A year before Charmed Season 6 started, Buffy had already did the addiction to magic with Willow. Did the writers rip Willow's storyline for Richard?
It's very similar.

That sort of plot was being use LONG before Buffy. It's a typical plotline slghtly twisted to ft the show, and Charmed is *not* the same as Buffy so just because a plotline line might remind you of a Buffy one does *not* mean it was "ripped" from Buffy.

I believe that the aedians travelling to the villages of the ancient Greece already told stories about the danger in handling great powers, the fables also warn of the risk of the misuse of the magic Both Buffy and Charmed have drawn to an ancient tradition, in Charmed this had already happened to Cole and Piper when she was a goddess: too much power would be a danger

Uh….chill? Relax? Chillax Buffy is not going to slay the Charmed Ones. They're goodish witches. Back to the rip-off question, I never got the impression that Richard’s addiction problem was ripped off from Willow’s addiction problem. Willow’s problem ultimately led her to become a very awesome tragic villain about to destroy the world. Richard’s problem felt like it came out of nowhere. I didn’t get the feel of him struggling with a problem and suddenly Phoebe’s acting all uneasy and suspicious around him. Paige is constantly berating him for using magic. And then he’s stripped his powers and joined Jason in the never-to-be-seen-or mentioned-again land. Which left me asking…why the heck were we watching this guy’s story? Why aren’t we seeing Future Wyatt and his obvious addiction to power after the trauma he went through with Gideon as a child? Why are we seeing Richard fixing the garbage disposal and giving Paige expensive gowns and dresses? Interestingly, Brain Drain of Charmed happened before Buffy’s Normal Again. So who knows? Maybe Joss did get inspired by that Charmed episode. Ofcourse he did one thing which Kern never did, Buffy’s dead mother appeared. We’re still waiting for Prue to appear….. But yeah the magic addiction plot with Richard, I got no rip-off vibes out of it. The two most in your face rip-off in Charmed I could think of at the moment is Prue going all Matrix on Vincent’s ass and *sigh*Magic School. Super-curious to hear what similarities you caught. Just because I'm not able to locate one I'm still interested to see the other perspective.

I was quite miffed myself why Richard was suddenly addicted to magic with no explaination whereas everyone knew with Willow because her girlfriend had been killed so you understood and sympthised with her more of course.

There is different types of addictions. Richards and Willows were different.
Willow use of Magic began to change and destroy her. She began to use magic as a way to relieve her pain rather than dealing with it.
Richard however remained the same he just couldn't live without magic. However given he was born with Magic and that was who he was majority of his life he wasn't really an addict. He was just having a hard time adjusting to not using Magic for everything like he was used to before meeting Paige.
Richard was never really an addict at all. The sisters didn't understand Richard because majority of their lives at this point they were normal and didn't have magic. They didn't grow up with it like Richard did. Magic was a part of Richard and it wasn't bad for him to use it as he wanted or how often he wanted. Richard wasn't an addict be any means.

I don't think these addictions were the same, like it was said before. Richard had magic all his life but didn't practice it after Olivia's death. Yet when the feud ended or he felt guilty when Phoebe was Mata Hari, and so he started again. Unfortunately.

I know how you feel. Another dropped storyline. I guess you could say it was like an addiction storyline and no matter what the junkie couldn't become clean.
