I think season four's finale, Witch Way Now, could have acted as the perfect ending to the series. The sisters have finally finished mourning Prue's death, vanquished their greatest enemy and weakened the entire demonic world as a result, Paige feels accepted and they have a bright future ahead of them with Piper's baby on the way.
Not that the next few seasons didn't have a handful of great episodes, but a lot of what happened dampened the better years. Here you have the sisters in a secure place, sticking together without getting bitter.
It would have been a great ending.

This episode would definitely work as a series finale. There was so much that was different at this point on that it felt like a different show: Holly and Alyssa became producers, the series had a lighter overall feel with more silliness, the sisters felt more like friends or acquaintances, there was much more of a focus on children, Phoebe and Paige were constantly moving in and out, Leo's role had much less stability, continuity rules were broken at a greater frequency, and on and on.
Based off of what I knew from just seasons 1-4, I would have never predicted how the rest of the show actually turned out. Witch Way Now felt like it was setting us up for a much different future. I'd definitely prefer to have half the show we got and still be able to hold my expectations high for what it might have been.

I'd have been fine if it did end here, if it did, maybe I'll love the whole series, without S5-S8 happening, and were things just got worse to the characters.
I think this would have worked as a series finale. The only part I'd hate is the Angel telling the sisters that Piper is pregnant, and I'd rather the Angel of Destiny not close the Manor Door, so Leo can get unfrozen and be told the news too. It's sad, we missed that moment of him learning it.
But, I'd be happy if it ended here, and wonder what became of them, as I doubt any of us would have predicted anything that S5-S8 had. It would be interesting to wonder, just what stories fans would write in fanfiction, if it ended at 4, in showing what happened next. I'll bet most would think Piper would have a daughter, and Paige never would have quit her job.
Interesting, I do wonder how Paige would be viewed/received with only being in one season, and the last. It did take people a while to grow and warm up to her. How differently would it be, if we only knew/saw her from just one season and the last. I loved her in S4, but I do wonder how we'd all react if we we'd just only known her as the new sister who came in the final season, looking back at the show years later if Charmed only lasted four seasons.

No. No, it would not have been a perfect finale. As long as the sisters never knew the truth about how Cole became the Source, it was incomplete. And since they never learned the truth . . . as far as I'm concerned, they never really grew as characters.

But arguably still more acceptable than what we got. Piper and Phoebe still somewhat resembled the two sisters we know. By Season 8, they were unrecognisable. And if they thought Season 4 was going to be there last, maybe they'd have given Cole and Phoebe's more finality. I doubt they'd have gone the route we'd have wanted but perhaps it wouldn't have ended with Phoebe suddenly becoming some kind of hater.

Me, I'd still prefer 'Something Wicca This Way Goes' as the finale over this one.
I wish they'd skipped the Cole-the-Source storyline and instead used the Zankou storyline (with Cole taking Brody's role, so no 'Seven Year Witch'- I LOVE the idea of Cole becoming a half-whitelighter/half-demon - this also means no Wyatt and no Chris! YES! And no Billie and Christy! YES! And most important of all, no Stalker Cole who what part of "NO!" he doesn't understand! YES! No ruining ANY of their characters!) as the finale.
I think that would've made a much better ending than either this one or 'Forever Piper', I mean 'Forever Crap', I mean 'Forever Charmed', especially if it ended the way it would've had it been the finale as it would've if Charmed hadn't been renewed at the last moment (DON'T I WISH!) where Phoebe says, "Here we go!" KA-BOOM!! THE END!
That would set up the possibility of a Charmed movie or a reboot with the Halliwells rather than whoever the rip-off ones are. In the meantime, each fan can figure out her own ending...just imagine all of the wonderful fanfics we could've had with no need to include a Twice-Blessed Brat or a lying, whining, murdering brat from the future or their sister or all of their 6 cousins! YES!

In my head, this is the series finale. Of course, I'm well aware that there are further seasons but I just can't picture them in the same universe as the first four. It's not perfect and the episode itself is rather lackluster, but it led to a satisfying conclusion and you get a picture where each of the characters might end up in your own imagination.
