Leo was dangerous. He was a ticking time bomb that was ready to go off. The only reason he didn't is, unlike Cole, the sisters never abandoned him to suffer and rot until it came time to kill him. They even went so far as to cover up him murdering an Elder which I'd argue is much worse compared to those two criminals shooting up a bar and that slumlord. About the only truly repugnant death I would hold S5 Cole accountable for is that driver who accidentally hit Paige's car.
This just makes me wish even more that Cole would have agreed to join with the other Avatars and let go of Phoebe. I got the impression that they would have treated him much better compared to the sisters. They're manipulative, yes, but they do seem to genuinely care about each other.

I am curious if this arc was planned for 5 with Cole and got dumped when Julian left. I do wonder what would of happened if Julian did stay for all of season 5, and this arc happened with Cole and not Leo. Still turns out bad either way I reckon. That is usually thought to be the case. There are bits of dialogue where it seems really blatant. I can't remember the exact episode, but there was one scene in particular where Leo was talking to the Avatars about his new powers and asked "what was the point if he can't get Piper back?" Definitely looked like they'd just swapped out "Cole and Phoebe" for "Leo and Piper" in some of the scripts. Plus there was all the stuff about the sisters being suspicious and seeing Leo as crazy and potentially dangerous- it all sounds very similar to s5 Cole when you think about it. Very true. I didn't really think about it before because Charmed was so good at reusing storylines. So if Julian stayed, Season 5 could have actually been a great success. It really is a shame that the casting was incredibly important to the shows direction. I can imagine that Charmed would have been such an exhausting show to film but probably equally challenging as well. I'm glad Julian realised it was a good time to leave because I was a huge fan of NipTuck. Season 7 did seem to be a little more reflective of Season 4 and it also referenced S1 - 3 as well. Not entirely a bad season but then I totally forgot about Nick Lachey. Kyle was great though!

The Avatars were rubbish in Season Five, and they were rubbish in Season Seven.
Were they so bankrupt for ideas in S7 that they had to dust off this old idea, change the names from Phoebe/Cole to Piper/Leo, and try to convince this was a fresh idea?

So the Elders wanted to recycle Leo cause of him siding with Avatars or was it cause he killed an Elder?

So the Elders wanted to recycle Leo cause of him siding with Avatars or was it cause he killed an Elder? It was after he tried to kill Zola. Zola said if he had done then he would've had to be recycled. But then once all The Avatar stuff is over with, I think Zola's death is pretty much forgotten about.

I think it was both. Killing the Elder and siding with the Avatars were the things which let the Elders decide to recycle Leo. But at first it was killing Gideon. That was the first strike, the rest was just the bonus!

I started rewatching Season 7 and 8 - missing the beginnings of both - and I have actually really enjoyed them.
In some ways, over Seasons 5 and 6.
The build up to Utopia was interesting even though the storyline anti-climaxed and Zankou was the smartest villan we've seen since the Seer!
They are Seasons knows for Guest Stars, some of them I really like: Kyle Brodie, Drake, the 2nd Seer, Cole.
I also like how we have 2 different finales.
Season 7's stealing of the BOS, their Powers, the Nexus (throw back to Season's 1 and 5!), the zombie innocence and losing their confidence. Also the pull at the heartstring moments like when Piper says goodbye to Wyatt and Chris. The reinforcements and nod to the magical community was done well.
Season 8's references to the Hollow, Source, Cole etc, the time travel and Grams/Mom flashbacks and flash forwards to Piper Grams as well as visits from Chris and Wyatt. The Angel of Destiny. The house explosion with the manor debris memorabilia and grandfather clock in pieces! The magical community is against them, blocked from Magic School but have the Book of Shadows - the opposing situation from Season 7. However, both finales involve the sisters vanished from the manor.
Plus there are some stand out episodes overall like Witchness Protection, Death Becomes Them, the Billie Zane and Julian McMahon episode arc and Vaya Cons Leos Kill Billie Vol. 2 in Season 8.
I love Charmed!

I would add also for season 7
"Styx feet under" "imaginary friends" - when piper mistakenly summons future Wyatt.
Season 8 : "desperate house-witches" - pipers mommy issues with Mandy, Paige interfering in phoebes relationship and seeing the Source one more time. The look on billies face when she mentioned the Source to the sisters. "Payback is a Witch" - Paige healing for the first time and phoebes magical psychology 101 spell on Wyatt's bear gone awry. Last time I saw piper get angry at phoebe that way for a spell gone wrong was season 2 "Give me A Sign". Been some time phoebe has cast an innocent spell that backfired. Something I loved she used to do. Last I remember prior to this was the one she cast that summoned future and past phoebe to help her decide about Cole.
One thing also that I noticed in seasons 7 and 8 was that the sisters relied more and more on Paige's powers, abilities , smarts and leadership than in prior seasons where piper would always brush her off. And phoebe spent most of season 8 figuring out how much she missed just being a witch and reconnecting with her first love for the craft thanks to Billie in a way. And also almost all the demon related battles in season 8 were somehow connected to Billie or partly billies fault.

Paiges storyline and her independence made the Season 7 and 8 a lot more interesting. I did like Desperate Housewives but I HATE HATE HATE how Paige questions how they killed the Source before. Payback's A Witch is another good episode and the last half of Season 8 is saved by Paige, Henry and Leo. Overall, nothing like the good ol' days of Seasons 1 to 4 but still certainly entertaining!

I like S7, as well. I love Brody and the Avatars storyline. I just wished we had gotten more whitelighter Brody. He's very focused on what he needs to do and is willing to throw even Paige underneath the bus, to achieve that.
