I was thinking today about the progression of Piper's power throughout the show. I think it is the perfect example of contradicting the idea that their powers were supposed to progress not grow at random.
Would it have been better if Piper had of started with the ability to slow time? The original powers could be the ability to move things with their mind, slow time and see the future.
If she had started with the ability to slow time we could see Piper do things we actually saw her do (sortof). There are several times in the show where it looks like Piper is "slowing things down" when a demon is strong and won't completely freeze - they fight through and out of it (Pardon My Past).
By season three Piper could have gained more control over her power and could then fully freeze things (still not upper level demons). Piper didn't need an offensive power while Prue/Paige were around because they filled that role in the power of three.
Finally, Piper could be given the power to speed things up. The explanation for this power would be that Piper is moving people through time so fast that they combust. I know some may argue that this doesn't make sense, but when you really think about it the explanation of Piper's powers in the show didn't make sense. I think this explanation makes the same level of sense, in my head anyway.
I think she should have gotten this power around mid season five with the reasoning that she needed an offensive power to protect her kids when her sisters weren't around. It could also be a "reward" of sorts for them accepting Paige and reconstituting the power of three.
This theory attempts to make a version of Piper's powers that would have been a progression, instead of Piper getting the most powerful forms at the opposite ends of her canon "power explanation" of being able to slow/stop molecules and speed/combust molecules without ever any control over the in between space.
