A Buffy fanfic taking place after the series “Angel” ended.
The story:
Buffy is at a carnival in Italy with the Immortal. She is laughing and having a good time with no worries about her slaying duties. There is a band of gypsies there. They’re putting on puppet shows for children, dancing, and fortune telling, etc. The eldest gypsy, who is too old to walk, is sitting in a chair next to the fortune telling tent. When she spots Buffy, she is drawn to her. The feeling is almost magnetic. She feels as though there is something she needs to tell the young lady but she doesn’t know what it is. The gypsy forces herself to stand when suddenly, like a slap to the face; something forces Buffy to look at the old woman. She notices the frailty of the gypsy and rushes to help her. When she touches the woman’s arm to help her sit back down, Buffy is thrown into a dream like state along with the gypsy. Unknown to either of them, the gypsy is meant to be her guide through this experience.
“What was that?” Buffy asked accusingly as she looked at the now young vibrant and beautiful gypsy.
“I don't know. I feel like I should, but I don’t.” The woman replied.
Looking around, Buffy noticed that it was nighttime and that they were for some reason in a deeply wooded area. Screams came barreling at them from a distance. Being the slayer that she is, Buffy ran in the direction of the noise to see if she could help. The gypsy followed.
They came to the edge of a clearing where people were running in all directions. “What’s going on here? Who or what’re they trying to escape?” Buffy thought to herself. She readied herself for a battle when she saw Spike, Drew, Darla, and… Angel. They were feeding on and torturing a large group of gypsies. Spike ran after a woman carrying a baby, while Darla fed on a young man. Drew laughed and danced while Angel tortured an old man by making the man watch him drain every last drop of blood from a young woman who appeared to be the man’s daughter.
Not wanting to see this anymore, Buffy tried shaking herself out of this dream, but it didn’t work. So Buffy ran up to Angel to throw him off of the girl but she went right through him like she was merely a ghost. Angry and annoyed, Buffy turned to the gypsy and shouted, “I want to know what’s going on. And I want to know now.”
“I haven’t a clue young lady, but I do know that this is lesson to be learned. This is something of a dream. But whose dream I don’t know. Maybe this is for the both of us, something that could only be told when we were together. “ The woman informed Buffy.
Angel’s laughter caught Buffy’s attention. She hadn’t heard him laugh like that since he lost his soul. She looked to him and then to the young woman in his arms as her lifeless head rolled backwards. It was her face! Her skin was darker, and so was her hair, but it was her! Buffy was looking at herself. But how could this be? Was this girl a slayer or a past life of Buffy’s? And why was she seeing this? Feeling a bit dizzy, Buffy fell backwards. When she opened her eyes she was back at the carnival lying at the feet of the old and feeble woman who just stared at her with large brown eyes. The gypsy’s son ran up her asking, “Ma, you alright? Ma?” The woman didn’t respond her eyes stayed fixed upon Buffy’s face.
Buffy looks at the man but only for a moment. The Immortal helps Buffy to her feet. She looks at him and says “Thanks.” Still confused as to exactly what happened and why she looks back at the old woman who seems to be sleeping. She asks “Is she ok?”
“What did you do to her?” the son asks shooting Buffy an evil look.
“Nothing. I just tried to help her and… and I don’t know. Something weird happened.” Buffy answered. Trying to calm herself as well as the son of the old woman.
“She too old, she can’t handle the likes of you young people. I only bring her out here because she hates being inside. She loves to watch people enjoying themselves. I see now that it was a mistake.” The son snaps at Buffy. He walks around to the back of the wheelchair that the old woman is sitting in and begins to push it.
The old woman’s hand leaves her lap and grabs Buffy’s arm. Buffy and the son are startled by this action. The gypsy woman raises her head and looks at Buffy. “We are the cause my daughter. He killed you, so I cursed him.” The whispers with the last bit of strength she has.
Buffy realizing what the gypsy woman meant, she looks to the Immortal. Completely shocked, but now knowing what the vision meant. She had been, in a former life, the gypsy girl that Angelus killed. And the old gypsy woman had been her father who had cursed Angel with a soul. But why did the vision happen? And was she meant to be the redeemer of Angel? She didn’t know what to think. Then the Immortal, pulled Buffy away from the old woman waking her out of her deep thoughts. Buffy looked at the Immortal and said, “ I have to go. Sorry, but this is important.” She kissed him and walked away. The Immortal followed her.
Buffy goes to her apartment and begins to pack her things. She calls Giles to ask if he’ll keep an eye on Dawn for her. She then tells Giles that she has something important to do in L.A. but she’ll back as soon as she can. Not waiting for an answer she says, “Thanks.” And hangs up.
On the plane, Buffy calls Willow. Telling Willow the whole incident, she asks if Willow can do some research for her while she goes to talk to Angel. “Willow, I need you to find out everything you can about the man who cursed Angel and his daughter. Also, please see if you can find anything out about the old gypsy woman. And why this whole thing happened. Call me W&H tomorrow to tell me what you’ve found out.” Buffy states.
“Ok Buffy, Do want me to come to L.A. you might need my help?” Willow replies desperately worried about her friend.
“No, I’ll be fine. If I need magical -assistance- Wes will be there. I don’t like that they are working at an evil law firm, but I don’t think they’ve all gone evil on us. Something in me tells me that I can still trust Wes and Angel. Look Will, I got to go, the plane would be landing soon. Call me, ok. Bye.” Buffy tries to reassure herself as well as Willow.
“Bye.” Willow whispers after Buffy has already hung up. Willow looks to Kennedy, “I’m worried about her.”
In L.A. now, Buffy shows up at a nearly empty W&H. It seems Angel has done a lot of firing. She sees Illyria and asks her where Angel is. Illyria, sizing her up, says, “In his office.” Illyria then points to a door and walks away.
A very nervous Buffy walks to the door, takes a deep breath, and knocks on the door.
