Can anyone explain to me exactly how this works? As best as I can remember, the explanation was that you couldn’t use your powers if you went to a point where you hadn’t been born, yet. (Chris - and presumably Cole, that time he went back to try and wipe out the entire Warren line - got around that with spells specifically designed to work around that.) That would suggest that they get their powers from an external source… except in “That 70’s Episode”, the adult Charmed Ones couldn’t use their powers because their younger selves had them.
So, only one person can use the powers at a time… except that isn’t true, either, as proven by “Astral Monkey”. So the powers are genetic?
Well, that would make sense… were it not for “A Knight to Remember”, where Paige is able to tap into the Enchantress’s powers while the Enchantress is still using them. So why couldn’t Prue and Piper do that with their child selves?
Seriously, what are the rules for this?

Charmed and rules werent really two things that went well together.
But the basic fundamentals went: Travel to the past - Only one set of you has access to your powers. Travel to the way past - You cant use your active powers. Travel to the future - you're able to use your powers if you inhabit your future selves body.
Astral Monkey was set in present day and shows that it is genetic. But you have to remember when you time travel it involves magic so that magic has fail safes in it to preserve the timeline to a degree.
The Halliwell sisters didnt know or think about trying to tap into their younger selves as Paige was able to do with the Enchantress.

Is this the reason why Fetus Chris didn't have any powers while Fetus Wyatt did - because Chris was already there with his powers when Fetus Chris was conceived, so Fetus Chris couldn't have the powers until Chris died? Or did Chris' powers go into Fetus Chris when Chris died? Along the same idea, is the REAL reason why the Charmed Ones didn't have their powers when they went WAY back in time because Fetus Melinda Warren already had them? Could/should Charlotte have been able to tap into them?

*nods* Okay, that makes sense. Although I'm not sure if that's canon or fanon. I know I've seen that in a number of fanfics, but not sure if it was actually part of the show.
If it's canon, can someone find it in the fan-written scripts and post it here? If you can't, I'll go with my solution - Chris has the powers because Fetus Chris isn't conceived yet. Might be why he came before he was conceived. I always thought that was stupid on his part - or proof that originally he wasn't supposed to be Piper and Leo's second son.
But since it's been forever since I watched S6 (don't/won't have that DVD...) I could very well be wrong.

I tend to mix the two up, due to how much I read fanfics. But finally cleared it up for us all by looking at the transcript for Chris Crossed. So it was a spell apparently not a potion.

Spell, potion, he took the necessary precautions.
Im surprised thats a rule that the writers even remembered.

But, I could have sworn one episode they did have their powers going into the past, but I can't remember. Sure the writers forgot their own rules.

Yup, you guys were right - they used a spell. I'm sure Chris heard from his mother about how they lost their powers when they went to the past, so they came up with the spell.
But I still think that's why Fetus Chris didn't have any until Big Chris died. That makes much more sense and follows the rules.

I want to give Charmed a break when it comes to time travel - time travel in any show/movie/book is notoriously inconsistent and nonsensical. So when you put something nonsensical into an already inconsistent and nonsensical (fantasy/supernatural) show it's bound to be confusing as heck.
