The Fashion and Hair of Charmed

When it comes to Charmed, the fashion and the hair are definitely one thing that sticks out. Most notably the evolution for some of them (Prue/Phoebe). What are some of your favorite outfits/hair-dos, least favorite outfits/hair-dos.

Did you like how the fashion evolved for each other? Did Charmed end up focusing to much on the "sexy" look?

I think my overall favourite fashion styles for the sisters is in season one. Everything was on point then. Overall, season one-three Phoebe's looks are my favourite. And in season four, to a degree.

But from that point on, I'm not really too much of a fan, especially compared to how much I loved her look in the earlier seasons. A lot of this is down to how they leaned way way way too much on the sexy look in later seasons, and of course then there's when she cut her hair.

Piper's evolution of her clothing (and hair because I adore her long beautiful hair) is my favourite, up to a point, and then I don't really have much opinions on it. I don't hate it, and I don't necessarily not like it, it's just 'meh' to me for the most part, although there's some looks that are just amazing. Season one, four and five are my favourite Piper seasons for her fashion.

I don't have too much of an opinion on Prue's evolution, because I don't really think it changes too much, personally. But I like for the most part her fashion. I don't have strong feelings towards it, like I do Phoebe's, and to a lesser degree, Piper's, but that's good because it means I don't actually have anything negative to say about it. Ms Hellfire Prue is one of my favourites, however, I know that.

Paige's fashion is where I have the most complex of feelings, because when her outfit was good, she looked amazing, but unlike the other sisters who, even when their clothing wasn't good, still looked okay, whereas often with Paige, for her bad outfits, I'm left wondering what was they thinking. However, her hair evolution is my absolute favourite. (Second is Piper's, even though it didn't change much because I love her hair so much, then Phoebe season 1-3, and early season four and late season eight, and then unfortunately by default, Prue's).

However, I truly do think 100% that they leaned way too much on the sexy look. Which I think is a real shame, because the sisters looked their sexiest when that wasn't the aim, or at least not the focus. For instance, the first pictures for Phoebe and Paige are great examples of this (although this is more when it's not the focus, because it's still probably the aim), and the fifth picture of Piper, and the second picture of Prue. I think leaning on the sexy look showed up how stupid the look-who-they've-turned-into plots were even more, which is another shame because brilliant costumes could've been a redeeming factor.

I think Prues definitely changed between S1 and S2/3. S1 she had a very serious look compared to how laid back she was with her clothing come S2. Though I think her sweather/cote/hair combo in the start of Sight Unseen is probably my least Prue look and just didnt seem like her.

Yeah, upon reflection, I agree that Prue's definitely changed between S1 and S2. So I guess my updated opinion on how Prue's fashion evolved would still be favourable, because I like how she looks in S2-3, and I do think that had her look stayed as it was in season one that I might've not liked it overall as much. Although I can't be certain, because I very much liked how she looked in season one. And yeah, I agree with you about how she looked at the start of Sight Unseen didn't really seem like her.

I like season 1 the best. They seemed the most like normal people here. Any time they dressed in more revealing clothes, it came through as the actresses choosing to or being put up to it by the showrunners. It didn't match their personalities and was distracting. 

So season 1 overall is my favorite for clothes, and season 2 isn't so bad. There were good and bad moments throughout the series, but 1 was the best.

Honestly outfits are a strange oddity in Charmed. They just aren't good most of the time to put it lightly. In fact some of them range from questionable to outright laughable. Piper is the only sister I'd say that dresses the most moderately appropriate. However I wouldn't lie and say its a very charming quality of the show. If I had to rate best or worst my opinion would go as such

Phoebe: Gonna get the worst out of the way before I get to best. Phoebe had by far the worst outfits in the show! I could name so many but here are some examples

Phoebe Worst: 



There's  the atrocious cinderella outfit (the worst outfit in the entire show!) and her Queen of the Underworld outfit that made her look like Pocahontas (complete with a corsette that looked ugly with the attire)







As with good outfits. Honestly I think Season 1 and somewhat 2 struck the best balance. And Phoebe's no different, I love hoe casual Phoebe's outfits were in Season 1 some highlights include these 

Phoebe Best:



(I found the knitwear that was most common in season 1 help give off the 90's vibe, even if in Prue's case it didn't feel work centric) 



(I'd say the blue dress she wore in Season 2's Witch Trial is a good Phoebe outfit, along with what I consider her best hairstyle)



(There's also her striped shirt from Season 1's The Power of Two) 


Even Season 8 as a whole had Phoebe's attire more toned down. Which is one of the few positive things about Season 8. Minus that ghastly combination of red track suit, ugs and tube top. 



As for Phoebe's hairstyle. By far her best hairstyle to me will always be the one she had in Witch Trial. It suited her so well and to be should've been the iconic look for her 



As for Phoebe's worst hairstyle it would have to be her Season 6 and early season 7 hair. To clarify, I'm not saying the Pixie styled hair is a bad look some people/actresses can pull it off (Jamie Lee Curtis is a good example), it just didn't suit Alyssa/Phoebe, especially when standing next to the other two sisters. And it didn't look much better in early season 7 either. 


I would put late Season 6 as well, as the slightly growing out Pixie Cut looked worse imo




Now that Phoebe is done, I'd move onto Paige. Paige is a weird one, because I do enjoy the fact she was able to shift hair colors. But I also think she tried to have the more creative styles, but could sometimes be almost as unappealing as Phoebe. To me these are Paige's worst outfits

There's also the horrible halter top Paige wears in the episode Long Live the Queen. What is up with the tie?



As for great Paige outfits I'd have to point to 







When it comes to hairstyles I think Seasons 4 and 5 had the best Paige hair. The picture above from 4x9 being my favorite of the Paige do's in Season 4. Along with her Season 4 look in general. 

These are my two preferred Paige hairstyles 



As a side note Paige's hair in Season 5 looks GREAT when its styled up or in a ponytail specifically. Both the opener and finale are the highlights of Paige's red hair! 


As for Piper. Well as I stated I don't remember anything bad from her, she usually wears more normal clothing. And out of all the sisters, unless she was possessed (such as the table dance scene in Coyote Piper) she didn't exactly have to wear anything provcotive. In fact when it comes to bad outfits I can only think of one in particular which would have to be that Christ Diamond Choker Top from Season 8. It doesn't look good at all.

When it comes to Piper's best outfits these are mine 




As for hairstyles. Out of all the sisters I think Piper pulled off the long braided hair the most. And of course her Season 1 bangs which were good as well! 




I also noticed Piper can really pull off jackets well. 


And lastly Prue. Prue just could not pull off any type of revealing wear (sure in general those were among the worst on the show) but for a style it just didn't suit Prue well outside of the Ms Hellfire getup and as a result Prue's worst have to be

I don't know if it's just me, but I love Prue's knitwear. There's just something charming about Prue's various season 1 knitwear, while not appropriate for work I did enjoy them. I would also apply her Season 3 hair and late Season 1 hairstyle as among my favorites. I know this was long, and took a lot of image hunting. But these are my thoughts on the outfits/hairstyles. lol

Also really liked coyote pipers hair

This was quite nice for Prue also

and I liked her lil braid here

I agree with everyone's "worsts", so I will just show you my favourites for each character.

Prue
Favourite hair:

Prue rocked everything knitted. She looked gorgeous in everything! My favourite hair era was s1-s2, but she still always had lovely hair.

Favourite outfit:

The leather jacket, that's all. Also, Prue did away with simple fashion, but could still always pull off some quirky clothes and her knitted pieces were...iconic.

Piper
Favourite hairs:
I wish we saw more crimped/taken out of braids hairstyles from Piper. Also, of course I included her bangs because I just thought they were perfect on her and they're kind of symbolic of her character in my head??? And I cannot forget how absolutely glowy and gorgeous she looks in "A Call to Arms"...that hair!

Favourite outfit:

She looks darling in everything. I love her sweaters and cardigans and turtlenecks, especially in the first season. She also looked adorable in her little black dress in "Thank You For Not Morphing" as well as her party dress from the beginning of the episode.

Phoebe
Favourite hair:


Her short season 1 hair was so gorgeous on her and it fit her character so well! The little curls were adorable and when she did the braids in "Witch Trial" ... it was everything.


Favourite outfit:

They all look gorgeous here, but Phoebe always rocked the high waisted jeans and tops.

Again, I LOVE Phoebe in jeans, she's gorgeous.

Paige
Favourite hair:


Paige/Rose could pull off any hair cut/colour/style. She looked fabulous as always and so magical.

Favourite style:


She looked really cute in all of her quirky clothes, I think she pulled them off really well!

Prue : Favorite season 2. It's ok season 3 her hair are lighter until her final.
I don't like season 1.

Piper : I like all the time except 1 and 2

Phoebe : Favorite season 4 episode 1 to 13 I really like. Worst season 4 episode 14 to half season 5.

Paige I like all the seasons but not really season 4.

I agree with some one on this board that Phoebe's trademark should have been that braided style she had in Witch Trial. And I liked how her hair was always the lightest - indicated that she was the youngest. Or even flowers and things in her hair like a bandana, flowers etc.
-It would have made more sense if she was in gym gear, yoga pants, like that lulu lemon sort of vibe.

I kind of wish Holly would never got rid of her bangs, or least side swept it. For practicality - Liked the knit and the jeans (sometimes even those leather pants!)

For Prue - I liked the triangle division she had in her hair in season 1. Leather jacket, boss like shoes and I did like Prue wearing "strapless, sleeveless, fearless attire"

Going against the grain here, I never had any major issues with any of the characters hair choices. Even some of their least popular hairs (Phoebe late S4-S5), I really like. But there is no denying they made some very questionable choices when it comes to outfits. One that stands out to me is Paige's outfit in Cat House, it completely washed her out and made her look unwell. I can usually overlook it though as it's part of the charm in my opinion.

The fashion was definitely the best in season 1. It looked classy, realistic and fit with the gothic look of that season. From season 2 onwards the fashion became more colourful, loud, impractical, messy and revealing. It's when they started wearing tops that consisted of a napkin tied in the back with a string. Piper's clothes looked the most normal, but also rather boring and not very flattering.

As for the hair, I also preferred the styles in the first season. I'm not a fan of all the braids, feathers, beads, hair bands and bandanas. It just looked so messy.

Another thing with those clothing and hair styles in later seasons, I don't even remember those being in fashion at the time whatsoever.
