Shannen Doherty Says Luke Perry's 'Biggest Accomplishment' Was His Children: 'They Were His Heart'

Shannen Doherty is being comforted by Sarah Michelle Gellar in the wake of Luke Perry’s death. Perry died aged 52 after suffering a ‘massive stroke’. Doherty played Brenda alongside Perry as Dylan in the 90s teen drama Beverly Hills 90210. A reboot starring some of the original cast was recently announced. The devastated actress is being supported by the Buffy The Vampire Slayer star following the news.

Just a day before Perry died Shannen spoke publicly about how heartbroken she was to hear he had suffered a stroke. Speaking at The Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation’s Compassion Project Gala in Los Angeles on Sunday, just a day before Perry died, she said: ‘I can’t talk about it here ’cause I will literally start crying but I love him and he knows I love him.

‘It’s Luke, and he’s my Dylan’.

Luke died on Monday at St Joseph’s Hospital in Burbank, with a statement to Metro.co.uk confirming he passed away surrounded by his family and close friends.

Shannen Doherty is devastated over the loss of her castmate and friend Luke Perry.



“I am in shock. Heartbroken. Devastated by the loss of my friend. I have so many memories with Luke that make me smile and that are forever imprinted on my heart and mind,” Doherty, 47, exclusively tells PEOPLE about Perry, who died Monday at age 52 after suffering a massive stroke days earlier.



Doherty starred alongside Perry on Beverly Hills, 90210 for years — the actress as Brenda Walsh and Perry as Dylan McKay (he appeared from 1990-95 and again in 1998 until 2000).



Although the costars drifted apart when the show went off the air, they reconnected after Doherty went public with her breast cancer diagnosis in 2015.

“Luke was a smart, quiet, humble and complex man with a heart of gold and never-ending well of integrity and love. Luke reached out to me during my cancer journey and we picked right back up, albeit older and wiser, but that connection remained in tact,” says Doherty, who opened up about being in remission in September.



Although the duo wasn’t signed on to return for the upcoming Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot alongside their original castmates, both Doherty and Perry hoped to work together again on “something special and meaningful” for fans.



“There is a special kind of love one has for each other when you are experiencing the journey we did on 90210 and of course life in general. Luke and I were working on show ideas for us. We wanted to work with each other again and create something special and meaningful for our fans at this stage in our lives,” shares Doherty. “I will miss him everyday. Every minute. Every second.”

It is really sad to hear about Luke's passing but also nice to see the many comments people having being leaving about him including their memories or working with him those who did.

The Riverdale set shut down soon as the news came out which is a nice gesture too.

I never saw "Beverly Hills 90210". But I did see Luke Perry in the original "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie from 1998. I really liked his performance as Pike in it.

I saw Luke in the original Buffy film to and own the DVD in fact.

I also remember his guest stint in the Simpson's as Krusty's half brother.

I've heard good things about Luke Perry. A sad loss.

It is too bad that Luke and Shannen never got to act together again since the early 90s. I remember some people wishing Luke was on Charmed in a one-off episode getting to work with Shannen again. I'd have at least gotten to witness that amazing chemistry people speak so much about with them.

From stuff I've read, he really spoke so fondly of Shannen. So nice she had someone from her past shows she kept in contact with and never had a falling out with.

52, that is very young to die of a stroke. But not uncommon, I have heard of people as young as 30 dying of strokes. So people need to know the warning signs early.

I'm glad Luke was such a good friend to Shannen. I've heard stories about Luke being such a stand-up guy. But I've never seen 90210 or Riverdale that he is famous for.

Its always so sad to see things like this. I've only ever seen him in a few episodes of Riverdale when my sister watched it, but I've heard good things about him and its really sad that Shannen lost a good friend on top of everything she's gone through lately. I hope he lived a fulfilling life- full of friendship and love.
