Critically 3. There are a few good episodes at the beginning like the Eyes that Have it and stories like in Cat House and Sense and Sensibility.
Personal Rating 4. In my opinion it just fails. Had the premiers and finales been stronger I think it could have been a 5 or 6 at the max for me

I'd give it a 5/6.
The show takes a drastic change from the previous in tone with it becoming more light hearted and attempting to adapt every single fairytale known to man.
It's a decent season for Paige and Piper, moreso for Paige since this is our 2nd year with her but they essentially do a soft reboot of the character. The once semi gothicness of Paige now becomes a lot more bright, not only in hair but in personality. While in s4 she is distinctly her own person and kind on par with Phoebe despite age, she now fully fulfills the youngest sister role with her being unsure of what she wants to do with herself.
What they did with Cole should make me drop it down a score critically and personally because it is just downright BAD. 12 episodes of the same storyline told each episode of Cole trying to win Phoebe back and Phoebe wanting him dead. Talk about driving a character into the ground. The writers clearly had NO IDEA what to do with him and only kept him around because he was a fan favorite and male lead.

I think the invention of another big bad threat after you had vanquished the Source, the council, seer and then Cole was what made the 2nd half weird.
Having them have to become Goddesses, wearing the outfits and to have Greek Gods was either too intense or badly executed.
The new challenges for the sisters were personal - outlined in the closing of A Witch's Tail.
It could have been a time where the NEW sisterly dynamic was more front and centre - which they did do for the first half of Season 5 - Paige wanting on identity.
It kind of became just a dopamine hit for outfits, special effects and superhero/fairytale story lines.
Also I think that men did watch Charmed and trying to appeal more to men was maybe the mistake. I remember a lot of guys watching the first seasons of Charmed and esp relating to Cole and Leo and even Prue to an extent. There was even that X Files feel with Andy investigating the supernatural.
It just feels like they were trying to find as many demographics to appeal to, rather than its central core which did all the self promoting.

It just feels like they were trying to find as many demographics to appeal to, rather than its central core which did all the self promoting. Pretty much. We've (the board and not just you and me) been talking about this. You have the Network promoting sexier outfits back in S2 (it didn't begin in S5), along with the actors trying to push the show in all sorts of different directions. That's not to say trying to widen your audience is a bad thing, though. IK some (not all) Charmed fans that don't like the earlier seasons and much prefer the later seasons. That is what makes this show interesting IS its DIVERSE audience. There's something for EVERYONE. And, if trying to appeal more to men, I don't really find that wrong 'cause my husband hardly relates to any character except for Cole, and Cole is only around for 2.5 seasons. Perhaps, it wasn't JUST the "sexy outfits" in S5. As it's been made pretty clear around here, the show kept getting more and more revolved around men, but...what's wrong with that? Are shows NOT allowed to adapt nor grow?
