The Book of Shadows had protection so why didnt the house? I find it kind of crazy they couldnt cast a spell to keep demons out.

I've always thought that it did, in a way. Not like the Book obviously, but in how demons or warlocks didn't just shimmer or blink in and stab them in their sleep or something. But maybe that was more about having heightened instincts if something was wrong, like how Prue woke up right before the demon could smother her with the pillow.
I know that if I were living in that house, I wouldn't be able to relax without putting some kind of protection spell on the house, though.

There were times when the sisters placed pyrite crystals around certain rooms in the house like the Lounge, Attic etc to keep evil out. And Grams did it once too if I remember rightly.
