Every time I watch this episode I just love how intense and dark the theme was. It always felt like a totally different kind of charmed episode. Like it was the same actresses but like in a different alternate reality. It was actually borderline scary for me the very first time I watched it years ago. I always felt like I was watching a twilight Zone or Outer limits episode late at night by myself or a Friday the 13th movie. I so wish they kept the theme of the series like this episode. The same way I felt with episodes like “Is there a Woogy in the House”. “The Wendigo””The Witch is Back””The Power of Two” and “dejavu all over again”
I wonder if the writers felt they were being too dark in season 1 and were told to lighten things up?

That's true the writers who wrote many of those episodes left after S1. Edithe Swensen, Tony Blake & Paul Jackson all wrote many of the episodes that felt a little dark. S2 is much lighter.
S1 felt so different, and I know people say S3 and S4 were dark, but S1 had a feel of darkness to it, but it was different than S3 or S4.
When I watch Season 1, It does feel scary at times. I know when I first watched Season 1 at aged 11 or 12, being a little freaked out by a few episodes.

Anyone rewatch this for Friday the 13th? I know I did. I also forgot Ms. Hellfire was too. So I might watch that later.
Does anyone sometimes feel like Piper on Friday the 13th. I know I get nervous and wanting to get home safely. Because I did get many bad luck things happen to me one year out of nowhere.
Barbas was great in his original episode. I just wished he wasn't overused later. I could accept him in a trilogy of episodes.

Well, I'm one who does not like scary - I get nightmares. I refuse to watch slasher movies or other such stuff. But as usual, I know that I'm an exception to most fans when it comes to Charmed, partially due to my age.
A number of S1 episodes still give me nightmares.
None of the S2-8 ones do.
That should tell you plenty right there.

And that's probably why I like rewatching Seasons 3 and 4, albeit, I don't think they are the best Seasons compared to 1 and 2. I do like the darkness of Season1 and the lightness of Season2. I also remember being about 13 and my sister only being 9 and watching Charmed for the scary factor too. I remember scaring my little sister after Dream Sorcerer whispering "I'm in your dreamssssss" hahahhah got in so much trouble!

S1 and S2 have the benefit of still having the sisters based off Connie's vision. I'd imagine S3 and S4 would be much better under hers not Brad Kerns. S2 and S5 may be the lightest seasons. Actually S5 only felt less light in episodes 4-12. But the rest had a tone like S2. I remember having the Dream Sorcerer haunting me in my dreams once. Not good. Haha

Back when was a teenager and younger, 3 and S4 were my most loved seasons but now I see S1 and S2 were better written. I think I just preferred Charmed when it was just standalones. I guess your prospective changes when your the same age or older than the characters and are not looking up or went through life experiences like the sisters. My younger sister also watched Charmed too and was about 8 or 9 too. Funny she wasn't freaked out by some of the scary episodes. She found Buffy or Angel to be more scary than Charmed and couldn't watch some. Liking the lighter episodes more.

I like rewatching Season 3 and 4 because it appears more action oriented and refined, like the special effects are better and to get new viewers into the show, 3x01 is an easy place to start. That being said, the quality of the stand alone episodes in Season 1 and 2 are exceptional and even the arcs are interesting. I didn't mind Piper-Leo-Dan and I really enjoyed Andy-Secret-Prue and Hannah-Rex-Charmed Ones. I feel that they over-hired Julian McMahon and that he actually did too good of a job and the chemistry with Prue and Phoebe was just too good for him to leave when he was supposed to in Sleuthing. It then became more serial because and the character of Cole became almost as interesting as one of the sisters. Unlike Leo, who was interesting, but he never knocked Prue Piper or Phoebe out of the limelight... until Season 6 i guess. Its really just strange when you think back to how it could have gone and I wonder if all the on-screen arguments started when Julian arrived. I guess it didn't help that they were all dating each other off and on screen either I guess. Back to this post - this episode is great, but I kinda wish Barbus did stay dead as he is only supposed to come around once ever 1300 years right? not ever 13 episodes! Good way to use Friday 13th though.

Yeah, had Cole stayed vanquished after 'Sleuthing', just think of the differences...Phoebe and Cole's love story would've been one of my favorite storylines rather than their obsession story being my least-favorite, the way Piper and Leo's love story might have been my actual favorite storyline had Leo stayed gone after 'Love Hurts'.
But by that point in S3, Phoebe and Cole were the "IT" couple that all the fans were interested in, and especially with The WB knowing that Buffy was going to jump ship to UPN after that season, well, they had to keep that relationship going.
A similar thing happened in S6 where fans went nutzoid over Cutie Pie Drew Fuller and/or curious over his backstory, so when Kern found out that Holly was pregnant, he rewrote "ChrisCrossed", Chris' original last episode. Had he remained the bad guy he so obviously is before that episode (which is why fans have had to come up with fanfics that shows why he acted that way...), I'll always wonder what that episode would've been like.

Good way to use Friday 13th though. I see what you mean by S3 and S4 like that. I did think the smaller storyarcs of S1 and S2 were better than the later season ones. Yeah Cole really did take so much spotlight. He really overstayed his welcome. I never thought this when I originally watched. But now looking back maybe Cole's story was better with him dead in Sleuthing. Perhaps they could extend it out a little longer but ending it in a similar result to Sleuthing only Cole is vanquished. Yeah it didn't help that Shannen and Alyssa were dating Julian and Brian at the time. Makes me always wonder how it would go if Prue and Cole were an item in S3 instead. Would they have fired Shannen at the risk of destroying their Cole arc. I feel not. Yeah they really did go overboard with Barbas. He'd make a good one time villain. Love him but his other appearances were not as great as his first. S6 and S7 just were way overdone. I was hoping his third and last appearance in S5 would be last when originally airing.

Season 1 had a darkness that seemed more mysterious, creepy and realistic, which was very effective. Such a shame they didn't keep that and went more over-the-top.
