and I'm sorry Mr. Turner, but that's just not true. Love just doesn't turn off, yeah, but it does fade. And it fades from Phoebe, um, pretty quick."
No. "And why, exactly, should I believe you?" Cole gritted, refusing to consider Zee's declaration. "You blink in here, telling me that what, things are hopeless for me? You could be anyone, working an angle. I dont even know what you are!" His voice had risen before he realized it and he fought it down to a more reasonable tone. "You could have any number of reasons to stop me."
Zee chuckled, a little self deprecatingly. "They told me you would be a hard sell. I'll be up front, I do represent some people. The rules say that the last inductee has to extend the invitation to the next. And I rolled the bones and you came up chalk white." She carefully took off one of her bracelets and offered it to him. After a moment, he took it, only to have it shift into a fine white envelope with a red wax seal. "There's only so much I'm allowed to share with you right now- we have to be careful about who knows about us. Suffice it to say right now that you shouldn't let Paige cast that spell upon you. If you want to help anyhow fine, but go of your own will. And *be careful*, Mr. Turner, if you choose to help the Charmed Ones.
What you give wont be what you get. Um-" she nervously looked at her watch. "My friends can only hold this pocket open for a while. Information, invitation. What you do with them is entirely up to you." Another quick dip of curtsy.
What you give wont be what you get. Cole's thoughts echoed Zee's words, like awful wasps stinging. Be careful. He hardly noticed her blink away. He loved Phoebe so much still that it was almost pain, but the instincts that had allowed him to survive for a century were up in arms.
Just echoes. It fades from Phoebe.
Does this mean that somehow or another...? He stared at Paige's fair face. No. No, this Zee is probably lying. But he tucked the envelope into his coat as his feelings whirled. He had watched people for a very long time and if it was a lie, it was quite a sincere one.
The grey mist crashed away and Paige raised an impatient hand to wave. "Hello? Cole? I'm sorry, but we don't have a lot of time!" she insisted. "Look, I can prove it to you! Open Phoebe's heart to Cole-"
Oh hells, was this the spell? "No!" he cried, stilling her before he could even think about it. Paige's eyes were wide with shock, and more than a little fear, as he asked her not to perform her magic. He had listened without even meaning to now, broken whatever it was that would have happened here if he had allowed it. And if what Zee was implying was right, might owe her a favor.
Her and her benefactors.
