A few parts that made the show so special were lost or less a focus after the first season? What did you miss the most?

I chose all of the above. I could go on and on about each of the options you posted.
But I guess for me, if I had to put it into one thing that captures all or at least most of the ideas in your poll, it would be that season 1 had an intimacy that the other seasons overall lack. There were episodes throughout the show that captured it, but season 1 just had this comfortable, cozy feeling overall, much more so than the others.
Most of the plots were about the sisters and their relationships, be that with each other or with their connections to the rest of the world: their jobs, their status as witches, their goals, etc. But mostly the focus was on the three of them together.
The clothing was comfortable, the lighting was dimmed, and their group was small. Andy was mostly kept in the dark, Leo wasn't a central character, and their jobs were serious and realistic. It felt like the most "real" season, even in a show about magic, and the intimacy that I described before matched perfectly with that.

Agreed totally. All of these show why S1 is so often cited as the best season.
Your poll shows why losing Andy while keeping Leo changed (and hurt) Charmed so much - what a difference the rest of the series might have been had we never heard the word "whitelighter" after Leo left in 'Love Hurts'. Letting the main male not be magical helped keep the show seem real.

For me, it's a tie between more focus on the sisters and less on the men, the original fashion choices, and a balance between their "normal" lives, their witchy lives, and the real world. I was going to put down the sisterly subplot instead of the balance between everything one, but I figured the sisterly subplot one and more of a focus on the sister one could be combined, since they're fairly similar.

Julian, what a fantastic thread idea. I like ones like these.
I went all of the above. I can't pick three, as all of them prove why S1 was the best. What a great show we could have had, if all of those remained and continued into season 2 and beyond.

Quake Andy Gothic old style Score
(not in that order)
Is it bad that I do miss Quake more than Andy.
I think the Andy storyline would have been weird in Season 2 anyway. I wonder what the dynamic would have been between Leo and/or Dan as well.
Gothic Old Style - I felt this this was coming back a bit in Season 4. With the gargoyals, the grimlocks and how the evil world was portrayed evil church like. (Fully how this turned into Harry Potter later in the series.
The score is what makes 1x01 the best. And I can hear them when I think of Melinda Warren in The Witch is Back.
Quake gave it a bit of the edge. Like the chance of having an earthquake (Was real lol) but also dishes breaking, witch's being in a kitchen, It kind of gave a bit of a sit-com but edgey feel in contrast to the mysterious Manor. I didn't mind P3 but prefer Quake.
I think the sisterly subplots etc were carried on throughout until Season 3 and 4 but weren't as with such depth.
Back then I could tolerate witches and whitelighters and loved episodes like Secrets and Guys, Love Hurts etc. I don't think they were well written or thought about long term in Season 1, as much as witches, warlocks, ghosts and demons must have been in the pilot.
I also miss how the crappy episodes are still worth watching today over some of the best ones in Season 6 and 8.
Miss Season 1's nostalgic feeling but I get that in Season 2, 3 and 4 as well.

I second that this thread is a fantastic idea!
I love season 1! It's my favourite season. I really miss the gothic vibes and the lighting. They kind of bring this back in season 3 and 4 but it made the serious feel unique and different. The cinematography and different cuts were also unique and felt like low budget horror movie (in a good way!). Just look at how they filmed "Is there a Woogey in the House" or the lighting in Javna's studio.
The original score music added to the magic and mystery of the show. The music afterwards just felt too generic.
The sisters' fashion was awesome! It felt in character and appropriate. They still got to have some fun with it but it didn't go overboard like it did later on.
I also liked the mix of serial storytelling and standalone episodes in season 1 the most out of any season. It was a good balance between being overly serialized like season 4 (too much plot too quickly) and mostly standalone like season 2 (the main arc of Piper's love triangle was too weak to carry the season)

After re-watching S1, I really miss Quake. It just really had a nice feel where the sisters relaxed after work or a demon vanquish. I felt like P3 didn't do much other than just promoting the latest bands. I actually really enjoyed most of Piper's subplot at Quake, as it gave her a sense of identity outside of her relationships.
I wonder if it would have just been better if Piper just became the manager of Quake, instead of quitting, and kept her there for more seasons until she was ready to open her own, maybe at the end of the series. Maybe she'd quit Quake after giving birth to Wyatt, and start catering out of the manor as she raises her son at home.
The original music score is so much better in S1 and really fitted the show more.
This also just shows what a difference the show was when we lost Andy and kept Leo. Not bring back Leo after S1, and we'd get to keep the realness. letting a male-co star who wasn't magical kept the show grounded. Leo shifted it, so it was less about the sisters, and that led to the sisters relying on him more for help, having them bail them out of trouble to heal and orb.
I prefer when the sisters doing their own digging, and not getting Leo to check with the Elders. If they can't find an answer in the book of shadows, they go elsewhere like a wicca store, or Phoebe pulls out her laptop to research or they check with their non-magical help in the form of Andy/Darryl for any help from there end.
I picked all of the above in the poll.

Thats so sweet. Thanks guys! I liked Andy. Probably more so than Leo, Cole, Dan, Chris or Daryl. I liked the original venues of work/play for the sisters in Season 1. Buckland's, Quake and potentially a university (that we didn't really see). I feel if Andy would have lived, it would have been a wingey storyline like Leo being mortal/helpless/wanting to be involved in Season 7/8 or when Cole was temporarily human - and it would have taken focus of the sisters. Maybe if Andy was relocated and would come back now and then and they worked through long distance that just never could work.

I also missed the gothic vibe of the first season, which I believe could have easily translated into the later seasons.

Yet the longest running jobs any of the sisters had in P3 and The Bay Mirror were my least favorites and the ones that suited the sisters better lasted no were near as long. I'm surprised they even had Piper quiting the first place. S1 ended with her wanting to follow her dreams but come S2 she's running a nightclub not her dream. It was likely a network demand for the club or to copy Buffy which I believe had a nightclub. But I wouldn't have minded if she stayed at Quake a while longer. Maybe when Wyatt is born she'd decide to cater out of the manor while raising her son. Leading her to open her own place at the end of the series.

It sucked when they made Prue's job a freelance photographer after only showing an interest in it after being told that her past life, she was working as a photographer, I think it would have made more sense if she had an interest in the craft beforehand. I would have had Prue work up the chain at Bucklands then her purchasing the Auction House then latter renaming it "Prue Halliwell's Auction House" or something like that. I think Paige being a photo journalist and her first charge being Maggie Murphy (Murphy's Luck: S02E16) whom she saves from suicide using her skills as a social worker, would have definitely been perfect for her since she could still use her skills as a social worker and being able to help people, something that she loved. However I do agree that she should have been a social worker, it also provides a cover, like Leo being a handyman. I could also see Piper working up the chain at Quake then purchasing the restaurant naming it Halliwell, making it a classy restaurant using local produce and meat, using local wines from Napa Valley and having a childfree area, giving her a sense of normalcy while still being a witch, in my opinion, I don't think she ever hated being a witch, it just the sacrificing she hated. Phoebe would have done well with working at an Occult Shop (From Fear to Eternity S01E13). I would have preferred it while she was unemployed studied the Book Of Shadows and brought new books and witchy supplies from the occult shop then organised the attic to make it more efficient (a desk with a blessed pen and pad, an organised area to brew potions, a bookshelf where the new books would sit, an area for scrying, shelves for crystals making sure that opposing crystals wouldn't be next to each other and then room for growth) I do believe that Phoebe would have definitely made the attic as organised as Leo did when he clipped his wings. I don't believe that neither Prue or Piper would have minded since they were both practical and would have wanted Phoebe doing something rather than nothing.

I have thought this so many times, Charmed struggles with foreshadowing. The point u made about Prue's newfound love of photography in season 2 perfectly drives home that point. And even in later seasons, season 6 for example, when we are introduced to Gideon, we are just supposed to accept that he is Leo's mentor because Leo states that as fact even though we have never heard of him before? Why couldn't the writers try and create an overall story arc for each character with hints and teases throughout the series of the general direction they planned to go in with each character? Instead, we get these abrupt, clumsy changes of direction for characters which make little sense. Prue could have had moments in season 1 where she hints at her love of photography, or Leo could have mentioned magical school in passing in the early seasons and implied that the headmaster there was someone he held in great esteem....did we get that, though? NOPE. Or as another example, if you are going to introduce the Cleaners, at least mention them in the "All Hell Breaks Loose" episode, because that would have been a good starting point for their characters.

Prue's newly founded love for Photography should have at least had a mention in the episode, she could have had a line that went something like this "I wonder if this could be the reason why I wanted to do photography at school?" but there isn't because the writers and show-runners aren't that creative. Magic School should have been brought up before Gideon especially if it is huge as presented. There are so many things that should have been discussed with the Charmed Ones that it makes me wonder if there is things that the Elders still hasn't told them and because of that I have always wanted a Charmed Ones V The Elders with the Charmed Ones becoming more grey.

Everything that happened with Prue as a photojournalist would've fit Phoebe so much better. If anything, I'd want Paige to start working at the Bay Mirror where she could use her social service skills to help those who write in for help. I just don't think PhoeME would ever do a good job doing that.

I believe that Phoebe shouldn't have had a desk job but this is something that I can definitely see her doing, helping people.

Is something wrong with Proboards? The quotes are appearing off for the last few posts, and I can't make out who is saying what?
But I agree with others that Phoebe being a photojournalist fits her so much more, and Prue at Bucklands, or better yet returning to the Museum, if Roger was long gone. I always felt working at a Museum than an Auction House fitted her even better. I give Prue credit for leaving Buckland given the state it was in, and I'd have hated her to stay here if it was under the management it had.
But after quitting Buckland, instead of becoming a photojournalist, I'd prefer her going back to the Museum (with Roger no longer the boss, because he was arrested for doing shady things behind the scenes) or finding a job similar to that or Bucklands.
And Paige starting to work at the Bay Mirror using her social service skills to help people who write in for help, I'd have more faith in her help over PhoeME, who wouldn't do a good job. With the way she acted in S5-S8, she should have become a model. PERFECT for PhoeME to make it ALL about her, and get all the attention with photoshoots.
