It was one of the worst ideas of the show. It made things to easy and was never used after it's respective season (including the last two eps of season 8 for the hollow) I wish it had never been included in charmed.
The hollow was an entity that was sucking up magic before good and evil teamed up to banish it. Who created it? How did they capture it since spells are magical. How did evil and good decide to work together? No explanation for anything. Why include it when we already had the Nexus?

I don't hate the idea of the Hollow, I hate the way it was presented, that could have been a good subplot to get into rather than the several other boring storylines that had zero payoffs.
If they represented the Gods/Goddess mythology correctly, it could have been created by them or maybe the Goddess of Magic, Hekate. I completely agree with you about the Nexus, even that was an unexplored storyline, it seems like they have ideas and then just place them into the show without thinking about said idea in a longterm stance.

For me, I hated the most that they kept mixing up the Nexus and the Hollow and the Shadow, especially in S8. That should've still been the Nexus. Yes, they vanquished the SHADOW in 'Something Wicca This Way Go' (which is why I think they used the Hollow totally incorrectly in S8) but the Manor still sat at the nexus of a spiritual pentagram that was also a wiccan one, so it was still a battleground for good vs evil. They still could've turned evil without needing the Hollow.

Just my idea on how they could have set it up: Billie and Christy try and use Wyatt as a way to get the Hollow but Wyatt isn't strong enough to give the Ultimate Power access to the Hollow, Paige orbs herself along with Piper and Phoebe down to the basement as they start to invoke the power of the Nexus which goes to Phoebe, since she was born in the middle of the spiritual pentagram.

I don't hate the idea of the hollow. I found that during seasons 1-4 the show was pretty consistent. It was from the fifth that it became a mess. The hollow is imprisoned by a demon and a witch while 4 years later the power of three can do so too. I would have preferred the source to take a lot of power over multiple episodes and go crazy. Destroying the nexus which is a natural energy in the center of a pentagram is also a bad idea.

One, I hated the Nexus. I hated the idea that someone born above the Nexus has a 50/50 chance of either choosing good or evil, when that just about describes everyone. I also noticed that the writers couldn't even get the list of elements associated with Wicca correctly.
As for Hollow . . . I never understood what that was really about.
