Hey im new to this site, not sure exactly how it works but anyway im a major charmed fan. i have all 8 seasons and some books on it. i just love the show but i wanna know why in the 8th season on my dvd they changed the theme song from "how soon is now?" to that horrible guitar solo. And i have searched and searched but why did they get rid of prue!!!!

Only they really know. We can only speculate from what we've heard. There was a problem behind the scenes, and fighting between co-stars. They decided to get rid of her. Check out the Prue Fan Club. There is a thread about it. |

AM noted, in a recent interview, that there was tension, but as Assassin Witch notes, only the primary parties to situation really know what happened. Remember, that SD got fired off of 90210 for problems she may have helped create there. Spelling gave her another chance with Charmed. Since I don't believe a littel behind the scenes tension with AM would have been enough to fire her, in and of itself, I think we have to presume there were other complicating factors. Factors like her past with Spelling, who may have had no patience for this stuff after giving her another show to star in. Or, since they may have been renegotiating contracts, perhaps she was also asking for too big an increase. Either way, it seemed to be somewhat of a shock to her, as one of the few facts we (the fans) know is that she was fired with either a call or telegram while shooting a movie (over the summer break) with Julian McMahon (Cole) in Canada. Other stars, though not going into details, have said that the whole incident (her firing) was handled badly by the studio. Again, it seems this may have been more of the straw that broke the camel's back than just some spats behind the scenes stuff, but that's just my opinion.

PS. As for the theme song. Paramount, who released the Charmed DVDs, after hit with a lot of emails about this change, came out with a statement, sorta, via some email responses and an interview with Brad Kern (the Exec Producer), that they had to make a choice. Spend money on the extras (you'll note that Season 8 is the only DVD with a single extra on it) or pay again to retain the rights for using the song. In Paramounts mind (which is about bottom lines) they felt having both would have pushed the price of the season 8 DVD too high for the buyers (us). Meaning fewer would be sold, less money for them. So, because Brad had been bugging them for some time to add extras, he got permission (which I presume costs money to pay crews and actors) to film some for the DVD. Strangely enough though, not all the extras are on all the releases around the world. In other places, like Austrailia and in Europe, the S8 DVD contains some of the same extras (it was released outside the US first) and some different ones we didn't get. Similarly, the US release has some extras the others didn't get. Not sure why this happened either as it can't really cost them that much more to put all the extras on all the worldwide releases. They may be planning a second release or they had other reasons for which we're not sure, but must somehow relate to each region's audience and cultural background. Who knows? Perhaps Assassin Witch has some insights here.

I know less about the DVD issues than you do, but it's all... *eye roll* I just don't see how much that really makes sense, personally. How can all these other shows have theme song and extras every season? Whatever.

Assasain witch are you asking why there were no extras in other seasons?
Because i have the answer the first six seasons were brought out with paramount who (for reasons unkown) have a no extras policy. Season 7 was the first with CBS i don't know why there were no extras on that and there were in season 8.

I read on IMDB that she refused to sign a two year extension contract however it is unknown why. From reading Prue discussions around this forum; it appears to be a popular suspicion that she had issues with other cast members. As for the song I have not seen season eight DVD or otherwise. Bottom Line? Cause she wouldn't sign the Contract extention cause she didn't want to do Charmed for another 2 years. The "pink slip" was just a formality after WB gave her time, tried to sue her to sign, then just gave up. Aron,Brad Kern, Holly, and Alyssa were upset that Shannen wanted to leave, and Shannen did eventually manage to make up with Alyssa, Holly, And Aron so don't believe Hollywood gossip as Shannen and Alyssa are actually still friends and have reached an understanding about their little "personal matter". Alyssa might have thought that is was "her fault" that Shannen was abondoning the show, and she was also upset she couldn't convince Shannen to stay thinking it was of "what happened" but, no, Shannen was just wanted to move on and figured 3 Seasons was enough. Brad Kern had no qualms about still being upset with Shannen which is why she was never asked to guest star as Prue in the later episodes....to Bad cause it would have been so cool if "Death Becomes them" had included the Necromancer resurecting Prue and Piper having to blow her up  |
