Between the Avatars plot line, in which the sisters had paid no real price for their actions, and episodes like "The Seven Year Witch", I have no fond memories of Season Seven.

Thank you. If it were always going to be about the kids, it would have been that way from the start, wouldn't it? Phoebe would have read in the Book of Shadows in the first episode that three sisters would come along and one of them was the person destined to give birth to the world's most powerful person ever. The very foundation of the show was that these three sisters are the most powerful force of good the world has ever known. If one of their kids was going to be more powerful, the prophecy should have been about them. And sure, things can change along the way, but if the most basic premise of the show can change, then continuity means nothing. Having Wyatt so powerful and the focus shift to the next generation when the sisters were still in their prime reduced them to nothing more than vessels to give birth to other characters. A lot of seasons 5-8 feels like flashbacks of a show that stars Wyatt and Chris, like the sisters didn't once have their own lives and stories but were merely there to aid in the real story about the boys. They really, really should have ended Charmed after season 4 and at least renamed it to continue on, because the very concept of being The Charmed Ones and even sisterhood had next to no meaning once their kids started to come along. I hate to say this without proof, but I'm wondering if the actresses had some say in this very important change? For example, I understand that a show like Charmed needs plenty of "Man Candy", but it seems like that became Phoebe's exclusive focus in the latter seasons at the expense of the witchcraft stuff. And bear in mind, around this time shows like Sex and the City and Friends were extremely popular, so perhaps Alyssa Milano, already thinking about the next stage in her career, was behind the scenes encouraging the writers to give her as many romantic subplots as possible at the expense of the more witch related focus from the early seasons? She might have thought she was proving herself a viable actress in the romantic/comedy genre with her season long love affairs with Jason and Leslie, as, unlike her relationship with Cole, neither of those two love affairs had any connection whatsoever with the magical aspect of the show. And to draw a contrast, going back to season 1, in the "Feats of Clay" episode, we have Phoebe involved in a one episode romantic subplot with a hunky guy who is being hunted by the guardian of Egyptian urn. He has no magical powers at all, but he becomes Phoebe's innocent for that one episode which allows the show to supplement some romantic stuff with the more important witch aspect of the show. And that's how it should have been done IMO. I like romance too, but it can't be the major focus on a show like Charmed, having a character like Nick Lachey around just so Phoebe can constantly fall under a spell and repeatedly fondle him does nothing for me, if i wanted to see that kind of stuff i would just watch the Young and the Restless. You could very well be right. After all, after Charmed ended, she starred in a show called "Romantically Challenged". There was absolutely NOTHING romantic about it. The proper title was "SEXUALLY Challenged". I bored out after 3 episodes and it only lasted one season, if that long.

I had no idea about Romantically Challenged, or another show she did called "Mistresses", which I guess was a little more successful since she appeared in 26 episodes according to IMDB. I have seen a few reruns of "Who's the Boss" and nothing else (other than Charmed, of course) when it comes to judging Alyssa Milano's talent. She comes across as a decent actress in the dramatic episodes of Charmed, but so far I don't like her as much when she does comedy. For an example of her talent, I really liked her performance in "All Hell Breaks Loose". All the scenes with her have this morbid quality to them, almost as if she can sense death is stalking her sister, of course that might have just been the off-screen tension that existed between Doherty and Milano shining through lol. P.S. Thanks for the great response! I am having so much fun posting my thoughts about Charmed, this is definitely a great community of fans.

Yup, "Mistress" was a little more popular than "Romantically Challenged" - I never did watch any of that. I know she did some "Melrose Place", but again I never did watch any of it. Now "Who's the Boss?", I never missed! Totally loved that one, and especially Sam Micelli, played by Alyssa, just like I loved Holly as Kimberly Brock on 'Picket Fences'. It was seeing them in a preview for "Charmed" while I was watching my other favorite TheWB/Aaron Spelling show, "7th Heaven" that got me excited about Charmed. I'd never watched "Beverly Hills 90210" - I was in my 40s and not in the mood for teenaged angst - so I only knew her through the tabloids - which wasn't very good. I was very surprised when I discovered what a good actress she is, even if it took me a while to warm up to Prue, especially because Phoebs was my favorite sister right away and I hated how Prue treated her. But by the end of the first season, I loved all three of them. The last half of S1 and first half of S2 will always be my favorite "season" because it's the only time I love all three sisters. SOOO very glad that you're enjoying our community and so happy to have you part of it! It's amazing that we're still going strong even after this much time! Personally I still think that it's all the problems that keeps us coming back. If it was more consistent (especially that!), I truly think most of us would've gone on to other shows. But we have such fun describing what we don't like and how we would fix it without ever knocking someone because they don't agree with us (as I've seen happen at other sites...) that we just keep on keeping on! I LOVE when someone's watching the series for the first time and getting to watch it through their eyes!

I completely agree. Part of the reason I love those seasons is that the sisters seemed like real family who loved each other. I know it might sound a little corny/saccharine, but there is one episode in season 1 where Prue and Phoebe embrace after they help their innocent reunite with her mother, and it was such a beautiful moment in my eyes, maybe a little too "touched by an angel" for some, but there's no way such a moment would have been possible by season 3. And I'm not saying family's don't have strife, but to me it became pretty evident in season 3 that Doherty and Alyssa Milano couldn't stand each other, and it marred season 3 for me as a whole. For example, as recently as yesterday, I'm watching season 7 and all of a sudden Leo, the same person who has repeatedly saved the Charmed ones bacon over and over again for close to a decade, is deemed the "bad guy" for one entire episode. All the sisters start shooting daggers at him and asking Piper "how can u trust him", and i'm thinking, WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT???, he just saved their baby from evil magic school guy at the end of season 6, he started season 7 by hunting the fear demon who tried to hurt the baby as well, and now he's not trustworthy??? And then, by the end of the episode, everyone does this awkward shift by trusting the guy again lol.

Since during the original run, I was working Wednesday nights, and missed it most times. I love those moments. And you're right, moments like that do not exist in Season 3 and beyond, they are so rare. Once Kern took over in S3, it was no longer about three sisters who happened to be witches. But three witches, a Demon and a Whitelighter, or during S3 The Horrors and Lust Story of Phoebe and Cole, with the Poor Perils of Piper and Leo and Bitchy Prue.

I couldn't remember the episode. And yes, as I said yesterday this board is great. I have posted on a few sports boards in the past and they were nothing like this, no civility and just a bunch of internet tough guys slamming each other for having an opinion. Glad i got away from that garbage. I have heard about Brad Kern and his perceived negative influence on the show, and it's hard to deny that theory when his promotion to head producer of the show coincided with the show's quality taking a major nosedive. I still like many episodes between seasons 5 and 7 (i have only seen bits and pieces of season 8), but overall i think his legacy will be associated with unlikable characters, the non stop gimmick episodes, the poor exploration of other mythologies, and of course the oversexualization of the characters, especially Phoebe. P.S. On that last note i'm happy to say season 7 Phoebe seems to have finally gotten her eyes fixed (or perhaps Charmed hired a fashion consultant) because her clothes have stopped being hideous for the time being. Of course, because of how inconsistent Charmed is she will probably dust off her French spy/stripper outfit before long lol.

I don't have many fond memories of Charmed Season 7. I did enjoy "The Seven Year Witch" but mostly because I was glad to get a little more Julian McMahon. I love FBI: Most Wanted because of him and his character, btw.
I did like the way it ended. I really wanted to see that as the series finale. I don't have any moments in Season 8 that I enjoy so Season 7 tends to be where I stop if I'm doing a rewatch. That's if I can be bothered sitting through Season 5 and 6! Okay, so 6 is okayish, but Season 5 is where I really stopped enjoying the series.

Dunce cap back on Charmed, season 7. I just finished the "Charmageddon" episode, which i suppose acts as a mid-season finale for the storyline of the avatars, and I have to say Charmed couldn't have concluded this part of the story on a more asinine note. I watched anxiously as this storyline developed, hoping that Charmed would prove me wrong and we would get the payoff we so richly deserved after sitting through two seasons of Phoebe's pelvis and Piper's caterwauling...
But no, it was just another wasted opportunity for the writers (who, taking a page from the writers of shows like Lost and Heroes, clearly specialize in teasing big reveals that ultimately go nowhere), not to mention characters who at best would be described as fickle, at worst completely bonkers.
Can someone please explain why Leo, who was all gung ho about the Avatar's cause of re-writing the nature of human existence just one episode ago, would do a complete 180 degree turn in this episode? It's bad enough we have to watch him in his silly Matrix garb walking around with this solemn appearance, but then the writers make us dislike him even more by inexplicably having him become the Avatars biggest enemy?
And before anyone says, "he didn't want the avatars to play God", can we consider that the Elders, his former friends, have in the past used the Cleaners to wipe away people as well (including his son, not to mention the time they framed Darryl for murder). Also, as people who seemingly have fully functioning brains, both he and the Charmed ones should have known what "changing the nature of existence" entailed. Leo has almost a century of life experience, he has been a whitelighter, an elder and even lived through the trauma of World War 2. So why does he still display the naivety of a mixed up teenager??
Usually, i watch at least two or three episodes of Charmed in one sitting, but I was so cranky after this episode (not to mention the cheesy ending with Prue and Andy, oops, i mean Paige and Brody, having their heartfelt goodbye) i had to walk away. I will never trust you again, Charmed!! lol

Finally finished season 7 last night and overall, while it was an improvement over the atrocious seasons 5 & 6, it still left a lot to be desired.
Highs:
1) Phoebe is less obnoxious throughout the season, although I could almost sense Alyssa MIlano was not thrilled about the change in focus from Phoebe's dating life/career to the Avatars in the first half of the season after Leslie departs, as she seems to walk around with a glazed look in her eyes. Also, is it just me or does she look to have the same tension this season with Rose McGowan as she had with Shannen Doherty in season 3?
2) Less focus on the babies. Baby Wyatt is adorable, his little brother, less so. However, as babies neither Wyatt nor Ernest Borgnine are interesting as characters. I got so sick of seeing random demons in season 6 standing over Wyatt's crib attempting to steal the kid. Thankfully, aside from one or two episodes, the babies are downgraded in importance this season.
3) The Kira character is cute and sassy (without being obnoxious, see Grams) and steals the show in the one episode where she serves as the focal point. I almost wished the show was about her after seeing how much of a breath of fresh air she was in comparison to the Charmed ones.
4) Charmed Noir episode. This episode didn't further the overall season story arc at all, but it was a fun, cute episode. I really liked the chemistry Paige had with Agent Brody, what a shame the guy later proved that he was crazy. All for the sake of the pointless Avatar storyline.
5) The final two episodes of the season were strong. I really liked "Death becomes them", and the zombie return of Inspector Davidson. I thought it was great when he ripped Phoebe a new one for indirectly causing his death. That being said, the ending was predictably Charmed, with Piper using her powers to blow up the zombies. Yawn. The season finale was great. I also liked that it was only 42 minutes. Plenty of time to make an interesting story. Zankou was an interesting villain. The battle between his minions and the magical community was a laugh riot for me. I laughed so hard during that scene and especially loved it when he was turned into a pig. One of my favorite guilty pleasure scenes from Charmed.
Lows:
1) The avatar storyline. After being teased for WEEKS, as some kind of awesome force that was going to be a game changer on Charmed, the Avatars prove themselves to be nothing more than a time waster. As proof of this we have one entire episode which is ERASED from existence because of the consequences of Leo telling Piper about his Avatar identity. Yes, time was rewound in "All Hell Breaks Loose, but at least there was an emotional payoff in that episode, as Prue dies. Here there is nothing. And then, after seeing the utopia that would exist through her premonition power and pledging to work together to make it a reality, Phoebe, Leo and the others have a sudden change of heart and decide to thwart the Avatars. Characters constantly change motivations at the drop of hat on this show and it's so frustrating. Then, you would forgive me for expecting some kind of battle in an episode called "Charmeggedon", however, after being betrayed the avatars just decide to take their ball and go home without so much as a shot being fired at the Charmed ones. What a disappointment.
2) The Seven Year Witch. Why bother bringing back the Cole character if he wasn't going to share a single scene with Phoebe? And his character is used so poorly here, he's playing their spirit love guide? Huh? Also, the Elders continue to annoy on this show with their stupid kidnapping of Leo subplot. Can anyone tell me why these characters were created? They serve no purpose, other than acting as neglectful parents who appear every once in a while to lecture Leo/the Charmed ones about breaking some idiotic rule.
3) Random stupid scenes/lines. Baby Wyatt, the same kid that once conjured a dragon, now goes to a child daycare facility with other non-magical kids. Haha. Yeah, that's going to end well lol. In "death becomes them", Phoebe remarks that "it's just my luck" when the hunky guy she is flirting with is killed by a demon on the orders of Zankou. Classy as usual, Phoebe. In "Freaky Phoebe", Piper all of sudden starts making sarcastic comments about Phoebe's wardrobe, citing how inappropriate it is. Of course, this is just the writers reminding us how perceptive Piper is since she can sense something is off with her sister, who is being impersonated by a demon. Truth be told there was nothing "fake Phoebe" wore in that episode that would cause real Phoebe to bat an eye.
4) Agent Sheridan. More pointless than the Elders this season. She obviously took over Darryl's role as the go to person for the writers whenever someone non-magical needed to be physically abused.

But for me, I'd go from S5 (skipping lots of episodes in it) and jump straight to S7, and skip 6 & 8 on a re-watch. I saw at this Cafe, a great re-watch schedule someone posted, with watching the show by skipping certain parts of the series, and I'd so love to watch it that way one day.

I still like S7. I really enjoyed the Avatar storyline and Brody's involvement with it. Because without Brody's crazed involvement, the Avatars wouldn't have been as strong. I wanted to see more of Whitelighter Brody. Because of him becoming a Whitelighter got me thinking why Andy (from S1) couldn't have become a Whitelighter, as well. Andy was nothing but sacrificing himself to the greater good, but I digress.

I have a much better appreciation for S7 than I did. fifteen years sure will do that.
I really love Drake, Kyra and Zankou. All three added so much as supporting characters, I think they were better than a majority of characters we were introduced to during S5 and S6.
I loved Phoebe and Drake, and seeing them together, makes me wish he was a long-term love interest for Phoebe. I loved seeing Kyra as a demon who wants to be human.
Zankou was a great villain, and I wished he was their final villain. I really like SWTWG over FC as a final episode, if you can skip the ending for S7 with faking their deaths.
But prefer second half over first half.

I don't really like s7. Brody is so annoying and I know Paige didn't get the lesson on not punishing the guilty but she should have.

I don't really like s7. Brody is so annoying and I know Paige didn't get the lesson on not punishing the guilty but she should have. Screw that message. Honestly, I love Morality Bites and everything, but its lesson is a fallacious one. Just because they fling poop at the dog owner doesn't mean they're going to become murderers. That's not how any of this works. And, IK people want to throw in the whole "Hyde School Reunion" example, but the difference between Rick and Cal Greene is that the Charmed Ones didn't go out and hunt for Rick, the way Future Phoebe hunted for Cal Greene. Rick played stupid games and won a stupid prize. I'm not going to call the Charmed Ones "evil" nor "murderers" for setting up Rick to die. They didn't go hunting nor looking for a Chris substitute, as their first thought, in trying to get the Scabber demons off of Chris' trail. A lesson I think people forget is play stupid games, win stupid prizes which is exactly what Rick got. He's a powerless mortal who shouldn't be messing with things with powers. Something Darryl learned, the hard way and left SF, for his own safety.

When it first aired I felt such a contrast to season 5 and 6 which were so vibrant and colourful and out there really with ideas not all of it stuck but I had a lot of love for season 5 and 6 and thought 7 felt dour and try hard to be like the season 3 and 4 But actually I felt I was unfair on it and I compared it to Buffy which I should never do because charmed was it's own thing but I felt they tried going one way but still bad stories that felt left over from season 5 and 6 wackiness jarring with the darker 7 aesthetic BUT in time I've grown to love it a lot more on rewatched and it felt akin to season 1 tonally like a bookend season I also felt like for the first time all the sisters brought their a game too since season 4 ...like season 4 piper pushed herself but here she felt likeable , Phoebe also felt like she's over the trauma a bit and ready to embrace new things and wanted that explored even moreso , Paige was excellent as ever Love avatars so much and wished that freaky faces thing was something as I got fed up with human looking demons but still they were suitably ominous and Leo was brilliant here reeling from season 6 finale just such good writing Stakes were upped with Zankou too and the finale was just excellent
