Shannen wasn't in it much because she was preparing to direct the season finale for 'All Hell Breaks Loose'. Why Prue is always not in the episodes much before the ones Shannen directed. The only way they could not be forced to do that is if Shannen directed the opening episodes to a season. That's a good point! I knew Shannen directed AHBL but didn't piece together that it would take time away from being in front of the camera in other episodes. She did a fantastic job on that so it's worth not seeing her very much in the previous episode. On top of that, it wasn't confirmed yet that she wasn't coming back for S4. So I totally that it's only her "second-to-last episode" in retrospect. Still, though. She deserved to be written out properly.

She was wonderful. The best moment was Piper dying on the hospital bed, might be the best scene in the entire series where a sister died. Wasn't that fond or cared for any time they died in later seasons when death became repetitive. But wouldn't this have been my favorite if Piper truly stayed dead? I agree with you on that, if only things went down better. *Sigh* Brad Kern But at least fans can write stories and do it all better.

Death had so much meaning in the early seasons with Andy and Piper (twice, haha), Mark and Charlene as ghost innocents, etc. Even the deaths of Prue's clones had more impact than the sisters' repeated deaths later on.

I agree, something I disliked about fantasy drama's they always use death as an excuse for shock and drama and think they can kill and resurrect so often because it is a fantasy show. I agree, in the earlier seasons, it felt more real because it was the first time. I felt so much shock when Phoebe died in Deja Vu before time reset, or Piper in Awakened because it was from natural causes. I even felt for many of the innocents too in the earlier seasons. Did anyone really feel sad for Piper in Kill Billie Vol 2? We all knew she'd get her family back. Imagine if that *was* the series finale.

It had more impact the first time(s) we saw it, partly because it's the first time but also because we're not sure they'll come back. Fantasy shows do tend to overdo it. Especially the longer they run. Shame to say but by the end of S8, I had long-since stopped sympathizing with the sisters. Even if we didn't know she'd get them back, I don't think I would've cared if the show did end that way.

Exactly right. Makes caring for the sisters in S4-S8 so hard. But with how much they were not likeable. You almost end up rooting for the bad guys to win. Lol

Apocalypse Not is easily the best penultimate episode. The sakes are good, all the sisters are great (even if Prue was largely out of the picture) and it features some of my favorite moments in the show. I also love the realization of Piper and Phoebe admitting their selfish desire to get Prue back since moments of self admittance are non existent in later seasons. One of my favorite scenes to this day is when Piper is in the car with Leo, sees one of the four horseman and instantly springs into action by chasing them. Coming from the Charmed One who's the most resistant in being a witch it didn't take away from her calling, its such a small, but subtle moment that I can't help but love, its such a shame Piper didn't get more moments like that.
It honestly felt more like the season finale than the actual finale. I can't really think of anything I didn't like it (from what I remember anyway) it also shows the sisters willing to give up Prue to save the world.

Apocalypse Not, I love that episode to bits.
Truly they should have just switched this with the S2 finale. I really felt this one was more season finale worthy, and the real S2 finale just didn't feel like a season finale to me, if you know what I mean.

When I see Apocalypse Not it makes me think about Supernatural some days and the times Sam or Dean died or were in trouble and the other did everything they could to get them back regardless of any consequences that may occur because neither could live without the other which the archangel Gabriel said best when posing as the Trickster that both men were their worst enemies.
I can just see season 2 end Charmed Ones screaming at them here if they stayed the way they were and both met years later exclaiming why Sam and Dean shouldn't be selfish then.

Piper chasing one of the 4 horseman down is one of my favorite scenes in the whole show, the chaos ensuing on a grand scale around San Francisco (never been that chaotic other than police being involved or in All Hell Breaks Loose) Prue also chasing them was great as well.
