My next data collecting I was doing was counting how many times they said "PO3" spells, and I came across a few episodes (strictly, in the Prue Era, only) that had spells but still had potions/brews attached to them. For example: S1E9 "The Witch is Back"It's very clear and evident that some kind of potion was being made or something was being brewed, in order for the spell to work. As Prue went through all this trouble in hunting down an owl feather, for it. S1E17 "That 70s Episode"When, the Prue Era set of sisters come back from the 70s, they go to the "Nikolas Must Die" spell, and Prue & Piper scramble to get a potion/brew going with lavender, mimosa, holy thistle, etc., while Phoebe says the spell. S2E21 "Apocalypse, Not"When, the Prue Era set of sisters mistake the 4 Horsemen for the Demon of Anarchy, it required BOTH a potion AND a CHANT (not necessarily the PO3). So, both Phoebe & Piper say the spell/chant and then Piper throws the potion. S3E8 "Sleuthing with the Enemy"The Prue Era set of sisters have to say an incantation for the Belthazor vanquishing spell, at the beginning of the episode. S3E17 "Prewitched"The Prue Era set of sisters vanquish Shadow with NOT just a "PO3" spell but with a potion, that Piper throws at him, as well. Seems very similar to the Demon of Anarchy vanquish, mentioned back in S2E21 "Apocalypse, Not" but seems to require the "PO3".
Not really sure if these are vanquishes through spells or potions, for my data collection. They could just be their own category. Wondering what y'all think. EDIT:I lied, the Paige Era has one, and it's in S4E4 "Enter the Demon", for the "Body Switching Spell". Paige was brewing a potion and wished to be Phoebe. Likewise, Piper did the same thing, for the Zen Master.

Prue had to go hunting for an owl feather after all. I forgot all about them having to say an incantation for the Belthazor vanquishing spell. I really thought it was just the potion.

I forgot about S1E1 "Something Wicca This Way Comes", S1E5 "Dream Sorcerer" & S1E11 "Feats of Clay". I was just thinking vanquishing, whereas S1E1 "Something Wicca This Way Comes", S1E5 "Dream Sorcerer" & S1E11 "Feats of Clay" weren't vanquishing, anything, but I just wanted to point out these episodes, as well.

It's weird how the girls needed a potion as well as a spell to vanquish Nikolas the first time yet the writers seemingly thought that Prue only saying the spell the second time he came back would work on him just because of the plotline i.e. Nikolas strangling Prue at Bucklands with the ring the same with Belthazor and the incantation in season 3 but not 4 or 5 unless the spell and potion were only needed once to activate the other then.

Yeah, I thought of you (at least, I think it was you who prefers spells, specifically PO3 spells, over potions LOL) in trying to compile a Spells vs Potions vanquish list. As in number of vanquishes that required a spell (PO3 or otherwise) vs vanquishes by Potions. To no one's surprise, Potion vanquishes are the victor, HOWEVER I think the fandom understates the Prue Era's use of Potions. Especially this weird and odd category where potions/brews are part of the spell's vanquish. The Prue Era is fairly even on Spell & Potion vanquishes. BUT, the Paige Era, surprisingly, utilizes more PO3 spells than the Prue Era, funny enough, but I digress.

I knew they had some, but I find it so interesting that Charmed had quite a few that required both. While some needed a PO3 spell only or just a potion. You'd think vanquishing the Source would require more than just a spell calling on their entire Warren line. Like a potion that requires so much resources like Matthew Tate and their combined powers or somehow linking all their powers when they're used at the exact same time. I don't know just much more than what they did. I only say that, because if that spell is that powerful, why don't they use it on other demons. LOL Which makes me laugh that they could vanquish the Source, yet Matthew Tate was only banished into the locket, they didn't actually properly vanquish him because he's that powerful. But I digress. As for if these are vanquishes through spells or potions. I'm not sure how you properly data these.

I'm not sure how you properly data these. Right. So, for now, I just have these unique situations separate from the list I came up with. This list is STRICTLY successful potion vanquishes that are NOT repeat potion vanquishes, like the Grimlocks in S3E4 "All Halliwell's Eve". Making an exception for S3E19 "The Demon Who Came in from the Cold" & S5E12 "Centennial Charmed" due to the same potion (allegedly) working on different types of demons. I'm (also) including NON-Charmed Ones (yes, got plenty of those, too, that's how bad potion throwing became dominant, in the show) utilizing the Potion Vanquish method. Will NOT include S7E9 "There's Something About Leo", for the Avatars reversed time to save Leo, but I'll use the S7E12 "Extreme Makeover: World Edition" one instead. S1E19 "Out of Sight" S2E4 "The Devil's Music" S2E10 "Heartbreak City" S3E19 "The Demon who Came in from the Cold" S4E13 "Charmed & Dangerous" S5E3 "Happily Ever After" S5E6 "The Eyes Have it" S5E12 "Centennial Charmed" S5E19 "Nymphs Just Wanna Have Fun" S5E20 "Sense & Sense Ability" S5E21 "Necromancing the Stone" S6E9 "Little Monsters" S6E12 "Prince Charmed" S6E15 "I Dream of Phoebe" S6E16 "The Courtship of Wyatt's Father" S6E20 "A Wrong Day's Journey into Right" - The Demonatrixes Potion Vanquished other demons. S6E21 "Witch Wars" S7E5 "Styx Feet Under" S7E12 "Extreme Makeover: World Edition" - Kyle Brody Potion Vanquished an Avatar S7E17 "Scry Hard" S7E19 "Freaky Phoebe" - Imara, posing as Phoebe, Potion Vanquished, a lot of demons. S7E20 "Imaginery Fiends" S7E21 "Death Becomes Them" S8E2 "Malice in Wonderland" S8E5 "Rewitched" - Billie Potion Vanquishes the Imp Master S8E6 "Kill Billie: Vol I" - Billie uses A LOT of Potions against the Dogan and successfully Potion Vanquishes him. S8E12 "Payback's a Witch" - Billie Potion Vanquishes Rotul via Possessor Demon. S8E13 "Repo Manor" - The Shapeshifters posing as the Paige Era Set of sisters Potion Vanquish their ex-slave master S8E22 "Forever Charmed"
I find it interesting, how most of S8's Potion Vanquishing is done by Billie, a non-Charmed One. I can imagine that's how non-Warren Witches or even non-Magical witches like Tanjella from S1E13 "From Fear to Eternity", Marcy Steadwell from S2E9 "Ms. Hellfire", Janna from S3E20 "Exit Strategy", etc., would vanquish evil. Especially someone like Janna, from S3E20 "Exit Strategy", who seemed very versed on potion ingredients and their various names. Something to think about. EDIT: To add, that's how Emma (S4E8 "Black as Cole") was vanquishing demons via Potion Vanquishing. This further solidifies my point that weaker witches than the Charmed Ones would utilize potions because they're NOT the "PO3" which not many episodes utilizes a "PO3" spell, either but I digress.

Excellent point. Weaker witches had to rely on potions. Jannna managed to find a way to use them to heal injuries. Guess she had no whitelighter. But it begs the question why the Halliwells didn't use them more. I could've sworn it was brought up in S6. I find these stats for potions interesting. I suppose witches without powers need to master potion making for protection and against demons or even witches with passive powers that cannot damage demons with an active power.

I suppose if they were very badly hurt, a potion may not heal a very bad wound in a life or death situation but ease the pain so they can get into a hospital fast.

But as had been pointed out before on the Cafe, whitelighters can take the fun and drama out of the show. But the efforts to make a potion were always interesting.

Yeah seeing Emma use a potion really does explain why weaker witches did that. But in some way I don't mind the PO3 not being used all the time. I mean what happens if one sister is MIA or out of commission, they'd need to rely on potions.

From the S3E19 "The Demon who Came in from the Cold" Re-Watch Thread: I think this is the first (of many) potion-only vanquishes! They vanquished 4 demons with potions this episode! Usually one vanquish ends the episode, but they're really letting them tally up! Depends on what you mean by this. 'Cause there are weird/awkward vanquishes with a combo of BOTH potions + spells, like this thread lists out. The first one I can think of, as "the first potion vanquish" (no spell) is in S1E19 "Out of Sight" with the grimlocks. Maybe not necessarily a potion vial being thrown (they were actually in mason jars), nonetheless it's still a potion. And then, Masselin was vanquished with a potion, as well. Albeit, the potion was spilled onto Phoebe's pants and prior to that, it was in a balloon LOL I actually made some (not all) GIFs regarding the different potion containers that the Prue Era used that wasn't really your typical potion vial.
