After watching through Season 2 again I've come to appreciate this season even moreso during rewatches. Primary reasons are because it has cricial strengths people don't give it credit for and how at its peak the sister dynamic was. I want to get out of the way, this excludes any love triangle stuff as its pretty much a blemish on what is otherwise Charmed at its best. What I liked about Season 2 was how much it emphasizes each core component of Charmed's then focus and spliced them throughout the season
-Character chemistry
-Sister Spotlight
-Monsters of the Week
-Innocents
-Balance
These core elements made Season 2 so strong. With character chemistry Alyssa, Shannen and Holly all had their characters down so they were able to express more of that sisterly chemistry. I mean even when the season starts you get a fresh take on their characters, Alyssa gives Phoebe this more expressive and high spirited person always ready for the action. Any scene where Phoebe connects with an innocent or is ready to make a potion (one of my favorite examples of the latter being her preparing for Masselin in The Devil's Music) Piper (when she's not stuck in love triangle mode) normal life relatability. The one scene that sticks out to me was her line at the end of 2x17 "I'm still hesitant in being a witch, for all the reasons we discussed, but I'm only going to quit if and when you guys want to also" to me this line makes Piper the mundane seeker that's in many supernatural shows, she never let it dictate her judgement or force it onto others. Even her sarcasm was on point even having some of my favorite lines this season ( Ugh it tastes like a$$ from Chick Flick for instance) as well as having two great episodes. Prue I like because she got the chance to open up her shell more, she wasn't afraid to open up to others and was less cold, seeing vulnerability.
Like Andy being a factor for Prue in Witch Trial and Murphy's Luck. Secondly my favorite component had to have been monsters of the week. I like how Charmed chose to have monsters with actual creature designs, Abraxas being one of my favorites in the show. But more importantly I liked how each "monster" wasn't a typical big bad, they came packaged with a message or bigger issue for the girls to face. For instance in Awakened the monster was illness itself, and considering 2020 this easily resonates hard to the point magic can't fight it. Or how Murphy's Luck used a Darklighter as a suicide metaphor. Or even Dr Williamson representing self corruption and self defeat with having powers he wasn't meant to have. Even Chick Flick was just a lot of fun without stuff like this, or the Water Demon in P3 H20 relating to fear of losing someone etc. Charmed should've had more stuff like this.
Innocents were also something Charmed missed, and when they were around they weren't as much of a focus rarely. In early seasons I missed innocents having their own stories to coexist with the sisters. And season 2 has among my favorites, weather its Phoebe and Eric's interactions (along with the Cupid) or Maggie Murphy and her bad luck story arc, but the strongest to me has to have been Ex Libris, the scene where Prue helps the man is very much what I come to love about them and how even Charlene ties into it at the end.
These three dynamics each sister faced is argubly the most in the show. At least as far as being relatable goes. Compare this to where all they faced later was Phoebe losing a date, working or her powers or Piper and Leo losing and gaining each other over again. While Paige sorta did her own thing. It always felt like the show was making progress with this. What do you guys think?
