EMMETT: I've browsed this board, couldn't find the original thread where it was discussed. I'm SO happy to find actual evidence that I'm not crazy and there WAS a Christmas episode planned for season 4, but it was pulled from the production line-up.
Either A Paige From the Past was a script rewritten to replace Home For the Halliwells, or it could even have been Trial By Magic, as it was a pretty filler episode that didn't even have Cole in it for the arcs in S4 at that time. Fun to speculate right.
EMMETT: So what do you all think. Do you think A Paige From the Past was reworked from the original planned Home for the Halliwells Christmas episode, or was Trial By Magic just the replacement episode script, since Cole and the ongoing Phoebe/Cole arc takes a backseat in this one. A much easier script to write in a hurry for production.

I always though a Paige from the Past was supposed to be a holiday episode and that the Bonnie and Clyde storyline was written in.
Perhaps it was supposed to be 1 sister in the past, 1 in the present and 1 in the future?
Or Piper wanting to make Xmas great for Paige? Perhaps Paige wanting to spend the Holidays with her other relatives.
Don't know what Phoebe's backstory would have been.

You know, I’d always wondered why there was never a Christmas episode for Charmed period. I would have loved to see one, even if it only one episode over the entire series.
That being said, I didn’t watch Charmed when it was airing live, so I had no idea this was even a thing for Season 4 (as a new Charmed fan who watched the show for the first time in 2020, I love discovering new things about the show!). So I’m so glad you posted this, Emmett!
The fact that it was titled “Home For The Halliwells”... I’m crying just thinking about how heartwarming this episode could have been. It may have not been an episode that was huge to the overall arch of the season, but seeing the sisters bond, Paige spending her first Christmas with her sisters... It would have been so great! A missed sisterly moment for Piper, Phoebe, and Paige indeed!
This was certainly an interesting read. I don’t know much about issues with the WB or much about the network at all since I did not watch anything on this network when the network was a thing. (I was only four when Charmed first started, and no one in my house watched the show or the network.) It sounds to me like Charmed caved too easily. (Or maybe I should say Brad Kern caved too easily?) I do feel like a Christmas episode would have been somewhat healing in light of what had happened earlier in the year. Whether you celebrated Christmas or not, just to have an episode at the end of the year that could spread some happiness and hope for those watching would have been uplifting.
Now, to answer your question, I want to say Trial By Magic was more likely the replacement episode for this. As you said, it’s pretty much a filler episode, one that would have been easier to put together with a short amount of time to write. A Paige From The Past was a critical episode for Paige’s character. It gave a backstory to her, something that seems less likely as a rework in comparison to Trial By Magic. It also connected back to things introduced in Charmed Again, Part 1 that Paige mentions to Shane at P3 about her parents dying and her having a problem with alcohol in the past. Take out A Paige From The Past from Season 4, then we miss an important part of Paige’s story. Take out Trial By Magic and... Well, nothing’s really missed. (Though I haven’t watched this episode in a while, so maybe I missed something that was somewhat important? I will have to stay tuned when the board re-watch gets to this episode!) If I could have had it go my way, then it would have been 4x09 – Muse To My Ears, 4x10 – Home For The Halliwells, 4x11 – A Paige From The Past, Scrap Trial By Magic as 4x12 and just go in to Lost And Bound as the episode after A Paige From The Past. But I guess that’s what fanfiction is for!
I suppose it could be argued that A Paige From The Past wasn’t necessarily needed and then Paige’s past could be explored in other episodes, so it’s always a possibility too that this was the reworked Home For The Halliwells episode. But whether it was the reworked to replace the Christmas episode or not, I love this one! Rose shines in this one, and I’m glad she was able to have this Paige centric episode. Definitely my favorite Paige episode!
Now unless this Christmas episode was originally an idea for Prue, Piper, and Phoebe if Prue had never died/Shannen hadn’t been fired and they’d kind of just inserted Paige into Prue’s parts and maybe they didn’t really think the episode in itself would be well received because of that? I mean, there are times Paige’s parts do feel very much Prue in Season 4. This would have made it easier to scrap/rework altogether, but I highly doubt it, as the Christmas episode would have been around episode 10-11 in Season 4 and I don’t think they’d planned that far ahead before Shannen was fired (at least, not script-wise). Even if they had the plan for it, they would have had enough time to rework it with Paige and make it more fitting for Paige’s character. But it was just a thought that came to me as I was writing this!
Still left wondering why we never got a Halliwell Christmas prior to the possibility of doing a Christmas episode in Season 4 though. Or even after Season 4.
Sad the closest thing we ever got to a Christmas episode was Prue, Piper, and Phoebe watching the tape Victor left for them opening gifts on Christmas morning together as young kids in Thank You For Not Morphing...

That did always feel somewhat disconnected to me anyway since the majority of the episode focused on Paige. Ooh, I like the thought of 1 sister in the past, 1 in the present, and 1 in the future! That would have made for a great Christmas episode! And oh, the idea of Piper trying to make Christmas special for Paige with it being her first Christmas holiday she could spend with them and then Paige being conflicted with wanting to spending time with her adoptive family but also wanting to spend time with her sisters? Could have brought her Aunt Julie and Uncle Dave into it--the aunt and uncle Paige was supposedly close to but seemed to forget existed later on lol?--maybe she could have introduced Piper and Phoebe to them? Imagine Piper, Phoebe, and Paige singing Christmas carols together, them sitting by the tree drinking hot cocoa, just enjoying each other's company? Not to mention this would have been the first Christmas they'd had without Prue and just having Paige around for the holiday--even if she'd spent Christmas morning with her adoptive family rather than them--would have helped fill a hole in Piper and Phoebe's hearts with not having their big sister around anymore to celebrate. Okay... Now I'm getting emotional at three in the morning. (Time for me to go to bed lol.) You've inspired me to write a Christmas fanfic, rebooted! (Or maybe several!)

Okay... Now I'm getting emotional at three in the morning. (Time for me to go to bed lol.) You've inspired me to write a Christmas fanfic, rebooted! (Or maybe several!) I mean… Aunt Julie and Uncle Dave didn’t even show up for Paige’s funeral. It might’ve made for a more interesting storyline if we ended up finding out that they never even existed in the first place. No, not that Paige was crazy; she just didn’t want to have to deal with any well-meaning (but ultimately painful) sympathy and/or pity from her coworkers about her lack of a family - I think that Donnie (that was the dirtbag’s name from the episode with the Furies, right?) especially wouldn’t have been able to resist taking a shot or three at Paige working so hard to help fix so many families while being unable to do the same for herself - so she just faked the occasional conversation and carried on with her life. So along comes Christmas, with Phoebe wanting Paige to celebrate with them but not wanting to push, Piper naturally assuming that she’ll want to spend the holidays with the Matthews family, and Paige torn between anxiety and depression at having to be alone for the holidays again and not wanting to admit that she doesn’t have another family anymore because of how pathetic she thinks her ruse will make her seem. How would the truth come out? Well, why not have this be when Paige and Victor first meet (because I honestly have no idea when that happened, as they just suddenly… knew each other). Naturally, he’s not exactly thrilled with the idea that Patty had a kid with Sam (though, he would be glad to know that such a thing is possible for Piper’s sake, since he knows what a great mother she could make), though his reaction would be tempered by learning how her adoptive parents were dead. With Prue’s death still fresh, he’d know all too well what a loss like that was like. But anyway, over the course of their awkward conversation, Paige would blurt out that it wasn’t like she had any other relatives to celebrate Christmas with… much to the confusion of Piper and Phoebe, who’d been listening in to make sure things went more or less smoothly. Long story short, they get everything sorted out, holiday feels abound, roll credits. Not that I’m trying to give you more plotbunnies, or anything… 😉

I can imagine it being quite a healing episode where Paige reflects on what shes lost and gained and Piper and Phoebe do the same as well. And good point, there could have been an Xmas Party organization at P3. Funny that there was the 40s party organization in the episode before hand called Muse to My Ears. And yes, I could see Phoebe sing Carols, but rushing around too much stressing about stuff not having time to sing. Paige would have sung along!

That like NO ONE showed up for her funeral. Apparently it was mentioned Glen showed up (I forgot this), but he’s never visibly shown. (Thank you for still caring about Paige, Glen!) So Glen and some leprechauns and that’s it? Paige deserved better! Okay, this is a really interesting idea. I had never even considered that, but I could see Paige doing this for the reasons that you described. My heart is breaking for a lonely Paige! And yes, this would be a great time for Paige and Victor to meet and bond for the first time (because that never really does happen on the show, does it?). And then Piper and Phoebe being there to comfort her and them telling her something like, “You’ll never have to worry about spending another Christmas alone again. You’ve got us now,” and then there’s hugs, some more tears before we lead into them celebrating the holiday together... This would have been another great episode for Rose, too, if something like this had been done. (I’d still have kept A Paige From The Past in there as well, but it’d have to air before this episode then, maybe closer to the beginning of the season? Rose was so great in A Paige From The Past, and I would have loved to see another episode like this one from her! I feel like she lacked the opportunity to showcase her acting skills with the more emotional scenes like she had in A Paige From The Past.) Welp. Send help. My brain is on overload with Christmas Halliwell feels and we haven’t even gotten to Halloween yet...

And yes, I could see Phoebe sing Carols, but rushing around too much stressing about stuff not having time to sing. Paige would have sung along! I’ve always imagined Phoebe would be the sister (of all four) who would be the most enthusiastic about singing aloud. Even if she wasn’t the best singer, she would just enjoy it that much (especially if one of her favorite songs came on) and be the loudest, most passionate one singing. (And we can’t forget her dancing, right? What about those eighties dance moves Prue mentioned before?) And Phoebe’s enthusiastic nature would bring Prue, Piper, and later on Paige out of their shells with singing aloud. Paige may have been shy at first, but we know she likes singing, too, so she’d be joining Phoebe in no time! I even imagine when Prue was alive, Phoebe would have been able to get her to join her. Remember when they were playing patty-cake at P3 in Awakened? Maybe this scene inspired this thought, but I’ve imagined that there was this one song both Prue and Phoebe loved and whenever it came on and the two were with each other, they’d just stop whatever they were doing, look at each other, and just start to dance/sing along no matter where they were. (Maybe this would be more of a Season 2/3 Prue, after her and Phoebe have grown closer.) Piper I see being the most shy. She’d roll her eyes at her sisters when they tried to get her to join, but eventually do it. Maybe she wouldn’t sing aloud, but hum along or something. (Maybe Leo could make her feel more comfortable and bring it out of her? These two singing two together, I just... Ugh, the feels.) Oh, and then Cole... For a Christmas episode of some kind... Why do I imagine him just walking in (or shimmering in, HA!) singing along (like being really into it) and no one expected it and then everyone just stops and stares at him in surprise? And when he realizes everyone’s stopped, he stops, looks around innocently, and is like, “What? I thought we were all singing?” I don’t know. I saw Cole as awkward at times and I loved that about him, especially with him being so intimidating as Belthazor. ... Okay, now I’m getting too carried away. Please stop me now xD

I had no idea about this, I do remember somewhere fans brought a Christmas episode up, I just didn't know, it was seriously gonna happen in S4, but got pulled from production, and said script never got filmed.
9/11 ruined it, which makes no sense. That would be a good thing to show viewers after a hard year. I always wanted a Christmas episode.
What I'd give to get my hands on this script that never got made. Someone needs to write a fanfic for a Christmas episode.

Saving it to my “Charmed” playlist now Yeah, I noticed this board is more in favor of S1-S2 (I call it the sisterly era). I'm all over the place but for the most part, I do enjoy the majority of the show. Plus, I like Brody (which I've noticed not many like him, either LOL), and "Ordinary Witches" has Brody, in it. That being said, glad you like that video. I didn't make it, somebody else did, but I watch it every Christmas The weird thing is, I started watching Charmed mid-Season 4. (Recently, that is. First time I saw Charmed was in 2020, so I’m just a little late to the crowd lol.) I caught it on a TV channel (PopTV – They used to air episodes every night during the week, now it’s hit or miss whether they air a few episodes early Saturday mornings!) I was watching to catch reruns of another one of my favorite TV shows, and this was the season it was on. So you’d think I might like the Paige era more just because of that, but I fell in love with the Prue era. I just like the sisters more then, and it hurts how much Piper and Phoebe change later on. Paige, though, I love her so much! Prue is my favorite, but Paige will always be a close second for me Looking back at Ordinary Witches, I remember the Christmas part of it. I have mixed feelings about Brody, but then again, it’s been a while since I’ve seen Season 7 fully, so I know I’m probably forgetting some important details lol. I think it’s time I give Seasons 5-8 a proper rewatch (Season 4 I’ll watch with you guys on the board ). I catch reruns of Charmed on TNT sometimes, but when I get a chance to watch them, they always seem to be the same ones lol (the ones I remember better from these seasons). The person who made it did a great job with it! I'll definitely be watching this video on Christmas! And probably several times leading up to it I love Christmas! Please stop me now xD Oh, no! Phoebe must have been bad that year - she got Cole for Christmas! *ba-dum-tsh*…sorry, I couldn’t help it. 🤷🏻♂️😉 Andrew, I'M DYING. This is great! That line is gonna have to make the Christmas fanfic. All credits to you, of course!

Thank you for all these! Nothing like more inspiration for a Christmas fic. I gotta get started on that... Oh, Piper. She be blowing up/vanquishing the Christmas decorations too xD Just saw all these Christmas shots with Paige and Brody this morning from watching Ordinary Witches on TNT! Agreed about re-watching episodes that you don’t like. Time for me to start S4-S8 rewatch!!! Also, I love that Alyssa Milano played their mom in the video in Thank You For Not Morphing. Me watching that scene thinking Phoebe is like, "Hey, I'm watching myself on that tape!" ;P

Thank you for all these! Nothing like more inspiration for a Christmas fic. I gotta get started on that... You're welcome! Let me just add more to your plate because there's actually another Charmed Christmas video that I like, but I posted it, in a different thread. Maybe, all the other videos, that I posted will overload you with inspiration xD But, anyway, I labeled the other Christmas video as "Charmed Christmas 2" under the "Miscellaneous" slot, of my post, in this thread. Hope to see you there! ;P

Hope to see you there! ;P Just watched it! I’m crying now. Nothing like being inspired to write a sad Christmas fic with a happy ending! (Because I really like to make my characters go through a lot when I write my stories... Why must I be so mean to them?) (Side note: I’ve got several videos under my Charmed playlist. Most of them involve Prue... Can you tell how much I love her lol? I don’t have near as many as you’ve probably seen, especially since I’m still pretty much a newbie when it comes to Charmed since I found it last year lol. I noticed the "Prue Sees Her Own Death" video under the Miscellaneous section. This one I have seen and it’s under my playlist. I like how they incorporate the attic scene from That '70s Episode when they first arrive in the past with All Hell Breaks Loose and make it look like Prue's watching her own death from the staircase. I’ve also got one where Paige goes back in the past and saves Prue... I’ll bet you’ve seen that one before!)

I've seen so many Charmed YT videos, that a lot of the ones I liked aren't around anymore, and it sucks Sad Charmed Moments with Within Temptation's The Swan Song Cole "Angel" Spin-Off Intro 8 Years of Charmed Trailer S1E22 Deja Vu All Over Again Fan-Made Trailer (that's not ANY of the ones listed) Phoebe has a premonition of Paige meeting Prue "Gothic" Charmed Music Video (and not an intro) Actual Charmed Episode series with all four of the sisters and/or no Phoebe All these videos, I can't find, anymore because they're deleted and/or the YTer is no longer around, and it really sucks 'cause a lot of those videos were really great.
