This is just a masterpost of some of the notes I have taken while watching the Just Add Magic. The full review is a WIP.
__________________________________________________-
Oh, oh! So I'm watching this show right now that I've been curious about for a while, and that my sister just brought up again yesterday... it's called Just Add Magic (not to be confused with H2O: Just Add Water), and it's totally a Charmed knock-off, just with kids. And cooking.
Here are the similarities that I got from the pilot! Tell me if any of this sounds familiar:
Three girls are brought together- well, okay. The main characters of this show are already together, but still. And they're friends, not sisters.
They find a mysterious old book in the attic.
Main character is the take-charge one.
Second girl is always nervous and unsure of things, and is the deadpan snarker.
Third girl is sporty and chipper.
Scream Charmed...? No, not yet...?
Oh my gosh, the girls totally sound like the Charmed Ones, too!
The main characters of the show, from left to right: Hannah (totally not Piper), Darbie (totally not Phoebe), and Kelly (totally not Prue).
The book! And the way she took it out was very familiar, too...
Oh my God... when they made the Shut 'em Shortcake, the Kelly (the main character)'s brother shut up! (aka, he can't talk.) and then Darbie (the girl in green) couldn't stop talking, and Not-Piper couldn't talk either!
Important point: The spell wears off after about a day or so.
The book can move on its own.
And then there's this screenshot...
Here's a comparison shot...
Similar?
Black best friend that reminds me a lot of Darryl... will he find out about their secret sometime?
There's a healing cake or something that can, well... heal.
The magic comes with a price. That sounds familiar, too...
The girls play basketball. The closest to fighting sequences we'll ever get.
Oh, and there's an alpha b***h named Charlotte. Augh...
And tons of indie music that sounds like they could be for commercials.
"Trust your instincts."
Coach: (rattles off a bunch of names from a list)
Kelly: Those sound like boys names.
Coach: Oops. That was the detention list.
Lawl!
Kelly: I just feel like everything that happened was meant to happen, you know? Finding the book, cooking the recipes... every cause had an effect. It's like... it was destiny.
OH MY GOD THIS IS TOTALLY CHARMED
Darbie: This is getting heavy.
Oh, Darbie! You comic relief character, you!
Darbie: But our spells were off.
Kelly: No. They were broken.
So they have to save their grandma from a spell she's under. Okay, cool. She's not dead.
Wow. This music is getting incredibly Charmed-y.
I got a sense of deja vu looking at this. What does it remind me of...?
Aaaand a zoom out of the house, which totally reminds me of the Halliwell Manor, with that white trim and stuff.
The book is glowing! Oh boy...
Anywhooo... so I watched episode 2, 3, and 4 of Just Add Magic, and it's still pretty good. But each episode after the pilot, I've noticed, borrows a spell from Charmed. For instance:
Episode 2: Knowledge spell
Episode 3: Lost-and-found spell (same outcome, too)
Episode 4: Truth spell (but there's no time limit for it)
Oh, and I rewrote a scene and replaced the characters with the Charmed characters. If you didn't know this, would you have guessed it wasn't from Charmed?
_____________
Phoebe: And do you wanna know another thing?
Piper: Not really, no.
Phoebe: I think you like to worry.
Piper: I don't like to worry, but there are a lot of things to worry about. So, I worry.
Phoebe: Every time someone sneezes, you call your mom to pick you up.
Piper: And that's why I've never gotten the flu. I never miss a day of school because of being sick.
Phoebe: How crazy is that? Sick days are the best. You get to sit around and watch cartoons. ALL. DAY! Beat You really need to lighten up.
Piper: *lightly chuckles* There's a lot I can say about you, Phoebe. But I'm not under a spell. So I'm going to keep my mouth shut.
Phoebe: Go ahead! Tell me whatever you want. I don't care.
Piper: *sarcastic smile You do not want me to do that.
Phoebe: Come on, don't be such a Willard Wembly.
Piper: gasps Fine! eats a truffle
Phoebe: smiles There you go. Now, don't you feel better?
Piper: still eating No, these truffles are really bitter.
Phoebe: Anything you wanna tell me?
Piper: Yes, I do worry a lot. About you!
Phoebe: Why me?
Piper: Because you never worry! You just do whatever you feel like.
Phoebe: It's called having fun.
Piper: groans No, it's called being irresponsible. If it wasn't for me, you'd never study, get to school on time, or remember to take your vitamin! Exhales By the way, did you take it?
Phoebe: *pulls it out of her pocket and takes it* Thanks.
someone knocks at the door
Piper: Come in!
door opens, and Darryl comes in
Darryl: Hey, girls! Prue says I can borrow her spiralizer.
Piper: Sure!
Phoebe: What's a spiralizer?
Darryl: finds it and picks it up This bad boy! I'm gonna turn zucchini into noodles.
Phoebe: flat voice It's still zucchini.
Darryl: sees the truffles Those truffles look good.
Phoebe: They're not as good as they look.
Darryl: Well, even a bad truffle is still a truffle.
Piper: *comes over to stand by Piper* Uh-uh, these are definitely bad for you. smiles innocently
they both smile
Darryl: suspicious Are you two all right?
Phoebe and Piper talk at the same time
Darryl: beat What's wrong?
Phoebe: We're under a magic spell.
Piper: And it makes us tell the truth.
Phoebe and Piper look at each other in shock, and then smile worriedly
Darryl: laughs, unsure of what's going on Hah, hah! Magic spell. Uh huh… so how'd that happen?
Phoebe: With the spell Prue found in the Book of Shadows.
Darryl: Okay, I'll buy it. The Book of Shadows?
Piper: Yeah, and it's so powerful we hide it in the attic on a stand.
Phoebe: We shouldn't have told you that, but, you know. Magic truth spell. Piper nods
Darryl: is still in disbelief If you guys didn't want me to have the truffle, you could've just said so. I'll see you guys later.
Darryl leaves
Phoebe and Piper wave goodbye
Piper: Oh, no! We just blabbed everything!
Phoebe: Not everything. I could've told him you still sleep with Mr. Snuffles.
Piper: completely deadpan How can you joke right now?
Phoebe: It's kinda my thing. Beat You really don't get me, do you?
Piper: Well, you don't get me either… sometimes I wonder how we even get along.
Phoebe: Me too… if it weren't for Prue, we probably wouldn't.
Piper: … Probably not.
In the second episode, Kelly color-coded the cookbook.
The book can turn the pages for plot convenience, just like the Book of Shadows (except that involves Grams.)
Episode 5: Angry spell, Singing spell, Attraction and Repel spell
Episode 6: Mental deaging spell
Episode 7: Telepathy spell
It can bring you closer together- or it can tear you apart. It’s up to you
She started using magic for her own personal gains
The book can tear us apart if we’re not careful
PS: As I'm writing this, I just heard the words "The Chosen Ones" and "The book" in the same sentence, I'm pretty sure. Hoooo boy...
Episode 8: Best Friend spell, Barrier spell, Counterspell to Best Friend spell
Episode 9: Do-Over spell
Episode 10: Memory spell, Cold spell
Episode 11: Path spell, Food-Tasting Better spell, Breaking Curse spell
If you fight the will of the book, you will lose.
The book is no longer yours to give. It will be someone else’s now.
“It’s our responsibility”
Episode 12: Identity Theft Spell, Breaking Curse spell
Episode 13: Protection spell, Unfreezing spell
The unfreezing spell- that's the one that the girls made. It reversed all the spells... and the show left off on a huge cliffhanger, too. Sadly, no season two yet!
I'm planning to do a review on it possibly tomorrow. We'll see.
And for the heck for it, I'll paste a parody of the Charmed opening here, just with the Just Add Magic characters instead. (I apologize for the quality, though. I had to use my stupid Hypercam because I couldn't find any download links to the episodes that were safe!)
I call it 'Just Add Charmed.'
drive.google.com/file/d/0B8Sk-z-_xS6YYVBydXJ3WktqcjA/view
So, what do you guys think? Is the show pretty similar, or slightly different? Has anyone over here seen it? If you haven't, I recommend checking it out. It's actually pretty darn good. As you can tell, I binge-watched it in less than a week or so!
