Third Time’s the Charm
Part 1
A cemetery
San Francisco, Present Day
Piper Halliwell stood alone and erect in a cemetery, her eyes piercing the gravestone which had her sister’s name written across it. She wasn’t moving, and didn’t plan to anytime soon. The idea of leaving Paige six feet under and alone was unbearable, and Piper would not stand for it. Phoebe, Leo, and Darryl had all left long ago.
But Piper couldn’t leave Paige. She let her down before. Her feeble body had shut down temporarily after being thrown into a wall, but Paige stuck it out to the end, protecting both her sisters and both of her nephews from almost certain death. Piper had awoken to her sister’s bloodcurdling screams, and as her vision returned back to normal she saw Vecnor standing over Paige. Paige begged for mercy, pleaded for her life, but Vecnor, being a demon, took no sympathy for a Charmed One, and killed Paige. Piper repeated the spell to vanquish Vecnor, and he died along with Paige that day.
Piper had rushed over to Paige’s body, praying that she was not dead. Paige would not answer Piper’s cries, Leo would not answer her calls. Piper, feeling lower and less powerful than ever, fell upon her sister’s lifeless body and began to weep. She did not cry a silent cry, but a harsh one, with harsh sobs and tears that soaked Paige’s shirt. By the time Leo arrived, Piper had already lost all hope. Leo knew Piper, and he also knew by her body language that Paige was dead. He walked over to Phoebe, who was passed out, and healed her. He moved onto Piper, taking her in his arms and healing her.
Every time Piper remembered this brutal memory, her heart wept and her mind felt guilty. She had let Paige down, the same way she had let Prue down. And she had lost them to the same thing: magic.
Piper felt a hand on her shoulder, and instinctively turned to blow whatever it was to pieces. When she realized it was Leo, her hands fell to her sides, as the often did these days. She could not meet the gaze of his blue-green eyes, and turned back around.
“Piper, honey, you’ve got to come home,” Leo said calmly.
“No,” Piper said. “I’m not leaving her.”
“You can’t leave her when she’s already gone.”
He wrapped his arms around her waist. Normally Piper would have found this comforting, but at the moment it was irritating.
“Stop it, Leo, just stop it.”
“Please, come home,” Leo said again.
Once again Piper replied with a firm, “No.”
“Phoebe needs you, and besides, we need to find a way to fix this Power of Three thing.”
“Screw the Power of Three,” Piper retorted distantly, “and screw magic.”
“Piper,” Leo said, keeping his calm, “we need to go home.”
“No!” Piper yelled, angry at Leo for not understanding.
“Then please forgive me,” he said, and he wrapped his arms around her waist again. The image of the cemetery blurred out of focus and was replaced by the inside of the Manor. Piper whirled around to face Leo.
“Now why the hell did you do that?!” she roared at him.
“I had to,” Leo answered. “I didn’t want you to do something that you’ll regret later. You’re safer here.”
Piper ran upstairs. As she passed Phoebe’s room, she heard something. She poked her head through the window, and witnessed her younger sister crying. Piper laid down on the bed next to Phoebe and put her arms around her. Phoebe grabbed Piper’s hands and held on tightly. She wasn’t letting Piper slip through her fingers as easily as Paige had.

Warehouse
San Francisco, 1992
Perry Jackson ran through a warehouse, another set of feet following hers. She had lived here since her mother had been killed by a demon, and now the same demon, Dalke, was after her.
“Please leave me alone!” Perry pleaded as she threw boxes in the path, hoping to slow him down.
“I can’t do that,” Dalke replied coolly.
“I’ll do anything just don’t kill me!” Perry begged, fear quickly overcoming any ounce of bravery she had left.
“The Source will kill me if I don’t kill you,” Dalke answered, “and I’d much rather that it be you instead of me.”
“Then pretend to kill me! Lie to him!”
“Lie to the Source? If I do that, he’d do something worse than killing me.”
Perry skidded to a stop as Dalke appeared in front of her. Her heart felt like it was quickly rising into her throat and would flop out onto the floor any second now.
“Why?” Perry asked. “Why are you doing this to me?”
“You are a sister of the Charmed Ones,” Dalke answered, “and I can’t risk the chance of you possibly meeting up with your sisters ever.”
“I don’t have sisters,” Perry explained, and before she could say anything else, something jabbed into her stomach, sending pain all over her body, and then the same object which had caused the pain slid out jaggedly, but the pain remained. She fell to her knees, and then onto her stomach, a pool of blood rapidly spreading around her abdomen.
Dalke looked down at the young witch. He felt no guilt, no remorse, just satisfaction. Satisfaction at finishing a job. The girl was dead. He shimmered out, leaving Perry’s body for the workers to find Monday morning.

The Manor
San Francisco, Present Day
Piper sat across from Phoebe at the kitchen table, neither one of them saying a word, just silently sipping coffee. Piper heard the usual sound of Leo’s orbing, and the bright lights illuminated the wall opposite of her.
“Leo, whatever you have to say, I’m not in the mood,” Piper said. She didn’t have to turn around to know he was behind her.
“You really should listen to what I have to say,” Leo said. He walked to the head of the table and sat down.
“And why is that?” Phoebe asked.
“The Elders know a way to reconstitute the Power of Three,” Leo answered, excitement in his voice.
“We told you last night, Leo, that we’re done with being witches,” Piper said.
“And besides,” Phoebe chimed in, “there’s no way. It’s just me and Piper now, unless you guys have found a way to bring back the dead.”
“Bringing back the dead is impossible Phoebe,” Leo said. “You know that.”
“I know. I guess I was just hoping…”
“Even if we were interested in staying witches, which we’re not,” Piper added, “how would we reconstitute the Charmed Ones?”
“You have another sister,” Leo answered, as if he said things like this every day.
Phoebe snorted into her coffee, but Piper kept her composure. She sat her mug down. She stared at the wall across from her. She still couldn’t meet Leo’s stare.
“These long lost siblings just keep poppin’ up all over the place,” Piper replied sarcastically. She began to get up, but Phoebe stopped her.
“Piper, wait,” Phoebe said. “I think we should at least hear what Leo has to say. I mean, shouldn’t we consider everything before we make our decision?”
“I’ve made my decision,” Piper said, “and I’m done with the witchcraft shenanigan. I’ve lost two sisters, and I’ve almost lost my children and my other sister.”
Piper didn’t care what else either one of them had to say. She marched upstairs, slamming her bedroom door behind her.
“She’s just hurting, Leo,” Phoebe said, turning her attention back to Leo. “You know how Piper is.”
“Yeah, I know,” Leo replied. “I just…wish I could help her, but I can’t. And that makes me feel so helpless and useless.”
