Rewatching the ep, what makes the time travel wonky is that the page to vanquish Nicholas was missing during the scene where they first take on Nicholas. If they had been in a loop why wasn't it there?
In morality bites, the sisters are in a loop as they try to find to rewind spell and conclude that the page is missing, because their future selves already used it.
Also when they do back in time, they warn grams and Patty about Nicholas. So what happened when he showed up that night? Did he just leave when the charmed ones headed to the future or did they ward him off?
The last point I want to make is that Nicholas wasn't a power of three spell. Prue was able to vanquish on his own in season 2. So why didn't grams of patty try to take him out during the years leading up to the encounter in that 70s ep?
If it was meant to be a power of three spell, why didn't grams in her infante wisdom warn the girls that Nick will attack, get them prepared and when he drops off the flowers have them vanquish him before he realizes that they regained their powers now?

I wish I had an answer for you that made sense. I think the show often changed the rules of time travel, especially when it comes to having memory of said time travel. It seemed to be a default that no one would ever remember except people remembered all the time. For example - in "Forever Charmed" old Piper and Leo say they remember being in current day (Holly and Brian) places... And it's like - how could you remember it if it hadn't happened yet? At the end of the day I just sortof accept that it's a show about magic so you have to throw logic out the window a little bit. Time travel as a concept in general is usually a plot hole. The ONLY explanation I've heard that makes sense is that the epilogue in "Forever Charmed" was a part two to "Brain Drain" - Piper was a delusional elderly woman who made up a fantasy in her head about magic that she believed was real. This is the only way to explain all the inconsistencies

Or that she's been in a coma since 'All Hell Breaks Loose' and S4-8 is just her delusions until she comes out of it in the finale. It would've been fun if there had been no pictures of Paige, Wyatt or Chris on the wall, just Piper and Leo with Melinda from 'Morality Bites', Phoebe and Cole (childless...) and Prue. Now there's how another one of my Dream Charmeds would end.

I tend to not think about the gritty details, too much. You'll only ruin the show, for yourself. This episode isn't really one of my preferred episodes, anyway.
