Hey all. I wanted to let you all know about some really awful things that have been going on in my province of Nova Scotia.
I will post some articles, but in short: We have Indigenous populations to Canada that are native to this land, much like Native American's in the USA. Hundreds of years ago the European settlers reached an agreement with the Indigenous peoples. It is very unfair to Indigenous people.
One of the few things Indigenous folks got out of this deal was the right to fish and hunt on their land (we call them reserves here) year round without a fishing or hunting license. These Indigenous communities fish lobster, trout, etc whenever they want. They do not do this for commercial success - it's literally to feed their families and communities.
There has been trouble with a group of white supremacists who are terrorizing the Indigenous fishers. In the past week these white folks have burnt down 2 lobster pounds and set fire to someones van. They also trapped a group of Indigenous people in a building and threw paint thinner and gasoline through the windows with the intention of burning the building down while they were in it. Our police are doing NOTHING to stop it - there has been no arrests - NOTHING. There is several people in the hospital with life threatening burn injuries. Our government hasn't done anything besides tweet about it. Indigenous communities here are very poor and isolated. Many reserves don't have grocery stores - they are food deserts. These populations who live on reserve rely on fishing, hunting and gathering to feed themselves. It is their traditional way of life. They have not fought back or done anything in retaliation, they've only begged the police and our government to help them. I am distraught over all of this.
Nova Scotia is very small. The population is 971,395 and 51,495 of those people are Indigenous communities. The white fisherman that are bringing violence to them have multi-million dollar commercial fishing capabilities. They fish for commercial profit - it is a business. Indigenous people pose NO adverse risk to their fishing business because it is done so so small scale. Indigenous fisher people are only allowed 50 traps and white people are allowed limitless traps. Again - the law is Indigenous folks are allowed to fish whenever for a moderate livelihood NOT commercial profit. These people literally go out on small family owned boats and do everything by hand. They don't have large vessels, nets or traps (the kind that devastate the oceans ecosystem).
So please send your thoughts, prayers, healing energy (whatever faith you follow) to us at this time. Our Indigenous peoples are so peaceful and kind. It is breaking my heart how they are being terrorized, hurt, and having their livelihoods put at risk.
