There are some Charmed fans (and I know they are many) claiming that the series lost much of its punch and enjoyable factor somewhere along the line. I would like to know when and how they believe this train wreck actually happened. Is it just a simple matter of bickering with an actress that doesn't return or a simple matter of some guy ruining the show with his demented and skewed desires. Why, when, and how did Charmed start going downhill?

Honestly, the only point I stopped watching the series was in Season 2, because the storylines became dumb and boring.
I did resume watching at the beginning of Season 3, and I stuck with it until the end.
Here's how I'd rank the seasons, in terms of quality, from most enjoyable to least:
Season 6 Season 5 (S5 and S6 are virtually tied, in my book) Season 3 Season 4 Season 8 Season 7 Season 1 Season 2

Wow, that's certainly not a popular order, though I don't exactly disagree with it. I wouldn't place season 6 up so high, that's my only complaint.
I'd say in terms of most to least enjoyable season 5 has to be up there, and seasons 1 and 2 are down at the bottom for me too. I would place season 6 pretty low, certainly lower than season 7.
Obviously, I'm not the person to ask when did it go wrong, considering I don't think it went that wrong. Sure, the show changed style, but that wasn't always a bad thing.

I don't think the show went downhill. As I have said before, I thought Billie's character was a rediculous idea but that's about it. I have said it before and I will say it again ...I feel the show was ended too abruptly and should have continued...somehow.
There is a reason why the show still airs FOUR times a day on TNT M-F...and I doubt it has something to do with just only 3 seasons of it.

I think it went off track in season four because I found the show to shift from being about sisters who happened to be witches to witches who happened to be sisters.

I don't think the show went downhill. Hunny, the show went downhill. I'm with Rebecca, the show started going downhill obviously in S4. Raitings prove it. I think it was the lowest rated season of Charmed, or maybe it was S8. S8 could not have gone any further down. It was already in the ground, it was so terrible. There were parts after S4, when Charmed was doing pretty well. Like for ex. Chris Crossed, viewers liked Wyatt and Chris. So you can't really pick out a particular part where Charmed just went completely down hill. But in general, I would have to say somewhere in S4.

You know, if this had been a serie that had been produced in Europe, it would have looked much different. European TV viewers has a slightly different taste and are not as judgemental as the viewers in the US. Charmed has a HUGE success in Europe and menny countries dont kill off a show before "the fat lady sings", you know before the number of viewers goes real low. I bet that if Charmed had been an european show, Charmed would now enter its 10th season.
I dont know when it went downhill, but thats because of my european taste. I dont think it went down hill, from my POW it got better and better with each season.

I don't think Charmed ever became unejoyable for me to watch. I find certain episodes in every season to be boring, that's like with almost any television show. There's bound to be at least one episode every couple of seasons that you don't really want to watch again.
Mind you, I think Charmed began to stray from their "saving innocents" around season five. You can see at the beginning of "A Witch's Tail" that Piper and Phoebe are beginning to really not care about their innocents.

That's not a fair assessment, considering Piper was pathologically afraid. She was all for saving innocents in Happily ever after, Siren song, the superhero one, the gypsy one, etc, etc.

For me, S7 just felt too uneven. The Avatar plot ended too abruptly, and Zankou's appearances were too random and erratic.
S6 was intriguing because of Future Chris, Gideon, The Cleaners, and Piper's pregnancy. Plus, much like S5, S6 had tons of magic.
Charmed was always at its best when the sisters were confronting the dynamics of their relationship through the complications of magic in their lives.

I agree. I think in some ways, season eight was almost back to what it originally was. I think season seven really kind of went the furthest away from the original vision but then the producers kind of tried to bring things back for the final season. The only problem was that they had Billie to deal with which was the only thing that really messed things up.

if the series would have ended after season 3 then alot of us wouldn't be sitting here talking to each other right now.

I don't think Charmed ever became unejoyable for me to watch. I'm with you on that. I never ever disliked watching the show, and it never became so unenjoyable for me that I just couldn't watch it. (although I can not watch TNT reruns of S8) But, the show did go downhill. The episodes just were not the same, as they were in the beginning.

Afraid of what? Why weren't the writers able to maintain some kind of continuity about Piper's fears?
*In "From Fear to Eternity", she had a fear of flying.
*In "A Witch's Tail", she apparently had a fear of water, due to how Patty had died (wasn't this supposed to be Prue's fear?)
*In "Sympathy For a Demon", we are told that she has a fear of spiders.
Which is it?

Season Five. Top! Are you high or something? Season Five was the worst season. The show hit rock bottom then rose up then fell once more. Here is my order:
- Season Three - Season Four - Season Two - Season Six - Season Seven - Season One - Season Eight - Season Five
I know for certain the top two and the bottom two are right, the other four could easily be mixed about it. Sometimes I love Season One, others Season Six or Two or Seven. But Seasons Three and Four are my favourites, pretty much perfect seasons.

I agree how the heck was season 5 any good at all? It was horrible with all that fairy and mermaid etc crap. The SL's were not up to par.
Anyway this is my order.
Season 3 Season 2 Season 6 Season 1 Season 4 Season 8 Season 7 Season 5

I don't appreciate being told that "I'm high" just because I don't share your taste. I happen to like season 5 and I frankly don't think it's a sin to do so. Everyone has their opinions and mine is that season 5 was incredibly entertaining and that's why I watched this show, to be entertained. She was afraid of dying young like her mother, leaving her child to grow up without a mother like she did. Obviously this fear was not explored in the earlier seasons because Piper wasn't pregnant then. She was also afraid of something happening to her baby in Sympathy for the demon, but you chose to remember the random spyder fear, which was not her biggest one.

Nope, Season 2 will always be the rock-bottom of Charmed for me.

i think seasons 3-4 were the best ones. i think seasons 7-8 were the worst. i read a commentary here and i agree that it was tasteless when it was more about magic than it being about them sisters.. season 5 started to become stale and season 6 saved it for another season by adding chris character.. the show starting losing its touch because of less dramatic content and more magic trying to fill in the gaps.. it was better when there were less faeries and lephraucons and creatures but more human drama.. even the demons in the first 4 seasons seemed to have better dramatic value.
