Ok....So Ive made no secret of the fact that I am a huge fan of Julian McMahon. But I never understood his sex appeal.
Dont get me wrong. I understand why women find him sexy. He is a good looking dude. But women who know who he is swoon over him the way they do over Brad Pitt and Heath Ledger. And I dont think he is anywhere near as sexy as those guys.
I understand that I am speaking from the perspective of a straight male here. So thats why I am asking the ladies. What is it that makes women go nuts for him? The only thing I can think of is that he has a sort of smooth way of carrying himself.

I've always preferred Brian during the Charmed days. I went gaga over Julian during Season 3, but by Season 4 and he was WHATEVER by the power of the Source, he no longer seemed that good-looking and I was bored with him, the same way I think Holly was her most beautiful in Season 6-8 when Piper was her most ugly due to the change in her personality. Ditto for Alyssa and Phoebe in S4-8. I always loved that Phoebe was her ugliest during her dark wedding to Cole, what I count as the low point of the series - the Power of Three should've died that day if it didn't when Phoebe lied to her sisters about vanquishing Cole. For me, it never rose to the levels it had reached before after that moment, probably because it was no longer the show I love. I went gaga over both Billy Zane and Oded Fehr much more than Julian, while I still count my full Charmed name as Esmeralda Wyatt, never Esmeralda Halliwell or Esmeralda Turner, since if Piper didn't want the angel enough to take his name, I did - and I wouldn't have turned him into a wimpy mortal. |

I'm assuming you're referring to young Julian, since he's recently become a face for plastic surgery DON'Ts.
Basically: I'm a fan of the old-school Hollywood + modern telenovela ideas of male beauty and sex appeal. All current 'heartthrobs' in movies are either outright ugly/plain/have weird features, or have a sexless energy even when they do look good (think Clooney). It's been like this for decades. But I can still find my idea of hotties in TV. All 3 mentioned here: Billy Zane, Oded Fehr and Julian fit that criteria for me. And they're all sexy in their own distinct ways (with a slight edge given to Oded because of his intelligent presence, but it's a VERY close call).
With Julian it's quite simple actually: he's the rare guy with a typically masculine body shape + overconfident comportment that you will see outside of dumb action flicks. I don't mean the bulked up kind of body you see everywhere: I mean with the natural combo of broad shoulders, thin waist and impressive height. And he had a model face and dazzling smile on top of it. He also had an intensely sexual energy - and that's something not necessarily tied to beauty. Basically, he succeeded on the scarcity of actors with his specific type of looks + presence in the type of fare that women watch. It really made him stand out back then. Unfortunately he aged spectacularly quickly after Charmed, but therein lies the magic of the camera - it freezes time like Piper :-)

And the worst part is that as his looks deteriorated - his personality seemed to go with it. In interviews and behind-the-scenes he went from hyper-actively charming when young to oily, vulgar and arrogant later on. Hence I refer to him as Julian no.1 and Julian no.2 depending on age.

From what I can see from his earlier pics + 1 godawful 90s indie feature, Julian was actually at his hottest before we saw him on Charmed - under 30 y.o.

And sure they're good looking, they look good in a suit, they're confident and charming and...that's it. For Julian it didn't end there. He had this...I could only describe as a visually powerful commanding and dominating presence. Think Don Draper from Mad Men. Kevin Spacey in Horrible Bosses or House of Cards. Lord Tywin Lannister and Khal Drogo in Games of Thrones. Even Wes Ramsey pulls it off somewhat as Evil Wyatt in Chris Crossed. And Oded Fehr got a bit of that in the department playing Zankou. But this power they seem to be exuding in their roles, that to me sort of blows away Brad Pitt and Health Ledger, even if they're indeed visually a bit better looking than some of these actors. Another thing is Brad, Heath, Tom, their faces, eyes, they way they smile, no matter what role they play, no matter how hunky they get, they still remind me of childhood and innocence, laughter and fun with friends and families, games and playing prank on people. But Julian neither as Cole nor as Christian in Nip Tuck ever made me think of those things. Rather the opposite, not so innocent adult fan fiction type material kind of thoughts. Too bad we never saw Oded Fehr and Julian together on Charmed. Brian's chemistry with him was alright...but Cole and Zankou? Their chemistry could've been the forget about Phoebe and make-out with each other already level. |

Exactly. You felt like you needed a shower from looking at him. 50s movie stars possessed this kind of explosive eroticism in both sexes, but it went out of fashion with the sexual revolution because you no longer needed to code sex to get past censorship. Julian was born in the wrong time period.
I actually don't dig this sort of hyper-masculine presence in actors as a rule. JM's an exception that proves that rule for me. I'm irked by it as a feminist - it just makes me think of sociopathy and the evil this sort of men inflict on our world everyday. I can't stand Jon Hamm for example.

I can't get over the coincidence of Roma Maffia and JM being regulars on both Profiler and Nip/Tuck. They shared the same set every day for a total of 11 years!!!

Cole was already too pre-occupied with trying to NOT make-out with another man on another show to pencil Zankou into his schedule :-))) Back to the fleeting nature of JM's sex appeal: he landed Nip/Tuck not a moment too soon, as it all fizzled out soon after. Had the pilot been commissioned just 2 years later, that role would've gone to someone aging better and Hispanic like it was originally scripted (Raymond Cruz would've been my pick, although the show is beneath him). Of the entire series, i was more Gaga over Dan than any other support character on Charmed.
But my Mom surely did love Julian McMahon and she started watching the show in Season 3 through to about Cat House...
Once he left, she wasn't interested anymore.

JM still has that commanding presence today - long after the sexiness drained out of it. I saw it on Dirk Gently's.
The other thing I can think of is that his smile is truly incredible. It's like his whole face smiles - he doesn't look like the same person with a straight face.

I can't help but wonder if it was Julian or Cole that's the draw just like in Twilight. People seem to forget/mix up the two and that most actors are very different from the roles they play.
If we're talking about Cole then I'd say it was the dark, danger and mystery that surrounded him and the ever drawing through of 'i think I can save him/ I think I'm the one that could change him.' He also wasn't afraid to go after what he wanted and for ME personally, that IS a draw.
With Julian.... I don't really know. After all, I never met the guy and haven't seen him in to many things or interviews for that matter. The only other thing I ever saw him in was "Nip Tuck" and he kind of reminded me of Cole there to in a round about way. So all I can really go on there is looks and maybe why that IS a thing.
YES, he IS handsome in the 'tall, dark and handsome' kind of way and in some photo's I find something in the eyes draws me in but NOT all. Blue eyes also seem to be a huge draw for a lot of women and the fact he's toned but not over toned is also another thing I myself like in a guy. Still, in saying that he was never one to make me swoon. Though full disclosure only two actors have EVER made me do that via looks alone so.... take from that what you will.
Quite frankly I was always a Leo, Drake or Coop kinda girl.
Hopeless romantics, all very kind and caring and thats what I look for. Looks fade after all and it's true you can't judge a book by it's cover.
However, it's also each to their own.
