“Oh it’s coming up to midnight!” Amara moaned. She was a CSI level 3. It was the only thing that made her happy about her job. £1,250 extra and three weeks extra vacation just to be a CSI level 3.
She was living with her mum and her grandmother for the past 16 years and had started this job only three years ago on a three year contract. Her third year was coming to an end in a couple of weeks and she felt really depressed about it. What if her bosses decided not to keep her longer? What would her mother say if she wanted to carry on working for the forensics? Her mother and grandmother were already annoyed that Amara was doing more nightshifts than morning shifts. What’s more to put on the plate was that Amara’s family had relatives round at the house from America. Amara had always loved to work in an American forensic firm and had applied to loads but had received no answer. Her sister was on her holidays from university and therefore using all her time sleeping and that annoyed the family a lot because that left mum and granny to work with the relatives. And what would the relatives say? They would say that Amara works her ass off and brings home money. And her sister is just being lazy, Amara thought.
“What’s up?” a voiced perked up. Up until now, Amara had thought that she was alone in the room.
“Oh hey Sanj. Nothing, I’m just looking at the clock and feeling my luck” Amara replied.
Sanjay was one of the relatives who had travelled from America to see Amara’s family with his mother and family.
He looked at Amara with a confused look.
“I’m just dreading to go to work.” She explained.
“Why? I thought you loved your job” Sanjay asked.
“Oh I do. It’s the nights that I hate. I haven’t had a decent night’s sleep since July. I’ve been working more nights since then. I was working nights on my birthday too” Amara said.
“Ouch!” Sanjay joked. “It’s 11.45. Can you get there in time?”<br>“Right I better go and get changed. Don’t wanna be late. Yeah I’ll get in time.” Amara said.
“Oh she’ll get there. Aunty Sweety says that she drives like a lunatic” Sanjay’s big brother spoke up.
Amara got up and made her way to her room, which was preoccupied by Sanjay’s family as they were staying there.
And where was Amara sleeping? On the couch in the living room. She wasn’t bothered because she came home at the crack of dawn everyday so all she needed was a place to sleep in, even if it had to be the couch.
She quickly had a shower and changed into a black ¾ length blouse and black trousers with black low heeled boots.
“And where do you think you’re going?” a voice perked up. Amara turned around to see who it was. Her granny was standing in the doorway.
“Erm, well, work,” Amara answered innocently.
“How long will this carry on Amara?” her gran asked.
“What carry on?” she asked
“You working through out the night. It’s not respectful for young girls to work late nights. You know that. No matter what the money.” Her gran argued.
“I’ve been telling you I was going to become this. Now just cut me some slack will ya! I work hard and bring home money. It’s not my fault that you don’t want any part of it cos you think it might have been touched by the dead who live in the morgue.” Amara argued back. “I’m getting late. I’ll see you in the morning”
With that she barged past her gran, said her goodbyes to anyone else who was listening and headed out the door. She got into her BMW three-door car that she had received as a birthday present a year ago and drove to Rochdale, where she worked.
